"A new Associated Press-Yahoo News poll, conducted with Stanford University, shows just how wide a gap remains between whites and blacks.

It shows that a substantial portion of white Americans still harbor negative feelings toward blacks. It shows that blacks and whites disagree tremendously on how much racial prejudice exists, whose fault it is and how much influence blacks have in politics.

One result is that Barack Obama's path to the presidency is steeper than it would be if he were white..."

I guess it was bound to happen, this officially enters race into the election. No more beating around the bush or 'code words'. FWIW, most of the commentators think the actual poll numbers are 'inaccurate' to 'overblown'.

Let's suppose Obama loses, will racism be the excuse the Democrats use to explain the loss and make themselves feel better? Is this the groundwork for the 'what happened' analysis? Will DNC lawyers converge on every district with close results to claim voter fraud, intimidation, or anything else they can think of to change the results (in the '06 mid-term elections it was reported that the DNC was prepared to dispatch 2000 lawyers to any precinct where a Democrat was expected to win and didn't; there were no issues because the Dems took the House and Senate)?

"It shows that a substantial portion of white Americans still harbor negative feelings toward blacks."

But I bet it doesn't say a thing about the negative feelings black Americans feel toward Whites, does it?

I wasn't so concerned about the poll results, they can be manipulated. I was wondering if this was the groundwork for an excuse if Obama doesn't win. It's never the policies, it's always some dirty trick -- like Kerry was 'swift boated'. See the rest of the poll below...

Here is the rest of the poll -

The poll, however, shows that blacks and whites see racial discrimination in starkly different terms. When asked "how much discrimination against blacks" exists, 10 percent of whites said "a lot" and 45 percent said "some."

Among blacks, 57 percent said "a lot" and all but a fraction of the rest said "some."

Asked how much of America's existing racial tension is created by blacks, more than one-third of white respondents said "most" or "all," and 9 percent said "not much." Only 3 percent of blacks said "most" or "all," while half said "not much at all."

Nearly three-fourths of blacks said white people have too much influence in American politics. Only 12 percent of whites agreed. Almost three times as many blacks as whites said blacks have too little influence.

Far more blacks than whites say government officials "usually pay less attention to a request or complaint from a black person than a white person."

One in five whites have felt admiration for blacks "very" or "extremely" often. Seventy percent of blacks have felt the same about whites.

And finally...

The poll may surprise those who thought Obama's appeal to young voters proves Americans in their 20s and 30s are clearly less racially biased than their parents. The survey found no meaningful differences among age groups in whites' perceptions of blacks, although older whites appear more likely to discuss their views.

Some findings fall into the glass half-empty or half-full category. One-fourth of white Democrats ascribed at least two negative attributes to blacks. But two-thirds of those Democrats said they will vote for Obama.

I doubt you'll have to "suppose" Obama will win...I believe he will....unfortunately.

Three months ago, I would have agreed. Between his radical past and associations, Sarah Palin, and Biden speeches, things look much better. If believing it's racism makes them feel better, so be it...

Of course the Democrats will challenge if they loose! That's what they do. They are playing a dangerous game here, playing the race card (and it does always come from that side). What do they want? Riots if the black guy doesn't win?? I'm not voting for him but not because he's black. I'm not voting for him because he is a far left liberal with radical left ties who lacks judgement and the experience to lead our great country.

Lets ask ourselfs a question. A Black American can walk into a all white Tavern without a problem. Have a drink a burger and be on his way. Now do you think, or would you? Being white walk into a all Black American Tavern and have a burger and a drink. No lets talk Racism

I sure pray you're right blu.....i just don't see it though. You said it yourself, between his radical past and associations, Should have been enough for him to loose to Hillary...he didn't...and far too many are still enamored with him, not too mention the biased/liberal media which has entirely too much influence.

