Michigan's attorney general says he's bringing assault charges against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick after the mayor had a physical confrontation with a detective trying to deliver a subpoena.

The mayor faces two counts of assaulting or obstructing a police officer in the furtherance of their duties. Each felony count brings up to 2 years in prison or a fine of $2,000.

Attorney General Mike Cox made the announcement on Friday. He also stated that he sees no reason why this case shouldn't be brought to trial within 90 days.

What do you think?

1. Is Cox making the right decision?
2. Do you see this trial taking place within the 90-day period?

Sound Off your thoughts here.

The way I see it yes it is the right choice, and when the trial happens does not matter because the governer is staying away from this like the plague. So if this felony sticks from what the city council said a couple of weeks ago the mayor would have to give up his office.
On top of that we have a whole lot of day left.
The bad thing that I do see is I feel for the good of Detroit and the state of Michigan our governer should have handled this personally but obviously we the people don't count.

Over the past few months it has been frustrating with the attention to Kwame's actions but I supported him as Mayor. That is OVER! He has to go and if the Governor expects my support (like she cares if she has it) in the future she needs to act NOW and not wait until September 3. When his arrogance, disrespect for the courts and shananigans are getting more INTERNATIONAL media attention than the PGA Tour that is right here in Michigan, then it is time to get rid of him. He has been embarassing Detroit as well as his wife and family but now he is adding to Michigan's state problems. Michigan has enough with the faltering auto industries, housing market and explosive unemployment. Michgan does not need Kwame Kilpatrick adding slime to the state. He is now outside of Detroit in his damage and Governor Granholm needs to act now. If he had any true love for Detroit (as he claims to) he would be man enough to step down just to keep from hurting the city any further. But he keeps hurting his wife and family so why should the city expect any more from him. Please Governor, do not wait until Sept 3! Stop this maniac now!

The king of Detroit is being dethroned. Is it arrogance or lake of common sence? Arrogance causes a lack of common sence. He thinks he is the law, he's been getting away with so much for so long he just figures he can do whatever he wants and he'll get away with it. I hope they don't slap his wrist with a 2,000.00 fine I hope they send his behind to jail. Also, is it true if he is in office until December the city pays his benefits for life? If that is the case I hope this gets done before 90 days. This whole thing is rediculous.

50,000 cash bond. Where do you think he'll get it? I am sure he does have it but if he's found guilty he'll never get it back.

Well, I think the sheriffs department should consider putting in a "Kwame" Entrance! seems like he is just going back and forth! Cant the governor put him on a leave for Mental reasons? apparently he has really lost it, just listen to his statement before the court yesterday! Lets hope with the new charges they remand him again!

I say yes to both questions too. The D.A. seems to want a speedy trial and it is a simple issue like he said. No DNA or thousands of Text messages. Just some people on a porch.

Maybe People of southwest detroit need to come together and march on Lansing, and Protest that the governor does something NOW rather than later. Because who knows what else this man is going to do next! this needs to end.

Yes! The A.G. is doing the right thing. Kwame is a thug who needs to be dealt with. It is about time K.K. pays for all of the crimes he has committed, he also needs to make a mature decision by resigning as Mayor.

Yes and hopefully! If my husband had "Escorted a sherrif's deputy off the property gently" like the Mayor did, my husband would still be in jail....charges would have been filed then and there!

Again I say Governor Granholm needs to act now and not wait until Sept 3.

Yes to both. I am glad that K.K. is finally paying for all that he has done against the city of Detroit & the citizens as well.

I think that the Attorney General made the right decision. How many times can we sit back and continue to watch him make a joke of Detroit, the state of Michigan and we as the people. Governor Granholm it is time to step up and take action. Can we wait until Sept. 3rd or should we just continue to allow him to run the city from JAIL?? We are the laughing stock of the nation at this moment.

I was in Canada last weekend the joke is the mayor of Detroit. We are the laughing stock of the nation, how much more should he get away with. I feel sorry for his children and his wife, the mayor should step down or take a medical leave for his mental problems, he thinks he is above the law, time for him take a break get his legal problems behind him and find a new career. I won't visit Detroit he has in the pass blamed us white focks for his problems and will not visit his city till he is gone.

Assaulting two Deputy Sheriff's while free on bond? Does that not violate the terms of his bond? The Deputies not effectuating an arrest because as AG Mike Cox stated they feared a brawl with the Mayor's EPU? A brawl between the Wayne County Sheriff's Department and the Detroit Police EPU? How perfectly Detroit. What was wrong with the radio or the cell phone? Why didn't the Deputies call for backup and make that arrest. The Wayne County Sheriff's Department intimidated by the Detroit Police EPU of Kwame Kilpatrick. What next the Michigan State Police run off by the The Michigan Humane Society? Only in Detroit. So sad.

AG Mike Cox stated that he contacted Attorney's for the Defendant prior to his news conference. The attorneys had knowledge of the new charges while appearing in front of Judge Jackson and said nothing even after the Judge alluded to the pending AG news conference. Enough already! If this was you or I we would be jailed pending Trial.

Detroiters should demand full disclosure on the origins of the additional bond money.

So many have left the City of Detroit. Must we now leave the State of Michigan to find some normalcy Madam Governor? You’re in charge so take charge.

Ms. Beaty please stand-up, get your immunity and be a better person than all those mentioned above. Testify against this joke of a man. He used you. OK. It could happen to any of us man and woman alike. No one will hold it against you if you do the right thing now. There is no glory in going down with the ship when you can save it. I'll bet you'de even be given hero status.

WAY, WAY BACK WHEN THE FIRST DIRT WAS UNCOVERED FROM KWAME'S FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD ETC. INDESCRECTIONS, THE PEOPLE HAD HAD ENOUGH!!!!! I HOPE THIS TIME HE GETS BURRIED UP TO HIS NECK WITH THE SAME DIRT THAT COVERS ALL THE THUGS THAT GET CAUGHT STEALING FROM OTHERS. HOWEVER, I HAVE MY SUSPICIONS THAT THE MINDSET OF DETROITS VOTERS WILL HAVE HIM BACK IN OFFICE IN THE NEXT TERM. HOW SAD, AS THE CITY WHICH WAS ONCE VIBRANT, CRUMBLES.
