Hey Gang---

Did anyone see the qualifying crash at the Texas Motor Speedway with Michael McDowell?? The 26 year old rookie driver is lucky to be alive tonight after taking a 195 mile per hour trip into the retaining wall!!!!  This crash instantly took me back to the incident at Daytona when Dale Earnhardt lost his life--- and while the angle of the car into the wall was similar for McDowell, the real hero in all of this was the SAFER wall system...... SAFER stands for "steel and foam energy reduction", and the wall performed above and beyond expectations....... For McDowell to walk away from that crash unhurt is amazing and a credit to NASCAR's safety measures........... When you see things like that, it's obvious that the cash spent on track improvements is money well spent.  What do you think??!?!

The question now is why we can't have stuff like that is our personal cars!!!! I would pay extra for the chance to be completely safe behind the wheel........

That crash is amazing for sure! I watched it 20 times.

Regarding our personal cars, until we get 20 point roll cages, 5 point harnesses and helmets, you won't see this type of protection no the street.

Because of Earhardt's wreck at Daytona we have had the safety updates in NASCAR we see today. HANS, etc, it is incredible.

I'm glad for all of the changes for safety. I don't think they would work so well in a street car. The drivers can barely turn their head. Unless your talking about safety barriers on the freeway. I have an old truck and a new truck and I noticed after just bumping a mailbox with the new one my whole quarter panel is dented and scratched with a small hole where the mailbox woodpeckered the truck. My old truck would have just had a scratch and maybe a small ding. It seems the new vehicles are made of tin. My old truck is on it's way to 400k miles and still runs strong and is tougher than the new one. All it needs is air bags and I feel it would be safer than the new one. They both get about the same mileage and the old one has a 8ft bed vs a 6ft bed on the new one. However the new one is a 4 door, but then it has the Hemi that cuts to 4 cylinders at steady speeds. Considering all this, I'd choose the old one for safety durability and reliability.

Yeah, I was bummed when baseball was still going. I really don't like watching baseball. Love to play though. I bet that most people that watch baseball have all the sports channels. Run it on there and leave nascar alone! lol I can't afford all those channels, but really only want the speed channel. For the price of one extra channel, I'll pass and do something off the couch!

I came to Fox 2 in 1998 after spending time in the Sunshine State. My career began while I was at the University of Miami and I tried out for 3rd base on the Miami Hurricanes baseball team as a "walk on"!!! I was the last guy cut that season and I decided then that if I couldn't make the team I was going to stay close to the program.... so in addition to being the program director at the campus radio station-- WVUM, I also helped start up the campus cable television network... and that led to a job as a Cameraman shooting sports for local station WCIX. I caught a break when I was offered a chance to go "on air"..... That chance allowed me to secure the weekend spot at WFOR in Miami, Florida and then I made the jump to Motown. This city is one of the best sports towns in the nation and I'm pleased as punch to be a part of the magic. I think that the Sports Staff at Fox 2 is the best, and we always strive for excellence. There's no phony baloney, sing along jingles or "video arcades" here-- just straight sports presented in a truly creative way..... That's how I like it, and if you feel that way too, then I'll see you at 5, 6, and 10 for our daily broadcasts-- and Sportsworks Sunday Night, right here on FOX 2!!
