I was 23 years old when the riots broke out in Detroit. I have to say Detroit wasn't in that great a shape before the riots. The school system was already failing us, and downtown Detroit was already declining. I Moved to California in 1978 at my mothers encouragement and moved back in 1985. I was appalled at what I saw. Just the other day one of my sons took me on a tour of downtown Detroit, Bell Isle and the River front I was amazed!! I see all the new housing developments all around Detroit. I think we are getting there! I am a Detroit native and I love my City. The best years of my life were spent in the 50's.  Our landlord was Damon Keith, I went to School with the likes of Areatha Franklin, Lamont Dozier, Willie Horton, Henry Carr and many others.  I say, raise our children and keep our neighborhoods clean, vote and support our local schools, we will be just fine!

Finally! A true supporter! I love your optimism..I do not currently live in Detroit, but would seriously consider moving there if all of what is happening continues...
We need more people like you in and around the D to change things.
Isn't downtown just wonderful? My family and I are regular visitors. My husband grew up there (west side)..we have thought many times about coming there for good...
Great post Carolej60!

I think the Parents need to take a hold of their kids and get them to fall in line. The schools can't teach the kids if the parents don't care how the child does. Education is the future for all of us.

This subject just brings out all the wounds frustrations and truths. I probably could have predicted what Tall was going to write. He could probably tell you that I would say that the people who have been in control of this city the past 50 years have been crooks and idiots. I have said in past blogs that there are burned and abandoned buildings that are still standing from that riot. That would never be the case in suburban cities. It's a shame. It has forced me to make plans to leave Detroit. I have to leave the city I was born and raised in but am not proud of.

The only comment I want to make is about the Detroit School System of the 60's. It was strong. Our teachers were strict and I still remember their names and their attitudes about education. Someone please comment if you went to Owen or Kennedy elementary. Mrs. Webster, Mrs. Headley, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Shephard the Science teacher. I would love to here from someone from Pelham Junior High. After the riots everyone scattered.

I work in Detroit and I see the improvements that are being made. I love big cities and I would love for Detroit to be the type of place i can take my family to an a Saturday night for dinner and a show. I think they are moving in that direction but the crime is still an issue. Clean up the crime and more people will move to Detroit. That is the only reason people do not like Detroit. Aside from all other things it is the crime. people want their families to be safe and no man I know would ever take his family somewhere that places them in jeaopardy as opposed to a place where crime is at an extreme minimum.

Born and raise in Detroit, there has been 3 world series won by the Detroit Tigers in my life time this will make number 4. I am old enough to remember 2. I went to Northwester high school with one of the 1968 Detroit Tigers, "Willie Horton" The first High School player to hit a ball out of Tiger Stadium, used to be known as Briggs Stadium. Yes I'm a tiger fan for life. I stayed in San Diego when we won in 1984. I had to watch the celebration on TV. It's true Detroit is a sports town all the way. I remember Gordy Howe, Dave Bing, Al Kaline, Barry Sims. I love Detroit.
