A judge ruled today that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick violated the terms of his bond during an altercation with a sheriff's deputy, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The Free Press, a fellow Gannett publication, says Deputy Brian White testified that Kilpatrick "shouted expletives" and "threw him into his investigative partner" while they were trying to serve a subpoena yesterday afternoon.

White told the judge that Kilpatrick, a Democrat, "made racially charged remarks during the incident."

After hearing White's testimony, Judge Ronald Giles ordered Kilpatrick to pony up $7,500 to remain free. He revoked Kilpatrick's right to leave the state on business without prior approval and ordered him to undergo random drug tests.

"I have locked up defendants for approaching or saying things to witnesses for a lot less, let alone touching them," Giles says. "I'm at a loss to defendant Kilpatrick's behavior here. It's irrational."

The Associated Press says Kilpatrick left the courthouse without commenting, but a lawyer for the embattled politician denied that his client shoved the process server
