I'm sure you've heard that McCain's choice for VP, Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin has announced her unmarried, 17-year-old daughter, is pregnant.  Obama said right away, "Family members are off limits!"  He says it's a non-issue, after all his mother had him when she was just 18.

So I ask- whether or not it's something the candidates discuss, which I'm sure they'll take the high road-- What do you, as voters, think about it?  Does it matter?

If she had an abortion it should.
Teenage pregnancy is a nation wide problem. We can't imprison our children only hope they make the right choice.

What really matters is the clumsiness of the McCain campaign, and the shocking degree of the candidate's rushed and sloppy decision-making process.

Indeed, there is mounting evidence that the McCain campaign didn't bother to vet the clearly unqualified and publicly hypocritical governor of Alaska:

From the NY Times, which -- instead of simply swallowing what the GOP put out, as the AP evidently did -- called pertinent people in Palin's home state:

In Alaska, several state leaders and local officials said they knew of no efforts by the McCain campaign to find out more information about Ms. Palin before the announcement of her selection.

Although campaigns are typically discreet when they make inquiries into potential running mates, officials in Alaska said Monday they thought it was peculiar that no one in the state had the slightest hint that Ms. Palin might be under consideration.

“They didn’t speak to anyone in the Legislature, they didn’t speak to anyone in the business community,” said Lyda Green, the State Senate president, who lives in Wasilla, where Ms. Palin served as mayor.

More from the Times article:

Representative Gail Phillips, a Republican and former speaker of the State House, said the widespread surprise in Alaska when Ms. Palin was named to the ticket made her wonder how intensively the McCain campaign had vetted her.

“I started calling around and asking, and I have not been able to find one person that was called,” Ms. Phillips said. “I called 30 to 40 people, political leaders, business leaders, community leaders. Not one of them had heard. Alaska is a very small community, we know people all over, but I haven’t found anybody who was asked anything.”

The current mayor of Wasilla, Dianne M. Keller, said she had not heard of any efforts to look into Ms. Palin’s background. And Randy Ruedrich, the state Republican Party chairman, said he knew nothing of any vetting that had been conducted.

State Senator Hollis French, a Democrat who is directing the ethics investigation, said that no one asked him about the allegations. “I heard not a word, not a single contact,” he said.

Mr. French, a former prosecutor, said that he was knowledgeable about background checks and that, he, too, was surprised that the campaign had not reached out to state legislative leaders.

OMG are you for real. Have you ever dealt with a teen let alone a teenage girl who has a serious situation like pregnancy, Even the Obama camp said it was uncool to attack family. How long did it take Obama's mom to tell her parents. Ifilus picking on this subject will drive away woman and teen voters.

That funny that the State of Alaska didn't know she was a possible candidate, the World Wide Web knew. She was in the finals in the Vp bracket outed by Mitt Romney in the finals. It was questionable about a pledge ran by Mitt Romney supporters to push the polls for Romney.
There has been a website up supporting her for VP since 2007

I don't think family should be brought in the politics.
I do find it very ironic that Sarah Palin is against sex education. Now her 17 year old daughter is pregnant. You know what they say, knowledge is power. If Bristol Palin wasn't educated about sex, can you blame her?

The people that claim to be "super Christians" tend to be full of hypocrisy.

We really need to focus on the judgement of John Mccain. He didn't fully vet Sarah Palin. He only met her once, before offering the V.P. slot.

Do we want a President that makes decisions in such a cavalier fashion?

Is anybody shocked that the story Mr. Ifilis quoted came from the New York times?!

Nothing that has come out, including the fact that her current husband had a DUI when he was 22, or that she got in trouble over fishing without a liscence,(insert own DNR joke here) that the McCain campaign didn't know.

Where the McCain campaign erred was underestimating the vast majority of the media's immediate and unrelenting efforts to absolutely destroy her and her family.

Bottom line: they are a family going through what alot of other families go through as well, and handling it consistent with their values.

It should have only been an issue if they had allowed, or drove their daughter to end the pregnancy as that would have not been consistent with their stated values.

If only she would be a good liberal.............it would be a completely different story too wouldn't it?

Biden pushed the bankruptcy bill, which his party was against, because his son was one of those lobbing for the credit cards. that going against his beliefs to appease his son.

Sarah Palin didn't sell out America for her family. She stands by them as they face common everyday trials of life.

I might raise an eyebrow if the pregnant Palin teen was, like, thirteen! It's an issue to people for whom it is an issue. It's not an issue to me. Now if we were talking about her teenage daughter having had an abortion, then there'd be something to discuss.

rasguy24 - You are right. You can't imprison your children but, you can be a parent. Communication between parent and child is very important. Palin is against sex education. Go figure, her daughter is now pregnant. Education is the key!!

We have education in our school here. there still a big problem here.

A parents words are strong, as a teen my girlfriend had more influence then my parents did. I still love them just the same. Did i always make the right choice no, but because of the morals taught by my parents grand parents and church i had a moral limit of my own.

I am only going to say one thing about this teen pregnancy issue. Or two.

.....the media frenzy jumped all over this one .......still....Politics is a "dirty game"

I'm going to be honest with you, it is wrong for any of us to judge Palin's daughter!

THIS IS REALLY A PRIVACY ISSUE. IT'S ABOUT THE NEED TO RESPECT A PERSON'S PRIVACY.

Personally i have learned a valuable lesson on this topic. I am single and i value my privacy very much so i wouldn't want anyone to invade my space.

.....unless i ALLOW that person in. By choice.

In other words when i want you to KNOW SOMETHING i will tell you. lol

What should be commended is the fact that the young girl kept her baby and i bet she is a good mother too.

This could backfire on the momentum of the Democrats & Obama.

Foxfan6 - Mccain was the person to release the information that Bristol Palin was pregnant. Mccain wanted this information out there! Better now then later.

Wow--- I don't think it should be as prominent in the headlines as it is. Bristol is pregnant. Her choice is to keep the baby. Done... next topic.
(by the way--- all this wonderful sex ed in our schools has really cut back on STD's--- umm 1 in 4 YIKES, maybe the curriculum needs to be reviewed)

justsewhappy - Sex ed. is one piece of the puzzle. The other and most important is good parenting.

1 in 4 has STD's - maybe we should have condoms available at school in an annoyomous fashion.

What would happen with no sex education. would it be 2/4. last I knew, education was a good thing.

Sex ed been in my school system for over 20 years. so No it's not working.

The funny thing is when I was in school we never heard of a 13, 14 or 15 year old be pregnant, education start around are 13, one could say it adds to the problem.

Topic is sort of changing to Sex Ed. Seems like a logical progression.

I really don't have a problem with it. But, as it has been pointed out, Sex Ed has been around for along time, yet, teenagers still get pregnant even if kids still have information and access to all kinds of pregnancy protection aids.

Certainly appropriate understanding and good parenting are important. But, in the final analysis, it comes down to kids making a decision. And the only choice that eliminates any chance of pregnancy is abstinence.

What it is most disturing to me is how it has become "no big deal" for a young girl to be pregnant as a teenager, out of wedlock. In my youth, there was a social stigma associated with it. That alone was a deterrent.

What has happened to that deterrent???????
