One of the presidential campaign slogans in 1928 was, "A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage". It worked to get Herbert Hoover elected as our 30th president in 1929.

Fast forward to today. What kind of idealistic campaign slogans are being made by the presidential candidates in 2008?

Once these idealistic slogans are identified, ask yourself the question: Do you buy into them?

It has been said by Dr. Leo Bascaglia, now deceased, but once a prominent self-help guru, that thinking idealistically helps to keep you young in a world that can rattle your cage at any given moment.

Does idealism work in politics, though? It has its way of getting people elected as president, but what happens after the election? It's a seven letter word called, REALITY.

Think about the difference between idealism and reality come the November election. There's a time and place to be idealistic, and a time and place to be realistic. I'm having a difficult time figuring out how idealism works in the world of politics.

Can someone who is politically idealistic help me out?

By the way, despite the slogan of a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage in 1928, the United States became engulfed in the Great Depression when the stock market crashed on October 29th, 1929.

I'm much more inclined to vote for the candidate who can tell me how America will confront adversity and nurture its prosperity, both of which are underscored by the liberties, freedoms and responsibilities afforded to every American citizen. That might take some deliberate thought. I look forward to the debates between Senators McCain and Obama.

Stolltime,
"Politically Idealistic" I've never thought of that way. I guess I would be consider Politically Idealistic. I like the sound of hope for our country. I like to here them say gas will go down and taxes will be cut and if it doesn't happen I do not automatically assume they lied to get my vote, I figure that things are a lot easier said than done. That's how I try to look at it because no matter who wins their inherting a lot of the bad stuff we have going on right now. People are waiting in the wings waiting to say "I knew McCain was another Bush!" if he wins and "I knew Obama didn't have enough experience for the job!" if he wins. I believe we has the people have to see these visions with the candidates and help them to beleive that they can turn our country around.( But I'm alot younger what do I know.) I can't wait for the debates also. Thanks for this blog, it allowed me to look at my thinking process a little deeper when I read it. I hope to see more intelligent comments rather than bashing of the candidates. This helps us young folk more than you know. Alot of us read them just don't comment because there usually absurd.

Thank you, loveli1. I find being optimistic takes more work than being pessimistic, but I don't mind. It keeps the stress hormones like cortisol in check.

I appreciate your comments.

"Politically Idealistic" I've never thought of that way..."
Stolltime,Loveli1:
You all have ESP, I do believe. My thoughts this AM were tuned in to this concept. My generation were hard core realists. We had few opportunities to really be idealistic. After collecting scrap, paper, buy war bonds, war stamps, and listening to the WW2 Movie Tone news, we had street ball games. Few of us were Politically Idealistic, we knew the results if our Nation lost. Daily realism, coupled with growing up in uncertainty hardened the idealism into dealing with the threats at hand, in later years the USSR and their tenets.
Now, we have a generation Y that is Policitally Idealistic, ready to absorb, be educated, and to experience the realities of Political Life. Optimism will carry you far, but, in my opine, hard facts, reality proven by R and D of the data will bring you home to conclusions you can live with.
The Four Freedoms, known to the WW2 crowd as the ones we would lose if we lost the conflict, are hard facts. Lose any one of these and the USA house goes down.

would it be fair to say your comments carry some racial overtone. these are the racial sterotype use by the white during segregation. i would be angry at you but because i am a grown man and very religious. i must turn the other cheek. you see i am able to do something you can not. i am able to love my enimies and pray for those who spite me. your words may just be a joke in saying if a black man get in the white house this what you can exspect but to some this can come accross as a racist comment.once again we can disagree on the issue but not the person. when you say things like this. you only thinking of the one person mr obama but what you mist is the other people you may not have intented to hurt. words have power life and death is in the tongue. hitler prove that." just stop the racial crap its no good to no one"

although some of the comments seem racial being a christian should not allow you to wear blinders god is showing the people of this country what is in store with respect to either canidate so being a mature man myself i simply stated what the rev wright said "america's chickens are commming home to roost" to me that is a direct statment about the goverment and the attacks of 9/11 and if you think about that the rev wright could have very well meant that more attacks are to come ! so if that is true and we will be attacked again we should have a president that will deal with the attacks accordingly! jesus said to turn the other cheek not to lay down and die we should take up our swords just as david did against the philisteins and with gods blessing he was victorious! and as a nation that has 83% of its people who believe in god we should be able and willing to defend ourselfs agaist the radical extremist who wish to do us harm so if your just seeing racist comments take it upon your self to look a little closer at the statements and perhaps you can see that although some are! most are just concerens of everyday people that are either afraid or uncertian of what impact this election will have on thier lives we are at war and although most people know that it is unjust being in iraq we have had a major victory over the oppressor that once kept those people under his thumb and not allowed them any type of freedom did you know that many of our troops over there are christians and some have lead iraqi people to christ! that right there is a strong statement about what is goin

