If you're a retired GM employee 65 and over, we want to hear from you. How will these cuts affect your life? Let us know, we would like to tell your story and share your thoughts on the air.

GM's plans further salaried headcount reductions in the U.S. and Canada in the 2008 calendar year, which will be achieved through normal attrition, early retirements, mutual separation programs and other separation tools. In addition, health care coverage for U.S. salaried retirees over 65 will be eliminated, effective January 1, 2009. Affected retirees and surviving spouses will receive a pension increase from GM's over funded U.S. salaried plan to help offset costs of Medicare and supplemental coverage. And there will be no new base compensation increases for U.S. and Canadian salaried employees for the remainder of 2008 and 2009.

Again -- If you're a retired GM employee 65 and over, we want to hear from you. How will these cuts affect your life? Let us know, we would like to tell your story and share your thoughts on the air.  You can also call 248-552-5117 to leave a voice mail.

My husband is retired from GM my son just took the buy out. I feel sorry for the one's that have big familys what are they going to do. I don't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing for my son to take the buy out even though his wife is working now a days it takes two to make ends meet.

They expect us to believe that there was no way to predict high oil prices? Who believes that? They should have started working on hybrid and hydrogen vehicles years ago. Fifty years ago, the Japanese auto companies looked at what the Big Three were doing and improved upon it. It's about time Ford, GM, and Chrysler look to the east and learn a few lessons. Sure Toyota and Honda make what people want, but they also make what people need. Small, practical, fuel efficient cars. It's that simple. And isn't it funny that scooters are made by Japanese (and European) companies? Scooters easily get 60 mpg and are gaining in popularity. Where are you on this Big Three? GM is run by idiots. They couldn't come up with a good idea to save their own lives, let alone those of their employees.

The other side of this story is how executives have robbed GM. Starting with Roger Smith, who more than doubled his pension, executives have received enormous pay and bonuses for non-performance and non-responsibility for their decisions -- neopotism was the rule of the day -- no experience was necessary for the executives who ran the company. It looks like they are going to get away with it!

Those guys at GM are idiots. They will make Michigan go Down,Down,Down, and Down. They will never make good cars until the day they die.

Oh quite your complaining big 3. It is your own dam fault your in this position. Gee what would you expect would happen when you have a bunch of crooks at the top stuffing their pockets with millions and a bunch of drunken, drug addicted and over paid UAW worker trying to build cars. I wonder if the Japanese go out to the bar for lunch and never come back to work coming in the next day still drunk. Get rid of the BLEEP at the top and the UAW and you might survive

No creativity. GM's turn around is BS and the existing executive team designing these solutions is a joke. It's the traditional bean counters at work with no creative thinking. Why haven't they come out and demonstrated a new way of working, building and designing cars and an innovative sustainable plan? From what I see, General Motors continues to screw its retirees and existing employees. Why would anyone want to work for this company? Workers were promised retiree benefits that included a pension and healthcare. Both have gotten either substantially cut or eliminated all together. This demonstrates they have no values. If they don't have values for their employees, how can they have values for the environment? They also mention no raises in 2009. If you're a young employee you should consider leaving now since you can still make something out of your career and you won't get a bump in pay in 2009. Why screw the employees and not do the hard things that can really show sustainable results? Come on GM, get creative! Eliminate your workers that aren't productive. You have a lot of slackers and non performers that should be fired before cutting into benefits of those people who once made you successful. If the GM board of directors was smart, they'd can the entire executive team. Look for downgrades from brokers and credit raters that will make it even more costly for them. People should comment on every blog out there about this BS plan. caveman

The employees at Gm,Ford, and Chrylsler have no one to blame but themselves. They have been over paid for years now. Most of the line workers make in excess of $60,000 per year. With some crazy amount of paid vacations and paid personal days. Not to mention paid shutdown(change over). Dont forget the other fringe benefits. None of this is the fault of The Bush administration. Americans need to learn to live within there means. Rapper E-40 said it best "You dont buy an $85,000 car before you buy a house" And I say "You dont buy a $300,000 house or 2 jet skies if you cant afford the payment"
Do you know why products at Wal-mart are so cheap? because they only pay the employees $8.00 an hour.
Do you know why cars are so expensive? Because the U.A.W members thought it necessary to make $28.00 an hour. Double time after 40 and on weekends. Triple time on holidays.
If you cant make ends meet on that, its you own fault.
All of the big three need to restructure. Not just G.M. get rid of the babies. And hire people who dont mind to work.
HEY, YOU WERE THINKING IT.I SAID IT.

