It is all about perception as long as the earth floats in space.  My precious jewels and treasures may be garbage to you.  But, it still doesn't mean it is not important to me.  I live in a community that doesn't have top notch retail stores.  The mom and pop outlets are the way of life.  Most of the time the owners of these outlets don't look like me.  That is not a concern to me because I appreciate diversity.  My only hope is that respect prevails while dealing with me, no matter what you think of me.  It is not a problem that we disagree, the problem is when people tend to alienate those that they disagree and try to influence others to do the same.
