I want to begin this post by declaring my love for the City of Detroit! Much like a parent, dealing with a troubled child..it is time for Detroit to get a dose of Tough Love!! The people who remain in Detroit will tell you in a minute that they love Detroit unconditionally! I love Detroit too, but I'm afraid to say that my love does have "conditions".

Condition 1: Safety

We all hear the numbers...Those ever-climbing crime rates that Detroiters suffer through. The numbers that have crowned us 'Murder city" time and time again throughout the years! As much as I want to jump on the bandwagon of those who say that the perception of Crime in Detroit is exaggerated by the media...I just can't. Only those who have thus far escaped the grips of Detroit crime can exclaim that the perception is just that and not a reality! If you or a loved one have ever come face to face with a violent crime, you know it changes your life forever. My cousin, Charles Phipps, was a Detroit police officer who was shot and killed while off duty by a band of criminals, because he was in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time! He died the day after his wife gave birth to their son. I love Detroit, but safety is a condition of my love. When your children can't play outside for fear of gunshots or it takes hours for the police to respond to a crime...I love Detroit, but Detroit needs to love me back by keeping me and my family safe!

Condition 2: Education

There is a growing problem in suburban schools....infiltrators! Children whose parents have enrolled them in "better" schools despite not living within the "legal" boundaries of that school district. Most of these children live in Detroit and their parents have found that they are not being properly educated in Detroit public schools, or the presence of violence has made the school no longer safe for their children to attend. Detroit children are dropping out of school at record rates and that just spirals into adults who have no opportunities, thus becoming a drain on society. Detroit schools have been floundering for decades! If my child can't be educated simply because I choose to live in Detroit..then it's not worth it. I love Detroit, but Detroit needs to love me back and implement changes that assure our children receive a quality education.

Condition 3: Diversity

Yes! I said it!! That big 8 mile border and the mentality that it stands for has done more harm than good for the residents of Detroit! Detroiters are separated from the rest of Michigan and somehow that needs to be addressed! To me, there is nothing more beautiful than diversity. For me..a diverse neighborhood is one that welcomes all colors from all walks of life, respectable people, living together. Believe it or not...there are places like this in existence  ...in America! Diversity is a hard sell when the very people that you need to come live in the city to make it diverse....are too scared to put down roots there because of the crime and lack of quality education...see how one thing effects the other? and round and round we go.....

Perhaps my "conditions" are a tall order for Detroit, but I say that the "If you build it they will come' prescription that so many think will heal Detroit isn't enough. We can build up Downtown, we can move new innovative businesses into Detroit's core...but if the surrounding neighborhoods are allowed to continually decline, it will do nothing for the quality of life for the RESIDENTS of Detroit. I am all for making Detroit a pleasurable experience for visitors, I understand that in politics..perception IS reality! There are many Detroit gems that we can tout, we have all heard of them..from Motown, to The big 3, to the Fox theatre and so on...However, these gems have been muddied by the on-going mayoral scandal as well as our ineffectiveness to deal with Major issues in the city. I know there are many who say that they will "never' leave Detroit.

There are many who will admonish me for suggesting that we "run" instead of staying and fighting. To those who say "Roll up your sleeves and fight for the city that you proclaim to love"...I say this: I have yet to find sufficient reason to risk my life and the lives and education of the children I love for the sake of Detroit! (Now them there is fighting words)!

Ode to Detroit:

 I love you

you treated me well growing up

  I remember your beauty

until your scars began showing up

 I love you

I remember your tree lined streets

 when neighbors were neighborly

 and would actually speak

  I love you

that is no mystery

your streets hold the memories of my family

throughout history

 I love you

 Detroit

My shining star

 I'll always love you

Detroit

but for now

it's from afar

Interesting post CB....Big surprizes in store for everyone who are not looking into the near future. All of the Federal Depts, and financial publications have Detroit on the decline. Residents at 680,000 to 750,000 in 5 years or less, rise in crime, etc.Total loss of tax base. The State and Fed's total refusal to continue to support the city. The whole world is watching.Social experiment gone awry....

I love that Shock (artwork can be admired from afar). Reverendcirca53, those are some sad statistics...makes you wonder, what if anything can be done to change things around?

