Dear Mr. Mayor PLEASE READ THIS. Some free advice about the media.

Dear Citizens, decide for yourselves what's right or what's wrong.

"Rumors sell papers," Cox said. "My attorneys who walk in the
courtroom ... need witnesses and solid evidence. That's a big
difference."

That's what Attorney General Mike Cox says about recent claims concerning a rumored 2002 party with strippers at Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's official residence.

Cox's statement brings up an interesting point. What is the media's role in this situation? We can report the news and attribute the information to what a witness claims. In a court of law, a judge and a set of rules determines what's admissible. A good journalist always attempts to get eye-witness accounts of events, and a good journalist always attributes the information to the source, be it a witness, official or otherwise. The problem is, if the witness is lying, the damage done by the report may already be done.

It's important for a viewer or reader to pick on the attribution of a story before they make judgments, just as it is important for television stations and publications to make judgments on the sources before they publish or broadcast a story. "Considering the source" is vital.

In a court of law, witness testimony is only allowed if it's relevant to the trial, and it is also refuted by opposing attorney's. If the witness is lying they can be charged with perjury. That's important to understand.

But what's right is not always what's legal. It's not illegal to NOT help an old lady to cross the street, but it's probably the right thing to do. It's not illegal to witness a crime and say or do nothing about it, but it's the right thing to do. It may be not illegal to cheat on your wife, but it's not the right thing to do. Indeed even what's right and what's wrong can be debated, but there are certain standards most people adhere to.

In the end, there may be no formal charges filed against the mayor, or if there are, he may be acquitted of all of them. This does not necessarily mean that the mayor did nothing wrong, it's just that he did nothing illegal. The people will decide how he performed and express themselves best in the voting booth a year from fall.

The mayor blames the media for it's lynch mob mentality. Maybe that's true. But you make it easy to write headlines with your actions. How do you deal with this Mr. Mayor. I offer this free advice on how to deal with the media :

  • Get back to the business of the city. It's too bad that you ended your speech with a personal tirade. You had a great speech going, and could have changed the headlines. They may have looked like this: KILPATRICK FOCUSES ON MOVING CITY FORWARD, IGNORES GROWING CONTROVERSY. Indeed what you laid out in your speech was all about the business of the city, until the end, then it became about the your business. Take the tirade out of your speech and I for one would have written "Mayor takes high road".
  • Asking the media to leave you alone will not work. Fair or not, you just threw gasoline on the fire. Whoever is advising you should be fired, for either giving you bad advice or not being strong enough to stop you from hurting yourself. Call me if you want some real media advice, I am happy to offer it as I would like to see the business of the city become the headline. This will not happen until this controversy is addressed.
  • The media should be debating the pros and cons of the 300-million dollar bond plan (by the way we are), not the party. Want to help the media to do that, then only talk about specific issues of the city OR answer all controversy questions once and for all and be done with it.
  • Keep your appointments. You told our Fox 2 reporter on the air that you would come to our station and read through documents and explain in detail what they mean. You never showed up. Want to try again? We're ready when you are.
  • Know that the media will continue to investigate all that you do. You are the mayor, you are in the public limelight, you are elected by the people. Understand it. Work with the media, set meetings with all the outlets. If you have nothing to hide, then appear on the shows, address the issues and move on. The you can say "asked and answered" and focus on more important matters of the people.
  • Recognize that ratings are likely up for all local media because of this controversy. Believe it or not, you can still effect the headlines - -deal with the day's controversy, address them one at a time -- and keep promoting the agenda you laid out during your state of the city speech.
  • Face the music without anger. It serves no one in the end. If you are innocent, act like it. Call my mother a BLEEP and I cold care less because it could not be further from the truth. It's ridiculous and I can't get angry. I would think you're a fool. Don't get me wrong, I love my mother, and if you tried to harm her in a real way I would defend her. I understand how you feel about your family, but lashing out encourages the morons that would threaten them. Attention and reaction is what they want. Don't give in to that. Confront the issues one at time without anger. Give nothing away.

FINALLY THIS PERSONAL NOTE: Rely on the truth if it is your ally. If it's not, the time has come to move on. If your goal is to help the people of Detroit, then search your heart and recognize that there may be a time to step down so that the citizen's issues can once again rise above your personal traumas. Maybe you can serve the city better as a private citizen and businessman. Your legacy is in your hands. You control your own destiny. Not GOD, not the media, no one but you. God may grant you the strength and talents to do this, but it is your choice to make. You choose the path to take. Blame no one, JUST DO.

Dennis,

Wow, that is one great piece.

I think the fact that he has not moved on shows the truth is not his ally.

Legal proof aside, his conscience should convict him. He knows he had an affair and agreed with Beatty about firing officers, and that his testimony contradicts that.

Very good letter & post; Kilpatrick's arrogance and defiance will make him go out like a common thug ionstead of stepping up like any REAL man would and take responsibility for his actions. If he wants to serve his supporters and the city taxpayers best, moving aside so the city can get past this scandal would be the best way.

