Chit chat ?
Well , you started it !
Now we'll have a bunch of chicks [ hopefully hotties ] on here talking about who won on American Idol last season .
Or , god knows what .
Let's start it of in a manly fashion .
How about hunting season ?
I'm looking forward to a freezer full of venison this year .
Most people don't know freezer requirements for meat , so , lets go there first .
Pork has a recomended freezer time of 6 months [ unless it is ham or bacon , in which case , it can last as long as a year ]
Chicken , : 6 to 9 months [ unless previously cooked ] .
Beef , : 6 to 9 months [ unles previously cooked or cured ]
Lamb , ,: 6 to 9 months .
Fish , : 6 to 12 months .
Venison , : 12 to 18 months .[ because there is almost no fat or trans fatty acids in venison ]
When talking about survival foods , freezer foods are not usualy on the list , because thay depend on a power grid for them to last .
Dried goods are by far the best , and can last for up to 15 years if stored properly .
Spirulina [ pasta and such ] is one of the best bangs for the buck .
Beans and rice follow closely behind .
Back to hunting and venison .
You can make anything with venison that you make with beef .
The good thing is , there is no fat or trans fatty acids in the meat .
Also , there are no steriods injected into wild game .
If you are a hunter , kep in mind the area that you hunt , because northern deer , eat tree bark to survive in the winter months , and gives them a " gamey taste " .
If you hunt in the thumb , you can be asured that the local population of dear live on soy

No doubt about that, Shock; I never took up hunting but my brother & alot of my ex-coworkers in the construction company go up to Crystal Lake in the U.P. You can bet I get plenty of fresh venison from my brother & it is delicios! I marinate mine with Italian Dressing overnight. The gamey taste is okay but not all the time for me. Come to think of it, he does have a freezer full & I will need to restock on that after our move to Chaesterfield Township is behind us!

I still "hunt" occasionally, you know, get up at the crack of 9:30, wander out to my favorite hunting spot (under a tree), lay my rifle across my lap, and take a nap until I hear the kids atv's ripping around through the woods, go back to camp, eat lunch, hang out around the campfire until dusk, go back out to my spot, sit there for about twenty minutes until the feeling of a euchre game is underway without me overwhelms me, head (run) back to camp, play euchre until 4:30 in the morning then go to sleep to start it all over again the next day.

Ahhh, the joys of getting older. LOL

We've got a camp S.W. of Gwinn in the U.P. Deer herd is a little thin but I got an oldy couple of years past. Dressed out at 210 with a huge 8 point rack. DNR said he was about 12. Actually pretty good eating. I'll be leaving tomorrow morning for a couple of weeks at the camp. So looking forward to the good time we always have. Good luck to all and have a safe hunt.

(fingers tapping lightly, occasional yawns). Oh hello! But seriously, has anyone's hunting plans been affected by the economy? I'm certain hunters and others alike are happy that the gas prices have dipped this season. Zoot_Suit-Thanks for sharing that story. Chiefpa17-You made a very valid point, stating that everyone has a safe hunt. Safety above all is the most important factor in that sport.

I have hunted in the past in both the Upper and Lower Peninsula's (Different Years) and if I could now it would be the UP for sure. They hunt when the hunt, and drink when they drink. I wish I could say the same about the Lower.

Mikey66-Kind of sounds like my brother's group but they are usually good for 4 or more a season. My brother goes up to the U.P. alot more than the others because he helps maintain cameras, bait piles (when allowed) and just plain likes it up there & I can see why. I do often look at some of his camera disks when he returns and enjoy the venison! He gets alot of his equipment & cameras through Ebay, where we both have been members for quite a while. Between the both of us, we have over 1000 positive feedbacks & the deals for any sportsman can be hard to pass up. I've never been to their cabin up in Crystal Lake but knowing most of them are in the building trades, it is decked out to the max. I often hear them talk about how they made an addition to it or remodeled it.