As retiree’s who have worked several years of our lives to help GM become a great company, this is how we get rewarded by having our Health Care taken away from us. There are other ways to save money that would gain the respect of all employees.
? First take away the cars from Company Drivers. This will save GM money on car insurance, gas, car washes and would stimulate car sales now that there would be no company drivers.
? Second eliminate some of the Executive Positions because when I retired 2 years ago GM had 184 Presidents and Vice Presidents. Why so many?
? Third any Executive who is making over $500,000 per yr. should take a 30 to 50% pay cut to show they are serious about restoring GM as a successful Automotive Company.
? Fourth eliminate the Corporate Aircrafts, the Pilots, Flight Crews and Mechanics and let the Executives travel like everyone else.
? Fifth eliminate the Executive Chauffer's. Why are chauffeurs needed?
? 6th Fire Wagoner because since he has taken over GM we have lost market share....which means he isn't doing his job. If I didn't do my job when I was working I would have been fired. Gm did not give Bob Stemple a fair chance and he was fired after 6 months.
GM needs to clean house starting with the Top Executives before they take away benefits from their retired and active employees especially the salaried employees because over the years we have sacrificed so much and have had several benefits taken away from us.
The Board of Directors need to look at the Big Picture and ask themselves do we have the right people running this organ

Let's face it. For years the workers were overpaid. It's not popular to say, but it's the truth. The UAW union is as much to blame as anyone.
As for not buying American, you do understand that most of these vechicles are being built here in America, by Americans; don't you?

I think it's ironic that the retirees health care is cut, when this current generation of retirees worked for GM (and Ford and Chrysler for that matter), they worked to help make the company(ies) successful, most devoted their adult lives to long term careers (both blue and white collar). Then, then money is mismanaged at the top, granted the economy is bad, the cut is made to those who made the company successful. Maybe cut things like company cars, large expense accounts, large bonus payments to CEOs, etc.

To mikme,
G.M. had no choice but to pay the union people what they wanted, Thats what unions are for. G.M. did that so the company could stay in business. It was only a matter of time before it all crumbled.
I do agree with RayJay58. Lets not punish just the line workers. start at the top and work down. Too much money is being spent on unnecessary crap.

These responses make me wonder just how many of you actually know what you're talking about?
How many of you either have or are currently employed by GM?
I am and from your responses I get the feeling that they are nothing more than opinions based on half truths and what you have read in the paper.

Hey Blindone,
It sounds to me like you maybe need to educate yourself on this. There are no half truths. Everyone at G.M., Chrysler, and Ford are now and have always been overpaid. If you cant put some extra money aside every week to save for your retirement thats your fault. Than the employees want to get mad when the company wants to cut some of there pension. It sounds to me like you should have saved some of that $60,000+ per year for your retirement.

This is for jimij007 - my father worked for Ford for 40 years, supported a family of 6 as a skilled trade person, bringing home about 60+ working 7 days a week, he retired in 1999 and has a pension no where near 60K, so maybe you need to do some research. Granted some positions at the top are overpaid, the the average employee is not.

jimij007
Jul 17, 2008 | 11:44 PM

Hey CMP64,
If you dad worked for Fords in skilled trades working 7 days a week with a union and only brought home 60k he was getting screwed. Do the math. The average line man at G.M. makes about $28.00x40hrs=$1120.00 per week
$1120.00x52weeks=$58,240.00 per year.
Thats just straight time.So yes the are all overpaid.
I never said anything about the pensions being 60k. What I said was "It sounds to me like you should have saved some of that $60,000+ per year for your retirement" So maybe you need to read things properly before you start misquoting people.
