If you follow what happened in Canada and California after they started the no smoking ban, you will find out that business for bars, restaurants, and the casino has dropped to nothing , bars at night are like ghost towns, more and more business's have been sold or have gone out of business. unemployement has dropped to a record high. I think Michigan is in enough trouble now , if they pass the no smoking ban things will be worst. getting a job in Canada is almost impossible. Do we want more of that here, in Michigan? I feel for the non smoker, but is it really worth a no smoking ban . I say NO, what do you think ?

those that are unemployed probably can't afford to smoke anyhow...

Smoking SHOULD be banned in all restaurants. Step outside if you want a smoke...I am an ex smoker of 18 years and I hate coming home smelling of smoke after having gone out to eat, or to the casino.

If you hate smelling like smoke, quit going there! There are plenty of non smoking restaurants to choose from. Why should I go outside in the freezing cold when you could go to another place that is smoke free? If it gets passed, you will see Michigans economy get worse. They will have to raise taxes in other areas to make up for the millions lost in cig tax. But hey, at least you wont smell like smoke!

This is so not true. Show me factual data that proves this in statistical fact.

In fact my wife and I can't wait for the smoking ban to go into effect so we can frequent some of our favorite places more.

Below you will find a plethora of FACTUAL websites that prove the initial comment in this blog is completely false.

In fact in addition to those above there are over 10,000 other studies that show more than 90% of areas with public smoking bans have seen increased business. In addition, the only person with a sound economic article (economist David Henderson) about the smoking ban being bad for business, was discredited for failure to take into account such things as the cost of air filters needing to be changed less in bars, health care costs for second hand smoke, life of those forever bar patrons that don't smoke, the change in frequency of a male individual that can no longer visit the bar by himself after getting married, and most importantly the increase in young bar goers that do not smoke that were not surveyed and could not be physically counted as they don't currently go to the bar due to the smoke.

His article used simple math to take into account bar patrons, but not current non bar patrons. Because his data all came from bars currently th

Oh, but it so is true. What your sites fail to mention is 1) they are studies done by NON-smoking groups. 2) these studies are biased because they leave out those businesses most effected by the ban (bowling alleys, bingo parlors, pool halls, etc) 3) Your articles fail to mention economic scale and location of these businesses, many that would not be effected either way, due to the clientle they service. The lower scale bar/restaurant thrives mostly on drinks and desserts. The longer the customer stays, the more they drink and eat. Smokers, rarely stay past the first beverage and rarely order dessert, cutting the profits of the establishment by 50%. To an upscale place, that can be made up in a meal, but is devistating to a smaller, lower scale business.

BTW, in referring to smokers, I mean those in non-smoking bars and/or restaurants.

So what you are saying is the low scale dive bars everybody hates, go out of business. Sounds good to me!

NorthofDetroitGuy - If everyone hated them, they would already be out of business. Way to not see the point here!
If a non-smoker is so concerned about their health, they why would they even goto a place that allows it. There are and becoming more business that are smoke free. If it's so great for business, then they will all become smoke free anyway. Why don't you open a bar or casino and make it smoke free next door to the smoking one and see who gets more business. Let the customer base speak for itself!

i am a non smoker and have been all my life. i have friends who smoke and i dont mind occaisionally being around it. i dont believe that there should be a ban on smoking everywhere however i do think it would be ok to ban smoking in restaurants only and public indoor places where children are constantly

I agree - this is a bad idea jerryb, in fact I've created a petition saying so! Sign it, let's tell our congressmen & women how we really feel!

Ah-HAH! The real motivation behind the smoking ban:

Ban smoking...people will live longer...people will pay taxes to the government longer!

They should be forced to make a smoking section that still offers drinks and such...

What NorthofDetroitGuy is also forgetting to mention, is that most of his links, are stories coming out of the United Kingdom, and ONE is even from 1999! So, if there WASN'T a lack of business, there probably IS now, since this is years later, and the bans have probably taken their toll by now.

Give me a break could you make this country anymore of a stricter place we no longer have freedoms. As a child 99% of us were raised around smoke at parties, malls, movies etc..... Now all of sudden lets ban smoking and take away someones right. I don't see us banning the beer commericals on tv and that promotes drinking and then people usually drive which could kill someone. I don't see us banning drinking in public places. Why not hurt michigans economy even more by banning smoking like the Governor hasn't hurt us enough.

Guess folks will not be happy until smoking is made illegal. Seems to me that was tried before only with liquor. That turned out real well

I think NON-SMOKERS should deal with it or not go to the business places that do have smokers. It's us smokers that are spending money to buy the ciggs and the money for the insurance so if you ban smoking then we will be worse off then we already are, This is America. my question is if we ban smoking in public then shouldn't they close strip clubs because strippers may cause cheating on spouse, going broke, becoming a stalker, getting a STD? it seems like we have double standards. before i get emails i am not hating on any career, i was using as an example
