Could lower freeway speed limits be on the horizon in Michigan?

Governor Granholm hinted to reporters yesterday that lowering speed limits in order to conserve fuel might be something she would consider.

What do you think?
Can you drive 55?

I think lowering the speed saves lives but it can sure anger people trying to get to work.

I remember when they did this in the 70's. It was stupid then and it is stupid now. People need the option to travel quicker.

I have slowed down on my way to work and I have seen allot of people slow down also. I do use the increased speed if I am running late. Slowing down does help with the fuel consumption. I have noticed it and I set my cruise at 65 m.p.h. My hour commute is still only an hour.

The reason Jenny would like to mandate this is because MI would receive federal funds which we do not get because we increased the speed to 70.

Yes, 55 is a great way to save gas! I have reduced my freeway driving speed from 70 to 55 mph. This reduction has increased my gas mileage from 27mpg at 70mph to 34mpg at 55mph. This is a 30% increase in gas mileage. To offset the slower driving speed I allow an added 5 to 10 minutes to my commute times.

I believe this is the craziest idea I've heard in a long time. Some of us have to travel long distances in the state for a living, and my time is worth more that the cost of gas. For example, traveling from Ferndale to Saginaw, which I do a couple of times a week, would probably add an additional 45 minutes to my travel time one way. This would greatly affect my time on the road, I wouldn't be able to see as many customers in a day and this would seriously affect my income. Not worth it at all.

I could drive 55 to save fuel right now without changing the speed limit. But I have a feeling that the State wants more of our money and wants an excuse to pull more people over and charge for speeding. I say - leave the speed limit as is and let people slow down to 55 if they wish to save fuel. There are many other ways to save fuel. Think again Granholm - your idea to reduce the speed limits to save fuel is ridiculous. I find it very hard to accept that we are paying you for ideas like this.

We need to eliminate the 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 mile lights, Go to flashing lights when school is out since there is no one walking to school. The stop and go city driving is what really counts on fuel mileage. I get better mileage driving 70 with a 4speed automatic trans and what ever final gear ratio I have. 55 MPH is between gears and the transmission is always searching for the correct gear, Not very efficient !

I usually drive between 55 and 60 mph on the freeway as it does save gas but those drivers who feel they have to drive 15 to 20 over the limit make it a little risky sometimes. I stay in the right lane but invariably someone will tailgate a few feet behind even though there are two or three other lanes to drive in. But I've noticed those same drivers who don't believe traffic laws apply to them commit other violations and speed on all roads, not just freeways. Lowering the speed limit on freeways will not change the driving habits of those who do not obey the higher speed limits now.

I'm sure that Governor Granholm just sees this as another way to increase revenues through speeding fines. I see it as just one more reason to move out of Michigan.

I think she should just leave things the heck alone. She has screwed up enough things in this state.

Its not the governments business how much I spend on gas.

If I want to lower my speed to save gas that's my business. NOT HERS!!!!

I drive between 55-60 anyways, but the ones I notice that are speeding (over 70) are the suvs and pick up trucks and semi drivers. they are the guilty ones as far as reckless driving, I don't know if dropping the limit down will help because people are always in a hurry and do what they want to anyway. I just laugh when I catch up to them and they are on the side of the road with the blue and red lighters.

If you lower the speed limit then you would have to take away the drivers license and cars of the jackazzes who seem to think that they either have to go 20 miles over the limit or the jackazzes that seem to think they have to go 20 miles under and those are the ones that do not have a license anyway that's why they drive so slow they do not want to get caught but that does not matter the cops and the state will not do anything anyways.thats why we have so many people that do not have car insurance until they need to get their plate for the car.

there should be some kind of way that you can tell how long that they have had car insurance on the car and or if you are a first time driver and that's why you never had insurance in your name if you keep on get insurance just to get your plate and then drop it you should not be able to get the plate or it should cost you 4 time the amount and than maybe if they have to pay more every time they will keep insurance on their car.the rest of us can keep it why can't they?they just do not care and do not want to pay for insurance that's why it is so expensive for the rest of us that have it all year long.

I TRIED AN EXPERIMENT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY , YOUR TACHOMETER MEASURES THE SPEED OF THE ENGINE IN R.P.M OR (REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE) FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT AUTO MECHANICS , I DROVE 70 MPH AND THE RMP WAS 2800 RPM ON THE TACHOMETER THEN I SLOWED DOWN AND THE TACH READ 1800 RPM SO YOU HAVE TO BE SAVING GAS BECAUSE THE ENGINE SPEED WAS 1000 RMP SLOWER . THE RPM MAY BE DIFFERENT ON YOUR CARS DEPENDING IF YOUR TRANSMISSION IS A 3 OR 4 SPEED AUTOMATIC OR A 5 OR 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANS OR REAR AXLE GEAR ON REAR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES , MINE IS A 4 SPEED AUTO , SO SLOWER ENGINE SPEED , BETTER GAS MILEAGE . TRY IT FOR YOURSELVES , IF YOUR CAR HAS A TACH

Lowering the speed limit would save gas but cause a longer drive to work, so does the savings in gas equal the time lost at a lower speed? Also, maybe the Big 3 plants could each start at say 6, 7 and 8 am to have a lower volumn of traffic on the roads & highways at the same time. Other companies could stagger their starting times and we would see alot less congestion and better fuel economy to boot.

Wow, Governor Jenny is really earning her keep with this one! LOL!

The state of Michigan is in economic distress, home foreclosures are high, unemployment is high, people are leaving the state in droves.

We turn to our esteemed Governor. "Please help us, Madam Governor! How can we return prosperity to the great State of Michigan?"

She replies...

"Drive 55"

Now, wisdom like THAT was definitely WORTH her re-election, wasn't it? Nice job, voters!

GOOD POINT CAR , I WORK ON 2ND SHIFT AND ALLOT OF THE STOP LIGHTS IN AREAS LIKE BY OAKLAND MALL FOR EXAMPLE COULD BE SET TO BE BLINKING YELLOW AFTER 9:00 PM WHEN THE MALL CLOSES , IT TICKS ME OFF TO HAVE TO STOP FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BECAUSE NOBODIES COMING OUT OF THE MALL AND ITS NOT JUST THERE , ANY NON ESSENTIAL LOW VOLUME STREETS SHOULD BE BLINKING YELLOW WHEN APPLICABLE SO THERE'S NO NEEDLESS STOP AND GO WHICH IS A WASTE OF GAS , ALSO ALL THE IDIOT DRIVERS ON THE HIGHWAY THAT CANT SEEM TO MAINTAIN A CONSTANT SPEED WHICH IS ALWAYS A WASTE OF GAS , SOME DRIVERS WILL BE GOING 70 + MPH THEN SLOW DOWN TO 55 MPH AND BACK TO 70 BECAUSE THERE PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO THERE GADGETS THEN DRIVING
