I have a question for all you runners- Is there a right way to breathe when you run?  I ran a lot in college and then had a baby, so I've been walking awhile.  Well I'm trying to do more running again, and I can't get a good breathing pattern going!  I remember a guy telling me a long time ago how to breathe- but I can't remember.  Is it in through your mouth and out through your nose?  Does it even matter?

Breathe in, breathe out. Repeat if necessary.

When I am on the treadmill my instructor tells me to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. I am not sure if it would be the same with actual running though.

Ms. Hughes

There really is no wrong way to breathe. But, if you are exercising hard enough, you will be breathing in and out through your mouth only. Of course the technical term for this is : "mouth breathing".

If you can breathe through your nose, you aren't likely getting into a cardio zone.

As a long time exerciser and fitness coach, I would simply suggest that just like getting into a comfortable pace, you find a comfortable breathing pattern and go with it.

Thanks for the tips- I've tried the different ways (nose/mouth) and there doesn't seem to be an advantage either way- I think I just need to get in shape!! :)

Interesting post, I'm in the process of training for a marathon myself. I usually keep my mouth open when I run and breathe through both my mouth and nose. I never really thought about breathing habits, but my running coach always told me to keep running loose and relaxed. The biggest thing that has helped me is regular running. I keep to a regular schedule and I never fail to change. The regular schedule is very helpful. And I try to increase in gradual increments (I try to run about .1 mile more each day).