As usual you've written a thought provoking post. Although artwork can be relished from afar, I want to see the leadership arise that will again allow us detroiters embrace the city of our youth. It can happen, I have to believe that the Kilpatrick's and the filth he represents are like a thick coat of bad paint. Enough scraping and solvent and a new, and beautifully old face can reappear.

Very insightful post. I would also love to see the city of my youth arise. Being realistic however without the movers and shakers getting off of their casino/entertainment kick it may never happen. But we`ll be highly entertained and amused in the ashes of KK`s fires..........

I'm not a sociologist (someone who studies social problems), but I think you bring up some valid points, CityBlues. Why are safety, education and diversity being so adversely affected? My guess is illicit drugs (crack), lack of personal responsibility and people seeking a thrill (perpetrators of crime) in illegal ways. All three are as interdependent as the safey, education and diversity solutions you mention.

A very intelligent and insightful post, CityBlues.

Detroit's downfall will continue until the people wake up and realize that to get better everyone has to get involved. It's must be made ok to tell the police about crimes you've seen. The true change starts within.

City Blues this is a very good and honest post. Until we get an administration that is for Detroit and not just for themselves Detroit was continue to lag behind. We need leadership that is sincere and effective regardless of their COLOR! Good leadership comes in all colors we need to get out of this ignorant mentality that we must vote black. I support anyone that can improve the quality of life and the standard of living in Detroit. Furthermore, I support charter schools in Detroit, I support anything that will give my child a better opportunity in life and a fighting chance at a good life. We have to stop allowing Detroit's selfish self serving school officals deciding what is right for our children we have to take more of a pro-active role; with our public school system and with our city government. Although must statics don't show the graduation rate for the Detroit charter schools or private schools, which Detroit does have quite a few charter schools. The statics also doesn't tell the night schools graduation rate; Detroit public schools has lost alot of children to Detroit Charter schools also. I have paid over $24,000 in a six year period just for my daughter to attend private school in Detroit, this is money that could had went towards her college education this is another reason why we must try something differnt, anything would be better then what we have now.

I just don`t get that "don`t snitch" street mentality. Pretty sad day when gangsters and thugs can print off T-shirts promoting their campaign of terror and intimidation. They make it appear cool and the sheeple who fall for it are actually proud they are being terrorized and intimidated.

Your post popped up while I was writing mine spring and I just read it.

"Detroit's selfish self serving school officals"

How true. They hire a superintendent who has nothing but negative reviews from her past positions. And one of her first great idea here is to keep high schools open that should be closed for severe lack of enrollment and high drop out rates. Her plan? Just allow each school to keep a small population ( 450 or so ) and disguise them as supposedly cutting edge specialty schools........LOL She`s getting paid big time to drain the education budget even more with band aid solutions and disguise the rampant incompetence. Oh, but it`ll "look" good! lol

I live in the suburbs and many Detroiter`s are sending their kids here. Most suburbs have open enrollement now and accept out of district students because of their own enrollment problems. The thing with that is.......kids attend and then the parents begin to like the area and perks and then they move out of Detroit for better opportunities for themselves and their kids. Who can blame them when Detroit has a yahoo schools superintendent with nothing of substance to offer them?

The suburban schools aren`t perfect and do have their own problems, but some are finding they have to re-educate some of the Detroit students that come in. Because of a lot of the stuff Detroit schools allow kids to get away with or don`t have a handle on they have to be taught some behaviors are not acceptable here. Yeah, it`s that bad.

springthing, you bring up some excellent points, for far too long Detroit has been the personal bank account for corrupt politicians and school officials. I recently heard an interview with Monica CONyers, where she was touting The Detroit Public School system...I know there may be a few gems hiding in the system...but overall...it's not meeting the educational needs of the children. I know plenty of parents that do everything from use other people's addresses to home school to paying more than they can afford in sburban housing just so their children can get a fair shot at an education.

Formerdetroiter,
You are also correct, children who attempt to assimilate into surburban schools, after being under-educated and behaviorally unattended to in Detroit Public schools (Yes, I know it is the parents job to make sure their children behave, but the environment in which they are placed plays a role)sometimes have a difficult time adjusting to the curriculum as well as the environment.

I am a proud Detroiter who was born in the Motor City and have remained in the city or near suburbs for my entire life! I'm pretty shy until you get me behind the safety of a computer screen and then...watch out! The keyboard becomes my instrument through which I share my two cents! I know, I know...two cents ain't much in this economy..but they're mine and to me....they're priceless!
