In the wake of the most recent campus shooting, ASU begins looking into disclosure of mental illness.

I know many will argue their various points of view, so here's mine:

While I was a student at ASU, I was diagnosed with a mental illness. I disclosed it to disability services and that was the end of it. Back then, it was no big deal to me and I had not seen or experienced just how ugly the mental health system was here in Maricopa County.

A few years later I was sexually assaulted in a behavioral health facility here in Maricopa County. I met another woman who was hospitalized in a different "franchise location" and she experienced the exact same thing. You could say it is an MO with multiple perps.

Because of the peer networking and peer support services, stories of the horrors MZ and I went through turned out to be far more commonplace than one could begin to imagine.

Further, in the early days of Value Options, they were implementing a "medication management model" for treatment. Here's your zombie pills, now go away. I was even forced to be a human guinea pig for Neurontin and at that time, it was only approved by the FDA for seizures.

I even had a doctor inform me that I was under court order and that if I didn't take what he prescribed, he would put me in the hospital. I was neither under court order and the pot was calling the kettle black that day. I look up all doctors that treat me and this particular man had been in treatment for both substance abuse and sexual contact with patients. He worked at and adolescent treatment facility at the time of his temporary license suspension. He treated me while working under the provision that he is not allowed to treat minors. If he was a teacher, his mugshot would be on TV and he would be in prison now.

It may just be coincidence, but I have seen the worst of the worst and can name names and cite what circumstances I happened to see some of the worst of the worst under and why they lost their licenses (either temporarily or permanently).

The horror story behind the doctor and the sexual assault would give you chills. His "practice" address was at a mailbox outlet franchise that was not affilitated with the USPS. Currently, his address is the physical address of a USPS location and not a PO Box there. Oh, and doctors can order drugs out of catalogs.

If you think that www.azmd.gov is keeping you safe, think again. I was sorely disappointed when they were BOMEX.

Finally, Alzheimers is a mental illness and listed in the current DSM. It was also first described back in about 1912. JQP didn't hear of any signs, symptoms or research until the early 1980s. Feeling any safer now??? What about the "elderly abuse" for which you can get legal representation if a loved one is hurt in a nursing home?

I have yet to see adequate protection for anyone with a diagnosis from the DSM and not just the elderly in nursing homes.

Now, about this ASU disclosure...

I have been very open and public about my experiences within the mental health system, but it is because I have seen the worst of the worst. I try to advocate so that there is better treatment.

ASU is perpetuating a great disservice and will undo all of the good that many peer support groups have done to get help for those that need it.

mhrecovery/about_me.asp
has the story of a woman with schizophrenia that started the whole recovery movement.

Research on the forward progress to eliminate stereotypes and to provide real recovery care and treatment will show that it does work.

ASU is on the brink of firing their own invisible bullet into the lives of at least 70,000 Magellan consumers in Maricopa County and I can't even begin to guess the number of people that receive services in the private sector.

I read through your story, and I agree with you that ASU is going down the wrong path with this attempt to disclose medical records. I may have different reasons than you for feeling this way, but all in all, it seems irrational to subject the whole to an invasion of privacy because of a marginal number of bad eggs.

I read earlier today that one in four people suffer from anything including but not limited to anxiety, depression, etc.

Also, studies show that someone with a mental illness is far more likely to be the victim of a crime, rather than the perpetrator.

If you are not too uncomfortable with sharing why you feel the way you do in greater detail, it may be more food for thought for the masses.

ASU has no right to look into anyones medical records. That is why there's a thing called the HIPAA Law. Unless someone gives them permission it can't be done.

instead of just looking at these school shootings on a one by one basis....everyone runs around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to figure out the bigger picture, the bigger problem....oh where oh where can we put the blame.....I dont know, just a quick guess....maybe blame the person with the gun that shot and killed everyone???

all the shooters have been male, so why not just eliminate all male students....or better yet, anyone under the age of 25....or anyone who was bullied in school or had crapy parents?? Why not? I'll tell you why not, because it sounds crazy!!!!

How many Americans took some form of anti-deppresant, anti-anxiety or anti something after 9/11??? I would think that if they passed a new law on gun ownership that elliminated all that had "used" prior...they would be closing gun shops because NO ONE could own one...not even cops or military, because Lord knows most have been prescribed something or another for post tramatic stress disorder....

why does it seem impossible to put our efforts into loving each other, forgiving each other, stop bullying each other, start loving our kids, paying attention to our kids....why cant we just try to do things better BEFORE people lose it?? We dont want to find out whats causing anything anymore, we are all about elliminating things left and right....

my thought is, elliminating hasnt solved our problems in the past....so why keep going down the same dam road???

The world should be full of cute puppies and rainbows. Not gonna happen. It is all on the parents plain and simple. KNOW YOUR KIDS AND THEIR FRIENDS!!! Raise your kids to know right from wrong. It amazes me how everyone tries to blame TV, video games and society. Littlefoot does bring up a good point though. Most people have lost a step since 9/11. They have been in a small daze ever since the attack. Get over it, wake the hell up and look around you, but never forget. Don't let the Bush Administration or for that matter anyone scare you into thinking about terrorists every day of your life. There were terrorists before 9/11 and there will be terrorists around forever. You can't irraticate nut cases now can you? Just go about your lives and teach your children what's best for them.

Littlefoot and RD are saying much of what I had in mind. There is a root problem and it's not kids with guns. Better families, good parenting will make most of this stuff go away. That sounds trite but it's not, rather a big ole huge chunk of the problem. Every time something bad happens, are we supposed to relinquish one of our rights? Soon we will have no rights at all. Decision-makers don't have common sense. I don't know who they are listening to, but it's not the voice of sanity.

Beyond that, I think a return of moral absolutes will produce better adults. Did you know that some mental disorders can be traced to the quality of the diet and nutrition? Parents are a big factor in producing better adults, but it takes sacrifice and too many don't make those sacrifices.

I have heard that phxjane....good point, I wonder if Mcdonalds or Sonic gives a rip what they sell?? Probably not :)

you know, there will always be people who give birth and forget they did after awhile..and if thats the case and the kid ends up in a group home, they should treat them much much better than they do...and if they end up in a foster home, then those parents need to love them dearly...how many news stories have you heard of group home abuse or foster home abuse....not only should the direct parents love and pay more attention to their kids, but so should the places we send our kids too....like school, church, foster homes, etc.....even those places have become crazy....or at home with your kids, try and lead by example....if parents are knocking on people on tv cuz they have a bad hair cut or dress funny, that only teaches their kids (that they love/pay attention to) to run out and go to school and tease other kids, cuz guess what, they learned it from home!!! If someone looks or acts different then the norm pick on them??? its sad, truly sad....

a quote I have written down and taped to my work moniter is from Gandhi.....

"YOU must be the change you want to see in the world"

PRICELESS~
