My 6th grader has to do a Rube Goldberg project, its a complex machine to do a simple task....

http://www.rube-goldberg.com/

thing is I need some ideas, so far we are thinking about a machine to ring a bell, I saved paper towel rolls and Im hitting the hardware store to gather some stuff. I think its a way too hard thing for a 6th grader.. but hey some 6 graders do way more complicated things !

Any ideas at all are GREATLY appreciated !

(I'll even bake you guys some cupcakes, if we ever get our get together going,,see how desperate i am !! )

Michelle

Oh I love stuff like that! Maybe get some marbles to spill down a track, to create an impact to knock down a line of dominoes, so the last domino hits a little see-saw that tips a nerf ball into a little basketball hoop? Easier said than done, I know... but how cool would that be?

Hi Michelle, Thanks for the link. I do very well with the Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader questions even tho 5 grade was 1/2 century ago. I was proud that I have kept learning!

Then, your blog ... had no idea what Rube Goldberg was, therefore, assuming I was not as smart as a 6th grader. Thanks to the link, I feel better.

I don't recall a label on the idea but would the domino snake thing qualify as a Goldberg - they are set up that when the last one hits the next they all fall down.

Have a wonder-filled day, Aili

Michelle -- I would suggest that you consult with the teacher who assigned this project to get some feedback on the amount of parential participation he/she would allow.

If you do a lot of work on this project, will you be running the risk of having your child be accused of cheating?

Ahh Uncle.. good point! I have a bad habit of helping way too much ! It is hard for me to step back sometimes, this time she did need some ideas, I thought some input from you guys many help! And it has. So far the teacher said it didnt have to be all that complex, and they didnt expect the kids to be working with wood and metal.. too dangerous. So far she saved a TON of paper towel rolls (empty)she taped up some in a way that it looks kinda like a water park ride..lol. I gave her a giant plastic container to stand it up in, so it wont fly away when she brings it in this friday. Hardest thing was finding a BIG marble :)

Michelle -- I understand the feeling -- you always want to help your kids succeed. I have no doubt that almost all the kids are receiving help from their parents -- the trick is knowing when to stop.

Also, I have to admit, assigning a RG competition to a bunch of 6th graders seems a little too ambitious. High schools and colleges usually do this sort of thing.

Big marble LOL. Are you aware that the Earth is sometimes referred to as "The Big Blue Marble"?

Looking forward to it. I'm a big fan of ingenuity and cleverness.

I'm shocked that these competitions aren't being shown on TLC or the Discovery Channel. I guess the action is difficult to shoot?

Its funny how NYC public schools are mostly on TV just when things go wrong! Hardly you see stories where good things happen, when kids are working hard on things.

Cityslicker, maybe you should start a TV show,
Great Projects by a 6th grader, maybe it will a
tv audience like the show Are you smarter then a 5th grader? Maybe, you can get some ideas