i am a very reasonable person and i myself do not think we deserve to be attack on 9/11. but for every action their is a reaction. their is a cause and effect to everything.do you really believe we have the right to invade another country on a assumption.in everyday life can i hit you if i believe you are about to hit me. the answer is no. you only can use self defence if you are being attack. get my point. do you believe their are countries in the world who think america is the oppressor. we america in the last 20 years have invaded, liberated or what every you want to call it more cuntries than any other nation. iraq, afganistan, iran, ect. we need to be honest with ourself our government policies in the middle east is causing us to be hated by most in the middle east.next up iran. this country alledgely have nuclear weapon this is the next war.iran can not have weapons this is our enemy.isreal a democracy in the middle east our friend. this country have nuclear weapon. north korea tested a missile which can carry nuclear weapon. we talk to them. we invade iraq on a assumption and talk to the country who showed us they have the weapon. our policy is getting american killed. mccain have the same policy when it comes to the middle east.its up to the people in any country to decide their faith not up to america. remember we had a civil war to bring this country together

"we need to be honest with ourself our government policies in the middle east is causing us to be hated by most in the middle east"
fgeason:
History shows us, the Brits were "hated by most" almost everywhere they established a measure of civilization. The Dutch, the Porteguese, the Chinese, even the jdhows of trade from Arabia, were all disliked, for even being there.
Question is, as implied in almost all of the posts, is Does any nation have a "right" to go beyond his boundaries, in what ever manner.
I would say, yes. If my neighbor is hurting, fell off his roof, I go over there, impose my skills, help him up. THEN do I go home, or stay a while. That is where the shoe meets the road. It is the Staying Awhile that grinds on us, nationally, individualy. The Brits stayed in their "Helped Gain Civilization" effort for 300 years. Likewise, the Dutch and the rest.
Today, the USA is in their shoes. We are the best compassionate, busybodies on the earth. We just can't help but Help!!!
So, to say we have no right, is wrong. We do have a right and a duty to aid our neighbor, when they are being gassed, murdered and polluted by tyrants. It has always been a bone of contention, except for the rescued, the aided and the helped. They never compain.

Volunteer3,
You make quite a compelling argument for helping our neighbors in need. The alternative would be to isolate ourselves and ignore others who are in pain. On the other side of the coin, some people argue that there are many Americans who could use help. We are a country that was founded on self-reliance. The question then becomes: Who gets the help?

if we allow the tyrants of the world to do as they please that in its self would create more contemption for the u.s. and bring forth more enemies you have got to remember the if you can't beat em join em saying and thats what would happen if we let the tyrants do as they please the oppressed peopel would join thier opressors to defeat what would be called thier enemy (the u.s.a.) with the hope that after its done they (the opressed ) would have a easier life afterward so that being said we do and always should try to take care of oue neigbors of this very small planet if not then the folks like saddam hussein would develop weapons that will wipe out the entire worlds population with out any benifit for anyone !

volunteer3 i think our help is misguided sometimes.we tend to concentrate our help only to the middle east where all the oil is. they are tyrants in africa, cuba, south america, soviet union,. if its all about helping the people of these country fight their oppresser than where is the help.when you help the neighbor who fell off the roof did you than stay and help finish building the roof. i think not.its what kind of help you are talking about. food, clothing, water these are help to but to change the owner of the house this is not help. again i say help is one think taking over is another.we can not pick who the help if what you say is true. we should help everyone not just certain countries.

Ok, as I understand your post. Help should not be conditional, be deep, and spread across lots of areas, nations, and without comments as to the root cause of the need for the help.
Now, if this is reasonable, lets look at the USA record. Without a boring list, just this last 6 months, the USA has stood offshore, watching as thousands perished due to a recalictrant tyrant in Burma. Assisted in flood relief, typhoon relief, earthquake relief in China, and continued food relief in the poorer nations south of the Mediterranean.
Help, without conditions? Yep
Help, without overt comment on causes Yep
Help, Immediate and correct Yep
I could go on, but the USA record, while not a big MSS headline, is there, when needed, in depth, and correctly applied.
Our "friends and allies" generally are somewhat awed and jealous of our responses, hence the MSS headlines of "concern"...