Kwame reminds me of the old cartoons we had as kids where an ostrich stuffs it's head in the sand. He's hard to figure out, either his vanity won't allow him to believe that he's actually done anything wrong or he's just hoping it will go away. Humans for all we have become are still animals. We still have basal instincts and any animal that senses weakness on the part of an adversary will attack. Kilpatrick's speech showed his true nature, he's a wounded animal beginning to show fear. I was honestly surprised when he returned from Florida, I didn't think he would. Too bad he didn't do this city a favor and STAY there!

The true depth of his stupidity has surfaced. He's damaged himself and numerous others. Cost the city Millions and continues to cost the city in cash, and drives home the fact that Detroit is one terrible place and confirms it across the country. As SuperDelegate to Obama his nonsense will be another nail in his coffin, he's sent back his race 20 years, relations with the suburbanites that have funded the city and his mayhem 50 years, and he's being supported while he's doing it.Whites are tired of hearing the black Racist claims constantly,as he and al, jesse, louis, obama's preacher make themselves easily disliked.

Well said! The mayor does not know right from wrong, only what can be proven illegal. This should be broadcast more than once on television.

Also Note: Kilpatrik as A state Rep missed 360 votes on legislation and bills in a one year period from January 2001 to January 2002-Even then he was also a failure and too young to hold such an important political job. See my post>

Your aritcle is great but instead of the two options I suggest three options that he may have. Maybe he could better serve the city as a private citizen (No), businessman (No)or prisoner of the State (Yes).

It completely eludes me why "The Feds" don't just come into this city and literally clean house i.e. summarily dismiss Kwame and his minions.Perhaps someone out there can enlighten me on this !

BTW "car7858"I just had the unfortunate experience of stumbling unto your blog page. From the very slanted views you express about Obama, one would assume that you are a "Shrillary" supporter.I have no allegiance either way to these two nominees but would suggest that you attempt to be a little more unbiased in your opinions.

Morning all, You mention lying in a court of law is purgery, kwame know's that word. confused, he has no conscience or he would'nt keep screwing taxpayer's over and over. car, again I agree kwame is a arrogant smug common thug but you and I know he won't step aside, the lifestyle is lavish and he likes the power. Rev, AMAN you said it and because you did and I agree we will be labeled racist. idk, The smug thug know's right from wrong but think's he can do anything he want's and [probly] get away with it.paterson, love that third option, maybe then he won't be so smug. Again I say wife, mommy kwame, bully and all his "posse" should also be investigated for any part of any mis use of taxpayers money or cover-ups from the beginning of his reign because they have all benifited in one way or another. It's time to clean house and make people accountable. Lastly let kwame pay for his own defence, he has cost the city enough.

In the end I hope formal charges are levied against the, and I use the term loosely, Mayor. It is obvious to the most casual observer this man is a low life and he has no regard for anyone but himself. That is proven my what he is putting his wife and kids through. I am hoping that he has huge fines levied as well as a prison term. Wouldn't it be nice for the city to get back a few million dollars that this Mayor has cost the city.

It appears that this mayor has become a god unto himself. Who does he represent?

BTW gentleforce-Actually, I swing towards McCain as the Democratic "forerunners" are too busy slamming each other. Welcome to Freedom of Speech in the blogs! I tend to have unfortunate instances too where I run across self-control freaks in here that think the world is theirs to command. I would strongly suggest if you don't like my views & opinions, kindly skip on by and stick with your own program.

Was the Mayor "biased" when he slammed "outsider" and the burbs? What about the mentality of his supporters that only see one color and have one-sided views of other cultures? Is it allright for Obama's minister to refer to whites as "devils" and trash? I don't think so.

Your thoughts are beautifully expressed with pertinent ideas concerning Mayor K. At the end of your piece you mentioned the truth and it's effects. This is one of the main issues regarding Mayor K. which is the facto of him and his recent office workers building a towering "Babel" of scandalous lies. As Mayor of Detroit the citizens have the right to know the truth and respect it's leader not always wondering or surmising what happened when? What's going to happen next? A stable, respected leader is deserving of Detroit citizens not the incumbent and his current practices.

I wonder who was responsible for the enormous number of staff cuts in Detroit's Finance Department. Could it be that we are in this Audit mess, costing Detroit taxpayers millions of dollars (and increasing all the time), because the Mayor (LOL) got rid of competent Detroit employees and then hired his friends and family? (This would explain why he had so many "supporters" at his supposed State of the City speech.) Or, could it be because even more of Detroit's money has gone into his pocket than we can even begin to imagine? Certainly the $9 million cover-up money that we know of for sure could have bought Detroit some really great finance people.

i don't need kim worthy to tell me i have been lied to. i don't need religious and business leaders to tell me needs to go. the mayor has disgraced this city and all of it's citizens. Even if he is not charged with a crime. he has violated his oath of office and he needs to resign. if he were in the private sector, he would have been fire along time ago.
