WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

I DON'T KNOW WHY IT HAD TO GO AS FAR AS IT DID , I THINK ANYONE THAT FIT THE CRITERIA SHOULD BE ABLE KEEP A LOADED PISTOL ON THEM WITH LESS RESTRICTIONS ON WHERE YOU CAN OR CANNOT LIKE COLLAGE CAMPUSES , I PERSONALLY CALL A GUN FREE ZONE A DEAD ZONE THAT ANY CRIMINAL KNOWS ANY CCW HOLDER WILL BE UNARMED , JUST LIKE SHEEP TO A SLAUGHTER , FURTHERMORE EVERYTIME I HAVE TO GO TO A GUN FREE ZONE IT RUNS THE RISK THAT IF MY VEHICLE GETS BROKE INTO THEN THERE'S JUST ANOTHER LEGAL PISTOL THAT WILL BE USED FOR A ILLEGAL PURPOSES , IN MY OPINION FOR ALL CCW HOLDERS THAT THE SAFEST PLACE FOR THE PISTOL TO BE IS ON THE LICENSE HOLDER

The laws need to be relaxed even more to put more competent CCW's into the mainstream. It's a shame that as well as our justice system seems to work, the criminals have more rights than the victims. I agree that if a person fits the proper criteria they should be allowed to carry & as long as efficient background checks show they will not be using their weapon without common sense. The man that foiled the bank robbery is a perfect example of what proper gun ownership can do for any given community. Being shot in the act will send a much better statement to those who think they can take/touch what is not theirs, especially if the system is either too over-crowded & too lenient.

car I must agree with your statement
we have the right to protect ourselves and the criminals will be able to get guns regardless of the law. Cocaine is against the law but it seams to be in abondance across the nation. I said that to prove my point. if law biding citizens cant protect themselves then the underworld will take over

Well what is that going to solve?

When is this country or the people leading this world going to realize stupid people and real dumb ideas with guns get people killed of all ages and races on purpose and by accident.

We are our own terrorist SOMEBODY PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!!!
My daughter was just 6 years old when 12 jurors set the killer free who killed her father, because he said he thought that her father was going to kill his brother later in the testimony by the killer's girlfriend and others he bragged about how he killed him and yes his brother was my daughter's god father,
so much for friends huh? anybody can get a gun anywhere at anytime so much for law passing crap!!!

YEAH BUT I CAN LEGALLY CARRY MY GUN TO PROTECT MYSELF , THE WAY I HANDLE FIREARMS IN MY HOUSE IS I CARRY ONE ON ME LOADED AND THE OTHER UNLOADED PISTOLS GO INTO A LOCKED SAFE ,YOU SEE ITS THE IDIOTS THAT GET A PERMIT TO JUST HAVE A PISTOL IN THERE HOME THAT LEAVE IT LAYING AROUND LOADED SO SOME INNOCENT KID GETS KILLED , SOME PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HAVE GUNS INCLUDING SOME OF THE MO MO'S I HAD IN MY CCW CLASS , THOSE PEOPLE ARE A REAL PIECE OF WORK , , OTHER PEOPLE WILL GET INTO AN ARGUMENT AND SETTLE IT WITH GUNS INSTEAD OF TALK OR JUST WALKING AWAY

I don't think there should be a list of who even owns guns. If there is a list someone can come get them in an overthrow of "our" country.

This is a constitutional right of the people. If Liberals take office we will never see our ights again. Does anyone remember the crappy movie Demolition Man where people were fined for anything deemed bad for them. Then you had the people underground who looked to have a horrible life stealing food but yet they were free! I would go live underground in a minute to keep my rights!

We, as a nation that is governed by the Constituion, freely have the rights to bear arms as the Supreme Court ruled. Due to a circumstance years ago, I was given a CCW and I carried it on my for years. At that time frame, you didn't have signs that stated "guns are not allowed in this building".

That's just the government allowing business's to enact their own civil laws against CCW's, but I've carried into alot of places so far, sign or no sign. We applied for a CCW to protect ourselves, not to remove our guns outside and hope we don't get killed in the inside........

WE HAVE THE RIGHTS TO BEAR ARMS.

MID I AGREE THAT SOME BUSINESSES MAKE THERE OWN GUN RULES IS B.S. , I WENT TO JARED'S JEWELRY AND THERE WAS A BIG SIGN ON THE DOOR ,NO HAND GUNS ALLOWED , SINCE MY GUN WAS CONCEALED I WENT IN ANYWAY , PISS ON THEM , LIKE IM GOING TO TRUST MY LIFE TO A RENT A COP , LOOK WHAT HAPPENED IN ALABAMA , A JEWELRY DOWN THERE WAS ROBBED AND SECURITY DID NADA , NOW WHEN I TOOK MY CCW CLASS I DON'T REMEMBER THEM TELLING ME I HAVE TO ABIDE BY PRIVATE STORE RULES , THERE WERE MANY GUN STORES LIKE TARGET SPORTS AND DOUBLE ACTION THAT USED TO HAVE A SIGN THAT MY CCW IS NOT HONORED HERE , THAT PRETTY HYPOCRITICAL OF THEM SINCE THEY ARE SO MUCH FOR GUN RIGHTS , BUT THOSE GUN STORES NOW ASH CANNED THAT RULE , THERE ARE STILL SOME RULES TO CARRYING A CONCEALED WEAPON IN THERE STORES BUT THAT'S A LEGITIMATE RULE
