Last football season (2007), I blogged quite a bit about our Detroit Lions. The first 8 games really had us fans going, they were 6-2. Their record for the last 8 games was 1-7, rather dismal and disappointing. Take heart Lions fans! A new season is upon us.

Pre-season games start next month. The Lions are playing the 2008 season with a clean slate. I, for one, am looking forward to even a better year than last, despite Sporting News' prediction of only 3 wins. [Some people just don't know about learned optimism].

To help fuel my fire, to keep me emotionally invested in the season, I placed a $60.00 bet on the Lions to win the superbowl at 70:1 odds. I am in the city of Lost Wages, I mean, Las Vegas, right now. A guy really needs to know where to place a bet to get the best odds. The sports book at Fiesta Henderson has the Lions at 50:1 odds, but the Flamingo has them at 70:1.

I agree, the Lions are a long shot, but not as long as the Falcons, who are at 200:1. I also know that nobody can predict the future, crooked refs aside. We'll see what happens this year.

Well, as Huel Perkins would say, "Let It Rip", fellow sports fans and bloggers. Am I all wet or am I all wet? [No typo].

Man you come straight out of comic book with that thinking! If you think that the lions are going to be successful with the picks that they made and the free agents they released and picked up I have some land I would like to sell you. The lions are a consistent joke.

I remember the year 2006. I remember how Detroit baseball fans wanted Dave Dombrowski's hide. I also remember how the Detroit Tigers came out of nowhere to finish the 2006 season 3 games shy of a World Series championship. Nobody thought they could do it. Could 2008 be the same type of year for the Lions? We will see.

Why would you even compare another sports franchise to the lions? They aren't even real lions, they're kittens. I'm going back to talking about Kwame if all we can come up with is how good the lions(MEOW)can be!

ALL
At Least we have LIONS and CARDINALS not Sea Horses as do the Vermont University Lacrosse team.
Opening camps for most were this weekend. Cardinal QB back from a broken collar bone, Warner holding the pads for him.
Need to get a good sports column on the Lions. I can do a NFL Search I reckon.
end
Go MSU Tigers, another animal team, Memphis Tn.
end

i learned my lesson on getting my hopes up with the detroit liars i mean lions,i was soooooooooo pumped last yr and when we played the giants at 6-2,micheal strahan said it best, thats the worse 6-2 team i ever played and the lions only won 1 more game afterwards. I understand why barry said BLEEP it and quit, these guys just come to detroit as a possible steppin stone to get on a better team,im sure cj will be demanding a trade by yr 4,we actually have a chance to beat green bay cuz they don't have farve anymore so if they cant beat them then all is lost. but anything is better than rooting foe the miami hurricanes or florida gators

One thing the Lions have going for them: They don't leave men on base!

If you think the Lions are going to have a winning season you need to go directly to your proctologist to get help getting your head out. As long Mr. Ford owns the team, they will be losers. As long as fans like you atend games and Mr. Ford makes a profit, they will be losers. The need an empty stadium before anything worthwhile will happen to them.

Hey, guys.
The $60.00 bet was a fun bet, something to keep me watching the Lions this season. You never know with some of the long shots, though. Remember the Arizona Diamond Backs in 2001, the Boston Red Sox a few years ago when they got rid of the curse of the Bambino and even this year's Tampa Bay Rays. We'll see. The people who don't think the Lions will do well this year have more going for them than people like me ... someone who bets for fun on the long shots.

I did other stuff in Vegas. Watch for a future blog (with pictures) on a restaurant I visited in the Nevada desert: Detroit Motor City Coney Island. A touch of Detroit in the desert. Sweet (and salty) place, if you like coneys, Faygo pop, Sanders Hot fudge cream puffs and Vernors, in the desert!

And Brian,
I already saw the proctologist AND an optometrist this year. Together, they helped me to get rid of a poopy outlook on life!

I liked your optimism Stooltime," at least the Lions don't leave men on base." Now that could very well be a classic.

ALL
Arizona Cards looked good on run defense, poor as usual on pass defense.
Corner backs needed for sure.
Watched the Oakland folks and they seem ready to rumble.
Our old Nemesis the Philly Eagles looked fair also.
NFL weather here on the Bluff, cotton is blooming and the rice is reaady for Budwieser to come and harvest.
