LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A new report warns that many Michigan roads and bridges will keep deteriorating and become less safe unless the state doubles what it spends on them.

So, take away the tax implications and think to yourself -- If you had the money to complete one road project in the state, where would it be?

When I lived there all the Mile Roads were in bad shape. LOL, good luck trying to pay for it!! You have the right person in office for it, gives her the opportunity to raise your taxes again. The story I read this morning probably ties in with your Sound_off, Congress, the one with an approval rating of almost 10%, is going to raise taxes on a gallon of gas by .10 cents. In the time of need, leave it to the Democrats to raise your taxes again and people don't even get it!! Amazing!!

Do you mean where wouldn't it be? Like widening shoulders, that we don't drive on? Or replacing miles perfectly good guard rail?
Or adding more guard rail to 50 year old roads?
Maybe start by hiring companies that do good work. Look at I-69 by Davison, ---New road, so rough they had to diamond mill the surface, to get rid of the roller coaster effect.

just maybe if they had not used inferior materials to make the road in the first place we would not be in this place where all the roads are falling apart and if they had fixed the roads as the need instead of waiting until they are so far gone they would not have to raise taxes maybe they should take the money out of their pockets and not ours they get way too much money just to sit on their butts and take way to many days off or vacations.I have been on many roads out side of the state and their roads are beter than ours.

I belive that with all the ROAD USE Taxes that every trucking co. and owner/operators , both mich. and all other states pay ,along with all the taxes we pay for roads ,oh! yes the money the government gives us , there is no reason why we should have any bad roads at all, they all should be as smooth as glass. or is it they are paying way tooo ! much for inferior workmanship, inflated material cost,or maybe the money is being wasted somewhere else ???makes you wonder doesn't it ??

I agree about the inferior products used. it seems the same roads are always under construction. I-94 was under contruction in the same area for years. as far as the gas increase i believe its time the state government needs to take a pay decrease to help cover this. any rep or senator making 75-100,00-10% decrease and the ones making over 100,00$ 15-20% decrease in pay.this goes for the entire country. rick wagoneer (gm) took a 2 million$ decrease (BIG WHOOP) considering he makes 16 million a year.stop hitting us for there overspending and carelessness.

The road that leads straight to Governor Granholm is the road I would pave so that way we could go there quickly and kick he a$$. This crap I realize has been going on for years and I am tired of it. As soon as you drive into Ohio you can totally tell you left our state because the roads are so much better. Get with it Michigan Government stop wasting our taxes and fix it for crying out loud, you people suck!!!

Well if we went back to old technology when the Davison freeway was built we would be in better shape. They actually flooded the freeway for the cement to set properly. It lasted 26 years!!!!!
When you visit other states & there are barrels up, you actually see workers-working on the roads.

'unless the state doubles what it spends on them.'

I have a better Idea! What purpose are the Prisoners in our Jails serving? Other than being fed three times a day, phone privileges, internet privileges, T.V. privileges, exercise privileges and what ever else they have privileges for. I say BRING BACK THE CHAIN GANGS. I don't give a damn who protests. Don't like it, TOUGH!

Why should the state feed these worthless people who decided their own fate. CRIME
MAKE THEM WORK. MAKE THEM EARN THEIR FOOD. Let them work on the roads and anything else that the state is lacking in funds for. If they Refuse to work, Refuse to feed them. It is not unusual & cruel punishment to make these people work. Maybe after the job & task they're given is finished, they will have thought better of themselves. Even to the point of knowing that they can indeed accomplish something positive in life. And change completely for the good. If not, well let them continue a life in being a permanent prisoner who'll have to work for their keep whether they like it or not.

The only bad side to letting the prisoners do the work on the roads is-
They will put more people out of work in MI & still live better!! Hell they don't even have to pay for cable & will probably be able to buy converter boxes for their TV's that most of US can't afford.

Hey- I know I got off the roads but why doesn't MI export their prisoners for $$ to work on the roads. It seems to work for the BIG3!!

With the ginormous gas tax we pay at the pump for road work, maybe Jen can tell us where that $$ is going to.

They won't put anybody out of work if the State doesn't have the funds to hire anybody else to fix them. That was my point. Let these Prisoner's work for their food. If the State can't afford to have roads fixed, let prisoners fix them, under a Supervisor guiding them. Kills two birds with one stone. These people should not be just given a easy way. Just being in Prison is not punishment enough as far as I'm concerned. Maybe if they know they'll have to work all the time they're in Prison. Once they're out, they'll give some thought to not committing new crimes to return.
If too stupid, book them, convict them and WORK THEM AGAIN!

Actually it would be a cumulative project on select roads going north-south & east-west; I would modify roads like Van BLEEP, where I would extend the freeway to I-696 for one. The same for Hall Road from Van BLEEP east. With less stop time & regulated speeds, gas & time savings alone would pay for these projects. The traffic jams on I-75 & I-696 could be alleviated by adding additional freeways.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, The #1 road project in Michigan SHOULD BE the widening of US-23 from 2 to 3 lanes in each direction (north/south) from I-96 in Brighton to the M-14 interchange on the north edge of Ann Arbor. This project is more than 10 years overdue, due to "lack of funds", as southbound 23 is a parking lot every morning, and northbound crawls every afternoon. It's a BAD joke, that this project is soooo many years behind.
On the other hand, I-75 has been 4 lanes in each direction from north of Flint to north of Birch Run for many years, and is quite empty many days, except for holiday weekends.
Somebody at MDOT has NOT had their priorities straight for MANY years now.
WAKE UP!!!

Plank Road in Monroe County--between Yensch and Sanford Roads! We have had 2 blown out tires--including needing new rims on our new car--not to mention how many close calls we have had when trying to miss the many, many 'craters'. This is a popular road between Milan and Monroe--quit doing 'rinky-dink' fixits and get it done proper before there is a serious accident!

I'll pay for the road that brings Jenny back to Canada , where she belongs . The cost is no object , as long as she can't destroy another state in America ! Because that is exactly what the Democrat machine will do with her .