come on grown people. history it was whites who did not want blacks going to school with them. it was white who wanted black to sit on the back of the bus. it was white who did not want blacks eating in restarant with them. it was whites only this and whites only that. i even heard a friend of mine who is white and date a black person said her family dis owned her because she was dating a BLEEP. so in a way i can see why blacks may have bad feeling toward whites. now fast forward to 2008. white believe blacks are lazy, always looking for a handout, they are a bunch of criminal, they alway show anger, they on welfare and food stamps. now blacks think most whites are racist they believe no matter what blacks will never get a fair shake.now is black right for feeling this way no maybe blacks did not get the loan because his credit is bad and not because the white loan officer is a racist. i believe their are white who will not vote for obama because he is black and blacks who will vote for him for that very reason his race.this does not make it right on neither side. when we really can judge a peron on what he or she have done in life and not by race. this world would be a whole lot better. just remember blacks have been voting for whites for many years with out no discussion on race. now for some reason if whites vote for a black person racisum come into play. if a person black or white can better my life and my living the hell with race just pick the best man or woman for the job.

fgeason -
I understand racism exists, but constantly bringing it up and rubbing everyones' faces in it will never change attitudes. I work with many black professionals, and whether you believe it or not, race is a non-issue they're just co-workers.

As long as race pimps like Jackson and Sharpton can make a buck, racism will exist.

You know, Bush gets dumped on for not having an 'exit strategy' for the war in Iraq. What is the exit strategy for this 40-year war on racism? What is victory? When will things be equal?

hey, fgeason, what about black racism against white; I'd say it's much higher than the other way around. Jews got a bad shake too and you don't hear them bad mouthing the Germans all the time...they get on with it..

News flash folks, Senator Barack Obama is NOT black! He is bi-racial. And he was raised in a white household. I think we do his mother's memory as well as his grandparents a grave disservice by only recognizing his African heritage. Those who won't vote for him based on race refuse to recognise that he has any caucasian blood running through his veins. Those among you who WILL vote for him based solely on race say "Yeah his mom was white, BUT..." Now is this blog about race, or is this blog about Obama's race?

And Curly, yes. The answer to your question is yes. A white American can go into an all black establishment and sit and have drinks. Only in tv land do black folks beat up on white people just for being white. When a young white guy goes to the worse part of an urban area to purchase drugs and tries to gyp the dopeman and catches a beating, he say it was because he is white. If a young black man goes to the same area to purchase drugs and the same thing happens it's considered drug related activity. I'm a black man who lives in the burbs and has mostly white friends. I'm usually the ONLY black person at most of the functions that I attend. When I invite my white friends to functions they feel afraid when they are the only white- at first. After they realize that tv blacks and real blacks are quite different, then we truly begin to talk freely and maybe even let our guards down.

Greeny your talking about the Burbs where we are all civil white or black. Sorry I should of said DETROIT. I have black friends too that are better people than some whites I know. By the way you can still get drugs in the Burbs. Guess where they come from

Staying on the post. The poll shows that somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% blacks will vote for NObama. That is the racism. There is another analogy on the race thing. Those blacks that would say it was a race thing if he lost, Louis F and rev. Wright may want him to loose because their job is over if he wins. Nothing to raise havock over, claim any more mistreatment. Hmmmm. NObama. Blu, green, Hmmm your color. Joke. I agree with you two race is really no longer an issue. Not like the 50's. And we were not the abused OR the abusers. NOn issue. NObama

I don't know where people are getting this arrogant impression that Obama should win! The polls don't poll everyone! Many people lie anyway ,especially when you got idiots calling you during dinner time about who ya gonna vote for. It's really none of their business anyway,so I never tell them the truth!!

The only people who have even mentioned race is obama and his supporters. I am black and i definitely will not be voting for this guy! No way! It has everything to do with his views and his charlatan character and nothing else.

Why should blacks vote for this guy simply because he is black, but tell whites they should not vote for the white guy for the same exact reason or they are considered racist?

It's a stupid way of thinking by whites and blacks who are supporting Obama !

I think that what a lot of you bloggers are missing is that african americans have voted for caucasions running for president 100% of the time, and historcally have voted democratic by 92 percent. The fact is is that whovever would have emerged as the democratic nominee would still get 92 percent of the african american vote, so the argument that african americans would vote for Obama just because of his race is the dumbest thing I've heard. Perhaps these historical facts will awaken your common sense.
