With the internet, it seems more and more there is nowhere to hide. Hide? Ok I mean more of, live a private life.

Countless sights have opened up all over the internet. Ones you can post up license plate #'s, warn people about cheaters, even ones where less than civil servants are shown for all the internet to see.

This made me think.

I for one try to live privately. I have not much to "hide" my life really isnt all that interesting , but I do hold my location, my day to day, and most important my childrens identity very far from the internets view. But so often I see sights where one can put up very private information about almost anyone they chose.

It made me think, am I the only one who has ever been curious to what is out "there" on the net about ourselves? Do we think about how others in the internet world percieves us? Do people purposly have internet identitys, ones where they can live their "internet lives" without worry of persecution?

Ha... that last line made me laugh.

Do you search the net for yourself?

I googled myself once. I got like 20 names all around the US that were similar. ( none were me.. that means I dont exsist?

:)

It's so true. There is even a site that tattle tales about peoples ages! When Rosanna & Ernie joked about who is older, I put there names in this site and their ages appeared. I'll never tell though :)

Honestly, this shouldn't be allowed. What gives them the right to profit off of our personal information? Without our permission on top of that!! Name, state and age is free, but for only $9.95 they will give you Ernie or Rosanna's (for example) home address too! They they can go to Mapquest with that and even get directions! This is some scary stuff!

These sites need to be stopped! I blogged about this a few months ago under the heading "A Stalker's Paradise". But unfortunately, as always; nothing will be done until a stalker using one of these sites does something to hurt someone. I hope not though.

asnapper, if thats the case I have tons I didnt know about too ! lol.

I didnt know about the age site !! Thats exactly what I mean!! There should be a law about only authorized persons being able to access your information, yet I bet the ACLU would have some fun trying to get that into play...

Yesterday I found out that a childhood friend of mines died in another state, My sister ran into her brother at a street fair, I havent talked to her in the last 6 yrs. When I did a search on her, I came up with nothing. The one time I wish I could find something, and then I cant.

I just contacted www.intellius.com and www.ussearch.com to have my info removed, and I will go to peoplefinders.com next to get removed.......I wonder how many more sites there are.
As long as they are allowed to do this, people should NEVER give out there last name online.

As there are over 500 individuals with my same first and last name, I am unworried as to anybody knowing it. The worst piece of information to give out is your social security number as this can be used to purchase thing like cell phones and the like with no proof of identity other than a birth date. This situation exists because our elected officials do not care about one of the worst problems in our day; identity theft. Ironically, almost everything you apply for asks for your social security number. This needs to change!

Good point Daniel.....always refuse to give your SS# over the phone. I was asked for it last week over the phone and I started to give it to them, then I caught myself and said NO, you cannot have my SS#.

Intellius makes you fax your drivers license to get removed (blacking out the DL# and photo). ussearch.com lets you email them to get removed. Peoplefinders.com says you have to use post office mail to send them your request to be removed.....and they say they will remove you from "most" searches. Most?

And if you have a common last name, you wouldn't want to be mistaken for the wrong person being searched (such as Sarah Connor in The Terminator) Ewww.

500 names? ! goodness ! I thought my 20 was bad ! Hey at least if someone tried to search you, they would get caught up in so many other people, I bet by # 25 they would just give up ! lol

jmax123,

Fax your license? Thats crazy, it makes no sense for you to send out MORE personal information in order to remove personal information !

What make me think about this subject was web sites like dontdatehimgirl.com, and ones like it. I felt it not fair that information is posted about people, even #'s and they get away with it. Sure you can make an account and try to defend yourself, and what good would that do when the damage has already been done?! I was amazed on how easy it was to get info about anyone with just a measly 9.95. I dont get why there are laws that the government can have access to our information, yet there arent any laws forbidding anyone else.

I have to admit I have googled myself and even blogged about it. It was a vain move on my part. However I did delete or adjust some information on the internet after I saw the type of information about me displayed online.
Now I just live by: anything I do will be public knowledge.