SOUNDS LIKE THE PIERRE CARDEN OF WOODS AND WATERS , SOME AREAS I HUNT YOU ALWAYS GET SOME JACKOFF LOCAL THAT WILL BUST INTO A NICE CABIN LIKE THAT AND CLEAN IT OUT AND TRASH IT, MOSTLY KIDS IM SURE , I HUNTED NORTH OF SKIDWAY LAKE IN OGEMAW COUNTY AND IF YOU LEFT A PIECE OF ROPE IN THE BACK OF YOUR PICK UP TRUCK AND WENT INTO A STORE IT WOULD BE GONE ,THERE'S A LOT OF LOWLIFES AROUND THERE , A LOCAL STORE OWNER IN THAT SAME AREA TOLD ME THAT SOME 14 YEAR OLD KID SHOT HIS FIRST DEER ON HIS FIRST HUNT EVER AND HIM AND HIS DAD WENT INTO HIS STORE AND WHEN THEY CAME OUT , NO DEER , AND IT WAS A NICE 7 POINT , THATS THE SUCK PART OF HUNTING , IVE RUN INTO ALOT OF A55HLOES IN THE WOODS THAT WILL TRESSPASS ON PRIVATE LAND AND RUIN MY HUNT , OR YEARS AGO WHEN I HAD SOME TREE HUGGING ENVIRONMENTALIST ON STATE GAME LAND PURPOSELY PLAYING LOUD MUSIC IN THE WOODS TO SPOOK THE DEER , PROBLEM WAS THEY WERE DOING ON THE PRIVATE LAND THAT BORDERS THE PUBLIC LAND , I READ IN A HUNTING MAGAZINE THAT THESE ENVIRONMENTALIST DO THIS AND CONFRONT THE HUNTER AND TRY TO GET THEM TO SAY OR DO SOMETHING THREATENING AND ANOTHER PERSON WITH A CAMCORDER UNDER COVER IN ALL CAMO TO CAPTURE THE MOMENT AND THEN THE HUNTER ENDS UP IN JAIL , PRETTY BALLZY IF YOU ASK ME

Mikey66-I would imagine that the closer one's cabin/blinds are to even a sparsely populated area, the more chance they have of being rambled through. I know if I were even thinking about that, I would also consider the fact the owners are also hunters-HELLO?-And wouldn't think that would be a good idea. Their cabin is well off the beaten trail, whereas they have to take ATV's about 5 miles to get to it. Like I stated, I don't hunt but I can understand how the U.P. differs from the top of the mitt. If someone happens to get caught, they should be prepared to suffer the consequences & hopefully they won't get killed for such a stupid act.

I love using my .50 cal. with a one shot one kill philosophy .
No tracking blood trails for me !
Venison is the food of the gods .
Remember in the bible , one last meal wanted was venison ?
I have some great recipies if anyone wants them .
You can make jerky [ bill-tong ] in the oven too .
Do an over-night soak , then turn on your oven to it's lowest sttting , then place strips of meat on a broiler pan [ or whatever ] , then turn them every hour or two , for about 6 to 8 hous .
Job done !

I don't like to track em down either.

I like to take em down with the one shot one kill philosophy too, except I use a 7.62, the trick is (as I am not a trophy hunter) is to pop em between the running lights, they drop like a stone.

No trophy, but lots of meat, and no chasing.

Well I have to say it, WE SCORED....I took down a small racked little beast, but he was heavy as a field dress of 192lbs. Nope, I didn't win the big buck contest as someone brought in a 10 pointer that field dressed at 226lbs.

But I did fill the other 4 licenses with does, and they were just so so in weight.

Sadly, I also took home a little tick that was inbedded into the skin of my back. My wife took it out, and we went to the doctor the next morning. From the lab results, they cannot make a determination if it was a deer tick, but to prevent possible Lyme disease, I was put on a regiment of DOXYCYCLINE for the next 30 days.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought deer ticks would be out this late in the year, as the temps on Sat. morning was only 28 above, it was snowing and raining, and the wind was out of the North at 20-35 mph's.

SO SCREW HIM. I've got the meat, and the little bastage got me. We'll see in 30 days who the best man was....me, or the tick.
