To the Commission on Presidential Debates: Thank you for sponsoring these debates. Now ditch that lousy format you used on Tuesday night. It was awful.

If you had never heard a word from Barack Obama or John McCain over the last six months, you loved this town hall format, because all you got was an extended version of their TV commercials and their stump speeches. Blah, blah, blah.

If you have been up to speed on their rhetoric, some differences did emerge but they were few and far between and neither gentleman did much to advance their cause.

McCain needed a game changer. If he had one, he left it in the locker room. If you were a journalist, you were pretty much bored to tears and frustrated at the same time.

A format that allows common folks, God love ‘em, to ask questions sounds very American. But the quality of the questions was weak at best and only allowed the candidates to segue into what they wanted to say. The most frustrated guy in the room was Tom Brokaw, the veteran NBC moderator.

Reporters get paid to ask tough questions, to do follow up questions, and to hold candidates tootsies to the fire. He got to do none of that. He tried but the format rules tied his hands. He was reduced to a glorified timekeeper and he didn’t do a bang up job on that either.

Blame the two campaigns for this. They negotiated the rules and there is one objective in doing so: Reduce the chances of your guy making a mistake. The rule s worked perfectly for Obama and McCain. Not so perfect for the electorate which got warmed over sound bites for ninety minutes.

For the final debate, it would be great if they took health care, taxes, Iraq, energy, and pork barrel spending off the agenda. Isn’t there somebody out there who can come up with some other questions that might give us more insight into who these guys are and what kind of president they would make?

It's true that the debate did not give any more insight into who John McCain and Barack Obama are behind closed doors. The format of the debate allowed the candidates to recite from memory perhaps a lot of what was said before in different formats. That is why I have spent a lot of time personally researching the them both. Yesterday I heard a radio program in which they were interviewing a writer who had written an article on John McCain, so I decided to look it up on the internet when I got home. I highly recommend that others look it up as well.

Truly, if you want to read an eye-opening article about John McCain, go to rollingstone.com. The name of the article is Make-Believe Maverick: a closer look at the life and career of John McCain reveals a disturbing record of recklessness and dishonesty. The article in in October issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. The author is Tim Dickinson. I warn you, it is long: 18 pages if printed out.

The author presented a comprehensive look at John McCain's life from youth to the present. After reading it, I was convinced that if what was said in the article were true, John McCain should not be elected president, now or ever. His temperament and character are not those of a man who I want holding the highest office in the land.

You might consider reading the article and then decide for yourself.

Tim -- I couldn't agree more. The format just doesn't work. Tired of the safe zone. They need to answer some questions.

Libs are strange individuals: They are waiting for a Messiah and they think they have found him in Obama who is only a sly fox leading them by the nose to nowhere. It's enough to read his biography, his dark origins, his dubious acquaintances, his drug abuse story to know what kind of a character they are placing their trust in. They are following him with the same firm certainty and carelessness of the sleepwalkers regardless of the destination.

Nah , this was all the media's fault .Tom Brokaw was absolutely awful!!! He make sure he did not give mcCain enough time to go after Obama . He didn't want the awyers, wright and rezco thing to come to the fore front.

I don't trust the media any more, they have proven to all of us that they are in bed with Obama ! It's become no better than talk t.v. and late night with David Letterman. Twisted to the left with a "cult like" frenzy!!!

I would like to see candidates forced to be honest, on the spot. When Joe Biden lied 14 times, It should be pointed out right after the words left his mouth. If they don't want to be embarrassed, politicians will tell the truth. I think it would be great to out a liar. Also, it should be pointed out if they don't answer the question. The lawyer side stepping the question needs to be put at a end.

I wanted to see McCain get an opportunity to show his stuff and Town Meetings, with all their unusual questions, are a great setting for a man of his experience. This was no town meeting. The NBC personality picked the questions he wanted to asked and so we got a polished performance from Obama. I'm sure everyone will say he delivered his well rehersed remarks extremely well one more time and McCain didn't look nearly as prepared but it made me realize they can both say anything they want, it is a matter of who you believe will have the country's interests at heart. I still want to vote for McCain.

Nice one Tim; Just "eliminate" talk about taxes, health care, energy & all the rest-Something the Dems have been doing for quite awhile because last I checked, they controlled Congress. Maybe the average person/voter needs to hear their stands on these issues, instead of living in a Dem state that is the poster child for why Dems should not be in power. The media is doing a fine job manipulating Michigan and supporting the Dems as a whole, aren't they? Pointing out the Pubs' faults and applauding the Dems is not my idea of fair reporting to the people.

Tim is a clueless leftist that thinks he is a reporter. His time has so passed him by.

the new media is growing fast because of people like Tim, (how they push their own thoughts on people.)

Tim i still notice you have no will to answer anything ever posted on your blog why is that?

It is a shame that a lengthy blog that you had posted reflects the fact that some prople or at least one, feel that Rolling Stone magazine is an unbiased, factual source of real life, political news. I have to believe that the Dem. candidate had nothing but accolades in this 'mag', as to his experience (what experience?), his truthfulness (uhh?) and his forthrightfulness as to his past associations (just folks in the neighborhood-joke). I was born and raised in Chicago and am too familiar with some of these players-Ayers/Tony Resko) and can smell the influence of Chicago politics.
I am dismayed that the ignorance of the 'young' and wannabe young again (the '30/40 and even some 50-somethings')are failing to seek the whole truth and relying only on blogs and popular rhetoric (I blame unionized educators).
Also, does anyone care about the enormous amount of money that the Dem. candidate has and where it came from, because last I heard, the economy is in wretched shape and real people do not have extra $10 and $20's laying around.

Colt brings up a interesting question and I wonder too. Tim, why are you not a part of your own blog? Is it just part of your job duties and you have already met your job requirements for the week? If so, why bother to blog at all?

Because he is one opf those conceited Dems that thinks their opinion is the only one that matters. It's respectable that Mr. Skubick is somewhat nationally known for his political forte but he abuses the fact that he is a local reporter of our daily news that is supposed to report to all the people, not the "chosen few". Michigan is the poster child for why Dems should not be in power but Fox News seems to duck that issue in this campaign too. As Tim referred to us bloggers in one of his posts, we are the "street corner debaters", not the voters who will decide the next President. I guess being in Lansing's bureau does have it's advantages huh Tim?

I found the debate boring due to the fact we have so much action/choas in the finacial area and a bale out for the institutions and not for us. I want a complete socialist society, we certainly seem to need it now.

Why has Obama not responded to Bergs lawsuit to provide documents critical to his Constitutional obligation to run as President of the US? We need to verify his citizenship!

Here is a debate changer. Invite another candidate. Wow. Imagine, a candidate on 45 states ballots and not being recognized by a supposed balanced media for the most important election in US government.

Ralph Nader was interviewed on the News Hour two nights ago, and this man already has an established base across the nation.

If Obama and McCain both added the 150 billion in pork to the bailout package, and they both voted for the bailout, then they have to be seen as what they are, addicted to gambling.

Its like putting 850 billion on red, or black. Even better, its like putting it all on a single number on the roulette wheel.

Odds are we all lose.

Don't invite Nader, he might have answers that are not supportive of runaway spending, military oil exploration, and he doesn't accept corporate donations.

You can't trust a man who forced the auto companies to install seatbelts in their cars, keeping people alive isn't helping government.

Death, Taxcuts and Bailouts.
