That sweet adversity it brings out the best in me

Detroit public school students, don’t be discourage be encourage, because the future holds greatness. Never be ashamed of where you are, or where you come from; it’s a reason why God put you there. Always know where you are and where you are going, and have a plan on how to get there. I believe you can accomplish anything that you set out to achieve, which is greatness, if you only believe.

I know a lady that is ninety years old, she never graduated from high school but she just earned her bachelor degree, when asked what does she plan to do with it? She said, “I’m going to look at it”. She said I earned this for me, and I also earned it for my grandchildren because I figure if they see that a little old lady like myself who never graduated from high school could earn a degree that there is no limit to what they can do.

I know another person who graduated from high school with a horrible GPA. So, she went on to Junior College and she earned a 4.0 and her associate degree. For years she said that she thought she was dumb and she soon found out that she wasn’t dumb at all, she just had to apply herself and now she knows that there’s no limit to what she can do. Well, from there she went to a university and earned her bachelor’s degree in one year after junior college. In one semester she had 27 credit hours and she graduated with a 3.0.

From there she went to one of the top ten universities some years later she graduated with honors. The key to my friend’s success is that she never gave up and she never gave in, after she reached one goal then she would reach a little higher. All of the adversities that came her way, she said that they were “my sweet adversities they bring out the best in me.”

She held onto her faith and she stood strong, and every time something would go wrong; as things sometimes do, she said that she never felt like a failure because she knew that there was a lesson to be learned. My friend she loves the Lord and those adversities lead her to pray that much harder and pushed her to go that, much farther.

Now you are probably wondering what happen to my friend, what did she do with all of those degrees? Well she used them to help to bring out the best  in others. Sometimes the things that we accomplish are  for  others, it’s to help others to grow. After-all, God blesses us so that we can be a blessing to others. My friend sometimes felt discourage even with all that she had achieved.

My friend one day realized that she was living her dream. You too can live your dream if you only believe.

As a good friend once said,"Be like NIKE just do it !!!!!

HI Shock Thanks, I was a product of Detroit public schools, but I didn't give up and I didn't give in. The difference is I had a very good support system, I was so blessed and sometimes we have to spread those blessings around. Alot of these kids don't know how to dream. One day I was taking my niece and a couple of her friends out, my niece was saying that when she grows up she's going to be an Engineer and her friend said "what you can't be an Engineer" then I said yes you can baby, you can be anything that you want to be. Before the little girl got out of the car she said, "I'm going to be a Doctor" They don't know their true capabilities. Some drop out during their senior year in high school, I have to work more with the teenagers not just pre-teens. You know I really didn't expect to get any responses to this blog, Thanks Shock have a great night.

My niece has one more year before she becomes that engineer.

I think that's great Springthing. I'm an ex-teacher with the DPS and I believe what you're saying. I use to tell my kids that all the time. As for statistics, I don't live by them I refer to them because we all have to live the situation, not be the situation. I feel bad for the DPS and its children. It's about to be what KK wanted in the first place, charter school. Then they don't have to respect any guidelines. That the different between charter and public school.

Well put Springthing...I too am a product of the DPS, tell your neice to keep going, she will be an engineer before she knows it.

I agree 100% gbpdetroit

Thanks DOL 1959, I'm also a product of DPS and I have several degrees. I was told numerous times that I couldn't do anything. It is always a matter of what you want to do with your life and once that is realized, no one can stop you from achieving your dreams.

Springthing this is a great post and I wish all the kids could read it and be inspired. The kids have big odds to face with school closings, no supplies and teacher layoffs but they can do it if they persevere. The DPS is another one that needs to be investigated on where all their money is going besides Connie Calloway's paycheck, Lincoln and drivers. The lottery is a joke and goes nowhere but in politicians pockets.

Good morning gbpdetroit, first, I would like to commend you for your support and for choosing to teach in Detroit Public Schools. I can only imagine the challenge for DPS teachers as well as students being apart of DPS school system.

I just heard this morning that DPS is planning to lay off 800 teachers, which in term will put more students inside of already over-crowded classrooms.

I know that it takes more then just the teacher it also takes a students desire to learn and a concern parent or guardian participation with the child and a continuous open line of communication with the childs school.

I implore all parents to take more of a proactive role with their childs education.

Hi alicefort, "learning can take place anywhere" While I like that. Alice your statement is so true, if we have the desire, opportunity and means there is no limit to what we can accomplish. Again if we just believe. We have to teach our children how to dream and that dreams do come true. That there are different ways of achieving a better quality of life. Sure College is one way, a great way, but their is also the trade schools such as, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and pipe fitting etc.

My point is that their possiblilites are endless, we can not to continue to let our situation define us. I do realize that some of these students did leave the Detroit Public Schools and went to charter schools, and GED schools. A diploma is just the beginning, it should not stop there.

Hi LittleChickie, I truly agree someone needs to be held accountable for the misappropriations of DPS funds.

If we need an overseer to make sure that the money is being handled properly, then so be it.

We need a deligent, and an intellegent school board and president whose objective is to help ensure a quality education for our students.

The school administrators needs to stop fighting amongst themselves and start fighting for our students. We really need to start thinking outside of the box and start comming up with feasible, creative ways of motivating and keeping our students in school.
