It is a shame what happened about the copper from the fountain on Belle-Isle.  Something should seriously be done about this situation.  If the buyers of copper are regulated properly, then scrap metals (copper) would then be regulated also.  Copper thieves ruining the reputation of the city in which I take pride in.  If the "would be" copper scavengers have no where to sell their loads, they probably wouldn't be so quick to rip-off our ever so strugling community .  The reason that I had to get involved is the simple fact that my precious wedding was held at this very fountain 4 years ago.  Not only that this is about Belle-Isle, but the city of Detroit as a whole.  Scrap metal vandalism is a major problem and is effecting everiything down to abandoned and empty homes all over the country.  In closing, if there isn't a "Black Market", there probably would be less crime....

Don't forget about the suburb folk who venture thru the gates of hell for their good ole' crack. Oh and the ones who buy the copper because the city is dead. Keeping on helping the situation the way you do and it will flow out eventually.

Hhhmmmm. I question what you were doing on Van BLEEP or Mound in Detroit? There's no businesses there. Wait a minute.... Could it be to score some good ole' crack from one of those black people all dressed up with no where to go? Or to pick-up one of those ugly hookers while talking on the phone to your ugly wife and noticed the police didn't stop you?

i dont understand why people are always so closed minded... but yet at the same time people just loved the negativities that are around... yes, some parts of detroit are ghetto looking and there are some bad people there... but that does not mean that it's a crap hole... why not think of the good in things??? and how come when the word "DETROIT" gets sopken, people automatically think about all the black folks that live there and the abandoned house/ buildings to the drugs on the street??? why not ever once think about something good??? LOOK AT IT THIS WAY FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO THINKS DETROIT IS A CRAP HOLE... if you feel and think that so much, why don't you go live in a third world country??? when you walk outside and all you see are bugs and flies buzzing around, dried up dirt everywhere, and your house is made from sticks and leaves... you tell me which world/ city you would rather live in then!!!!!

people sure are greedy, guess that copper will buy someone some crack. hope you enjoy your brief encounter with the pipe, you just screwed up many many years of people's memories with that statue. Anything else you like, seems like Detroit is a free-for-all all the way from the top KK to the lowly crack smoker hmmmmm sounds familiar. Rope Detroit off nah just encase it in cement then let KK continue on his path of destruction

Did you say go live in a third world county? If you take a good long look at this country you will start to see a third wold country. Our rights are being taking away at an alarming rate, the government people need to start running the country and stay out of our personnel lives. As far as Detroit goes, it is a good city, it just needs a few cans of paint. If the neighborhoods looks good, the bad guys will go else where. Instead of passing out cheese, pass out a few gallons of paint. I live in the suburbs but stll like Detroit.

Thank You Uncducks! I've been a Detroiter all my life and I appreciate you defending my city.
I hate it that Detroit has such a negative image of Detroit and I know the council and the mayor hasn't made it any better. And just as you've said all this city needs is a few cans of paint and some elbow grease, and that can come in the form of people with true integrity that are willing to work hard.

Speedbuggy49 If you live in the suburbs you should come into the city and see the wonderful things that are going on here in Detroit. And black people are not the only people that live in this city. Our city is ethically diverse and we're all friendly (with the exception of a few foolish nuts but that's everywhere)However if your prejudice to any race of people just stay away from us because that has been image that we have been trying desperately to get away from for years.

jand472, Thank you for your story on our city fountain. and your right if they find the black marketer's they really would solve this copper theft problem. But for those of us who live in the city we all know that Belle Isle is alway's police patroled and for someone to steal copper form the fountain and actually get away with it in tow is inconceivable.

I was so hurt and disappointed when I found out that the fountain had been stripped. But I was advised not to take it personally, thieves will take advantage whenever the opportunity arises. The police has a regular route on the isle so you have to wonder how the opportunity was open. Crime is everywhere, drugs too. Its not just in Detroit. Detroit has many jewels, if you just take a look. You don't have to take a hard look either. I hope the City can find a way to replace the copper with something less inviting to thieves.
