It's difficult to understand a problem when there are so many causes. Cancer is one such problem, but then so is crime. This doesn't mean we as a society should give up or quit trying to understand crime and criminal behavior. Understanding a problem is one of the steps in doing something about it. I am not a forensic expert, nor am I versed in the study of criminal justice. What I want to offer in this post is my opinion as an ordinary citizen, who worries about the perception that more and more of the world is becoming lawless and violent.

I read about violent crime in the paper, hear horrific stories on the radio news and see disgusting examples of predatory human behavior gone awry on the TV every day. It is pathetic how some people treat others. Murders, rapes, school shootings, domestic violence and the list goes on. If it bleeds, it leads. Sometimes I just scratch my head and ask myself, "Is the nature of man basically evil or is it something else"? I don't pretend to have the answers, but I do have some insights, based on what I've heard other people say and write. What are some of the causes of crime?

  • The absence of God in school. If this were true, it could imply that non-believers are automatically lawless people. That would be ridiculous.
  • Mental illness. I believe that there are more mentally ill people who are victims of crime than there are mentally ill people who commit crimes. This is not a fair example of a scapegoat to explain the crime rate.
  • Cities asking for federal funding. Does the reported crime rate go up when a city needs more money to pay for police protection? How does this happen?
  • The Great Society and War On Poverty. This one doesn't explain white collar crime or corruption in the political arena. Criminal behavior shows no preference to socio-economic status.
  • The media's role. Has the crime rate in society always been the same, but because we live in the age of information, we know about it more than we did 100 years ago?
  • Social Engineers. How important is it to instill fear in our youth so that they can learn to tell the difference between right and wrong? Social Engineers say it is abusive to use corporal punishment in school and at home, that it teaches kids to be violent. Other people say sparing the rod spoils the child.
  • Parents role. Some people blame the parents for having out-of-control kids. I will say that parenting is a skill that does not require a license. How many kids join gangs because there is no positive validation and acknowledgement at home?
  • Personality Disorders. This group of people can be very anti-social. Anti-social types have no empathy for their fellow man. Some report an inability to feel any emotions. When asked, "Why did you commit that crime"?, a typical response might be, "Because I can". Medication does not help improve the prognosis.
  • Illicit Drugs. Some people call drug use a "victimless" crime, and that if society legalized illicit drugs, the jails would have room to house truly violent criminals. They might be the same people who've never gone face-to-face with a crack head, who would do anything to get another rock.
  • Prescribed Medication. The mainstream medical community needs to be acutely aware of this one. Risks and benefits of all medications need to be explained to people before they are prescribed and dispensed. It is the responsibility of the doctor to monitor the effectiveness or lack thereof of any prescribed medication. It the responsibility of the person receiving the medication to report any side effects to their doctor.
  • Access to guns or other weapons. Having access to guns is protected by the constitution and is legal if the person has a permit to carry one and has no history of a mental illness or a felony. Even though guns scare the crap out of me, I would feel safer in a room with someone who is law abiding and packing heat than with someone who isn't a law abiding citizen.
  • The Economy. Some people think that a lack of jobs can cause even honest people to act dishonestly. Whose responsibility is it to have marketable skills in order to compete in the job market?
  • Other. Now it's your turn to post what you believe to be a cause of an apparent rising crime rate in society.

Predatory human behavior has always existed . If you believe in god , than you would also have to believe that the highest murder rate in history [ per capita , or population and percentage ] , was when Cain killed Abel . If you don't , then picture a couple of tribes of cave men killing each other over the days hunt with rocks and sticks , fueled by starvation . Being community type creatures , there is also the alpha male and alpha female dominance thing to deal with , these are things that can never be removed , only dealt with . One of the main differences today is that when a murder , or some other vicious crime takes place , you find out about it in real time . Of course the media exploits the type of news that stimulates emotion in one way or another , and helps to hype your feelings . As far as the actions of children , I believe in corperal punishment . Why ? Because it is effective . It instills fear of retaliation for improper bevior . This is how a lie detector works . It works off the reaction stimuluos of instilled perception . I wonder if lie detectors will even work a hundred years from now if our social engineers have their way . Yeah , there is a big problem , social engineers . People that get degrees and think they know all the answers . Some that write books on how to raise children , that have neever had children themselves . Or that get indoctrinated with sociolistic idiology while in schools , then get a degree , and know everything about how a society should be run . Mankind has much more to learn , but they will not learn it , when it is taught bas

Criminal causation was something I studied in college. There are many reasons for crime. As long as humans walk this planet their will be crime.
To answer your post I will with my beliefs and not those I was taught in school

Taking God out of the schools. I do not think it is so much a problem as not talking about God in schools as it is about right and wrong. No matter your own beliefs the Ten Commandments set a pretty good example for people to live by. I think our society has a whole complains about the lack of God; because it seems every other religion is allowed in schools other than christen religion. This I can back up with facts. Schools have introduced perverted agendas for the last 25 years. I do not think it is the schools place to tell our kids that having 2 moms or 2 days is normal. No matter how you want to slice it, it is far from normal. It is also not right that the schools should be telling parents how to be a parent and what drugs their kids should be taking, because the move around in their seat too much. But you see this is the liberal agenda set in our schools today.

I know for a fact that in the 60’s and up to the early 80’s you did not have to worry about a kid coming to school and shooting anything that moved past him or her. Why is it was have to now?

