Definition of Liberal and Conservative

My daughter once asked me what the difference between and Liberal and a Conservative, I thought for a moment and replied:

A Liberal is a person that is for abortion and against the death penalty.

A Conservative is a person that is against abortion and for the death penalty.

I think today would be;
If you make under 100K a year and not a liberal, there is something wrong with you. If you make over 100K a year and not a conservative there is something wrong with you.
...you will have to adjust for inflation though.
