... before cell phone use while driving is declared illegal?

A 13-year-old girl will never celebrate her 14th birthday because a tractor-trailer driver was too busy fussing with his/her cell phone.

Only ten days ago, 25 people died in a train wreck because the train engineer was too busy texting someone to notice a red light signal.

How many of us have has crashes or close-calls with drivers who were paying more attention to their phone conversations than their driving?

How many more people have to die before cell phone use while driving is declared illegal?

Tallahassee? Are any of you paying attention? Or are you all on your cell phones?

It is hard to believe that some try to drive and use their cell phones (or text) and they cant even walk and chew bubble gum at the same time.

I had to buy one of those phones with the big buttons to see who I was dialing while riding my motorcycle.

Last I heard cell phones were the cause of less than 2% of accidents. I bet coffee or makeup has caused more damage.

There's just no way to legislate stupid people
into smart people. Children need to be taught
responsible behavior, and that life is precious,
from the time they can crawl. Parents, teachers,
and other people of influence must teach these
values. Legislation can not keep pace with each
new piece of technology that may pose a threat.

eric -- agreed.

msc -- lol.

jim -- the studies I've been reading have estimated that if you're talking on your cell phone, you're at least 40% more likely to get into an accident.

My own experience has been this:
if it wasn't for the non-cell-phone-talking drivers taking evasive action, these yakkers would be crashing and burning all over the place. They're oblivious.

wiz -- no idea what you're trying to say. This is a non-partisan safety and common sense issue.

cyn -- I agree up to the last sentence. Legislation HAS to keep up. As to the rest -- society can't force people to act with common sense and courtesy. Try to educate of course, but in the end all you can do is punish bad behavior, and hope the lesson is learned.

I use to think my grandparents were funny when they told stories that always started with.

" I remember when"

Where has commen sense gone to?

As adults, we must take the lead by example.

Local goverments have taken the step, in my area, to ban the use of cell phones and texting while driving in school zone areas.

While some of us have used our common sense to take it upon ourselves to ban our usage while driving, it seems the rest of the drivers actually must be told by our goverment not to do it.

If we need a law that will allow law enforcement to pull you over for use of your cell or other devices while driving then perhaps that is what we need to do.

There was a time when we actually had to wait to get to a land line to communicate.

Driving, today, is a huge game of dodge ball.

I believe the age of driving should also be rised.

On September 23, 2008, a tragic (Marion County Public Schools) school bus accident claimed the life of a 13-year old student and traumatized the remaining 20 students on the bus. Several injuries occurred.

This bus accident happened while dropping off students at a designated bus stop on Southbound Highway 301 in Citra, Florida.

A petition has been started to urge the Marion County Public Schools Board to change the way our children are transported to and from school.