I think I know the answer to this question and it goes to heart of what is wrong with most of this country today.
Kids and most people feel they are owed something, they do not have to work hard it should be given to them. Just like Johnny, who cannot read gets promoted because we do not

Just like Johnny, who cannot read gets promoted because we do not want to damage the boy for life. Well excuse me do we do more damage to little Johnny when he has to go out into the world to fend for himself and cannot read and therefore cannot get a good job?

Do we do more harm to Johnny when we do not tell him no, or that he cannot always win?

Schools need to get back to teaching the 3 r’s and stop with their social agendas and their liberal indoctrination. Now you may say what do I know I have been out of school since 1980, well I still attend college and have seen the liberal agenda in almost everyone of my text books. I have also seen it in everyone on my kids books that they bring home. Yes I am parent who cares and wants to know what my kids are learning

I agree, Colt. It boils down to personal responsibility. Too many people are taught you can get something for nothing rather than to work for it. Too many authority figures are trying to protect our kids from painful feelings as if we can rescue our kids from some of the harsh realities of life. It takes effort and work to be responsible and to be law abiding citizens. Sometimes that is painful.

Shock,
You're right. Predatory human behavior has always existed. It's when it infringes on the rights of others that it becomes a social problem. And anger (usually at the root of violent behavior) is very much a human emotion, but it is the act of violence that gives anger a bad name. I believe if people learned how to deal with their anger in constructive and creative ways, acts of violence would decrease. Is everybody teachable on this one?

I remember something from a psychology class in college about moral standards or levels. I think it said that we first learn to follow societies laws because we fear punishment. Then we follow the laws because they tell us what is right and wrong. And finally some of us reach a higher moral standard and know what is truly right or wrong based on fundamental human rights. Some people never reach this higher standard of moral thinking????????

Too many laws against parents regardinjg the care & upbringing of their children for one. The children these days know if they are touched or even talked to in a negative manner, they have too many ears that will listen and stop the parents from raising them correctly should they steer wrong. The music has become more violent in both words & actions, the urban areas often create a bad example & attract curious/rebellious young minds, and the media leans more towards sensationalism and "blood & gore" rather than educating our children at a young age liked TV used to; Instead of imitating current news events, they could be exposed to more positive morning programming than seeing multiple murders, major dope busts with "new" ways of getting high, domestic violence and so much other trash that they really don't need to see at such a young age.

Besides the terrible music out there, how about movies like "gettin rich or die tryin"? I wonder what this is doing to todays youth. I think we need more movies like "Heartbreak Ridge".

With all the theories on crime I learned many years ago in school that only one theory has been consistant thru time. Of people in prison the vast majority never ate dinner as a family!
Of all things?

its hard to asnwer all of these in one post

so this time i will take on the gret society.

Well it was LBJ who gave us this great idea to give away money for nothing, and because of this many in the big cities got their chicks for free ( sorry about the pun)

The great society (welfare) did nothing to rid this nation of poverty. Funny I have some US history books dated late 60's and one from the early 70's and they seem to say the samethings back then as you hear today.

The welfare state did 2 things that has increased crime.

1) it destroyed the family unit

2) created generations that will forever be locked into poverity

Each of these has incresed the crime levels in this country.

access to guns

this is the end result of a society that will let anything go.

Guns have been a part of this nation since day one. I had one as young kid and my best friend had a .22 rifle on a rack in his room, never did anyone think of taking it to school to kill someone.

Guns were very easy to get prior to 1968 all you needed was an address and the cash and you could mail order from anywhere.

Did we see the killings in the schools and on the streets then?

the school shooting like i have posted on have a common demominator. drugs given to them for any mental issue.

now to sum it all up in one easy line

LIBERALSIM IS A MENTAL ILLNESS THAT IS KILLING OUR KIDS AND COUNTRY!

Like colt I think there is to much here for one post so I'll set on two items you spoke of. One is the media, because of the ease of information and the trend to sensationalize the wrongs and play down the good society has literally flooded us with grisly articles daily. TV news is worse. The only thing that troubles me with this is that the media goes with the ratings. Like gawkers at a car accident humans are drawn to blood. The second is drugs.Today's drugs are more refined like meth and crack. They are cheap and both crank the user up and tend he or she towards violence. Yet on TV they are constantly pushing these energy fixes like it's better to do two days work in one. There are so many mixed messages that are sent to our kids constantly. This was a great post that could be debated for days.

Jax,

this post could be debated for years and it has been. So far it's just getting worse.

As long as medical profession and the drug industry keep cranking out new mind altering pills(when we know less about the workings of the mind then we do space) we will on see more problems.

AS far as crime there has, is, and always will be evil amoung us.

I agree 100% with your opinion Colt about how the drug companies are making so many pills to treat hundreds of so-called "ailments"; These pills seem to have worse side effects then what they are made to help, are extrememly expensive and pushed through the ebtire media chain to make giant profits for these new "drug lords". It almost seems like a mass doping made legal. Myself I only take my prescription pain meds when I can no longer tolerate it because I can't afford to be doped up with all the responsibilities I have these days. BTW, I hate that too when I get ready to hit the post button and see a typo when it's too late! LOL.

Here is something that shocked me a little bit today. While walking through my university library I caught glimplse into a young womans purse, which was large and sitting next to her wide open. I did a double take when I saw it was littered with prescription bottles. I can only imagine what the hell that was all about? How desensitized are people when they can be so casual about a purse full of drugs?

If you want to cut down on crime, arm law abiding citizens so that they are no longer victims of the criminal element but can as free men and women in a free society defend their right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There is a very valid reason for the individual's right to bear arms.

Ironic that drugs can lead to crime , so they try to make other drugs that may prevent it ?
