It's getting more and more expensive to buy food. The basics like bread, milk and eggs cost a lot more than last year. Places like Costco and Sams Club recently began to ration rice due to a global shortage. Those are some obvious differences from a year ago. What about the subtle changes going on?

The top two that come to mind for me are Breyer's ice cream and a Wendy's Junior Bacon cheeseburger.

Has anybody else noticed that the price for Breyer's ice cream has remained the same, but the quantity of ice cream in the carton has gone down? What was once in a 1.75 quart container is now in a 1.5 quart container. Same price, less volume.

When Wendy's restaurant introduced their 99 cent sandwiches, the junior bacon cheeseburger was one of them. It originally had one hamburger, a slice of cheese, two pieces of bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and a bun. After some years of success, this sandwich increased in price to $1.29, but wasn't selling as well as when it cost 99 cents. Wendy's then decided to move it back to their new $1.00 menu, but took off one of the pieces of bacon. Recently, I've noticed the same sandwich is still priced at one dollar, but looks a lot smaller. I suppose Wendy's changed the definition of the word, "junior".

I might get some comments about my once-in-awhile diet, but my point is more about what some companies are doing to compensate for their economic losses during this very challenging time in our economy.

Any other examples?

I paid 5.99 lb for bone-in N.Y. strip steak on sale that was normaly 12.99 lb at Meijer . When I looked at their rib-eye and sirlion , it was 17.99 lb . Made my butt pucker . Also made me stockup on some hot dogs and ground round .

shock, I think we are all stocking up on hot dogs and spam! It sucks! Even the little discount grocery store chains...like save-a-lot..should change their name to Save-a-little now! Everything is too expensive!

Wow ! I'm a big save-a lot guy . Mostly for dry goods and canned stock . I'll go there once a month to stock up on canned gooods and non/slow-perishables just for the pantry .
I've got good recipies to share on cheap eating , with a little style .

These price increases are all tied to fuel costs. Everything we eat is trucked in, so your "FREE" market and globalism is doing its job. Let's all continue to follow like sheep to the slaughter.

I went to Meijer today and they had a buy one get one free as usual on frozen chicken breast. Not long ago it was $10.99 and today its $14.99. I skipped and bought the cheaper chicken patties.

Don't want to follow like sheep to the slaughter so I'll go on strike and stop eating until they meet my demands. It may be a brief strike though.

I went to the store just this past week and the off brand shredded cheese was more expensive ( a buck more per package ) than the name brand ones. Same amount in each one. No sale going on though. Cereals more expensive, smaller boxes. Milk had a wide range of prices ( up to a couple of dollars difference ) only real difference was the brand name. Milk is milk,I buy the cheaper.

Shockhazard I am still laughing at your comment about the steaks! Too funny. I would love some of your cheap eat recipes. Maybe start a recipe blog. I am sure with the price of food now people have many creative recipes that are cheap to make.

As fuel prices keep going up, Americans will be making more and more choices about how to spend their money on food. Might we start seeing people buying food that is grown, harvested and produced locally?

Many Michiganders may one day not be able to afford to buy orange juice because to transport it to Michigan from Florida would be too expensive. That's just one example.

It might be time for more and more people to start growing their own gardens, or if you're Shock, raising your own cattle.

Since we are one of the leaders if not the leader in obesity, maybe these high prices all these fast food places have now will help fat America slim down and eat healthy. We are so motivated to make everything in life convenient and instant, that we could not survive on our own if we had to. Growing your own food, paying attention to the environment more because you want a good crop. All that is happening now is a direct result of our laziness. So stop crying about how much that high cholesterol burger cost and start eating well.

I knew somebody would comment on my once-in-awhile diet. Troop, even though I have no problem with crying, it wasn't happening in my post. I agree, obesity is bad; morbid obesity (>100 pounds overweight) can be deadly. You make some other good points about our "instant gratification" culture. That instant gratification mentality can cause more problems for a society than with food choices.

Troop, I also want to thank you for your service to America for volunteering to defend our freedoms and protect our homeland.

On the subject of food, what's the food like for you and the other troops in the Middle East during this time of war?

I know all about hard times. Guess what they're back. You have to learn how to eat low on the hog. Save a lot is a god send, so is Eastern Market. My mother shop there when I was a kid. She would go in the evenings just before closing and they practically give stuff away. She would buy veggies by the bushes and share with others. We had to be the skinniness kids on the block but we never missed a meal.

Hi Stooltime, been a long time, hope all is well with you sir.
Smaller burgers, less fries and less change given back from McD's and so on is not anywhere near the problem we are facing. Eating less or different will not solve the problem we are having in America today. This is all part of some master plan to put us all on our knees...It's not just trickel down economics or a recession....
Yes we do depend on other countries way too much, yes we should watch what we spend, eat, how much fuel we use, ect. And yes this has alot to do with the ....um...er...no one really wants to say....choices we have made, presidents we put in power....and we are paying a dear price for those choices.
When and I do mean when, because I am a true believer in miracles ...this country turns itself around, we must teach the lesson we have learned to our kids so they don't make the same mistake we made. Middle America needs to invest...invest invest, more time into paying attention to budgeting and teaching their kids how to do the same. I was a teen of the 70's and 80's...had no clue and didnm't care a dime about politics,...spoiled little girl ....and so was much of my peers. Now I know better and do better. Anytime I learn something I didn't already know, I teach my boys! I have decided I will give them a great gift......A CLUE.
In the meantime, hunkle down for a long long long haul. This is going to take time to fix.
May God help us all....to remember and not repeat.
God Bless America
