The deadline for a state budget deal is Wednesday. That's when a month-long temporary budget extension runs out.

So what are state lawmakers doing to meet the deadline?

OFFICIALLY TAKING THE WEEKEND OFF !!

AP reports: A few lawmakers will continue working on
specific department level proposals over the weekend as the
Legislature work on a new spending plan. The Senate is to return to
session Monday. The House canceled today's (Friday) session and may
reconvene Monday.

What the H -E double hockey sticks is going on around here?!  Where's the sense of urgency?

What do you think?  Sound Off and be heard.  Some of your comments may be used on the air.   Let em rip folks.

I honestly see it as the same thing as last month, they will purposively wait until the 11th hour and then make it seem as if they have been working on the issues all night long. I honestly cannot believe they think the people of Michigan are that stupid and naive. What do they really want praise for doing their jobs a couple days out of the year. I can bet their are more people in this legislation that miss on votes then there are ones that actually do vote on issues.
No vote no pay.
5% paycuts across the board.
Part-time legislation.
Trips accounted for and not used as vacations.
Cut in all expense accounts.
80-90% Cutbacks in State vehicles.
These are just a few things that could be cut there are so many more, and then if this does not counter-act the deficit, then raise the taxes, the people would be willing to help if Lansing themselves did their part.

Sense of urgency? I've been asking this question for the past two weeks, and the answer would be.....there is no urgency when it comes to reducing spending and making cuts in Lansing.
Granholm practically held her breath and stomped her feet when the tax increase was in play! Now that the next phase was to be worked on, everyone seemed laid back and content. Citizens of this state should be outraged!!

Michigan--You saw Shutdown One, you saw Granholm hold the Legislature hostage, you saw the people suffer for her poor judgements.....Now comes SHUTDOWN 2!!!! See the Governor again hide from the people, see the Governor not hold the Legislature hostage because she already got her way, see the cuts in vital services!!!! Coming to the theater of Michigan real soon!!!!

This is just TAXING JENNY, and her new phase of tax increases.
Look for a tax hike on cigarettes, gas, sales tax raised from 6 percent to 8 percent, Property tax increase, State income tax raised, and probably a tax on beer and liquor.

This of course will not be enough, so in phase 3 of the great shutdown, look for food items to be taxed at the store, A new law for mobile homes to have to have current plates, even if they are sitting still because they have a title, drivers licenses to increase along with the price of plates, hunting and fishing licenses, and a new road usage tax, which will be enforced by telling the public that all fines for no inspection sticker will be given to local orphanages.

IS THERE ANYTHING I'M MISSING????????

The state couldn't borrow anymore money from the teacher's pension fund like what happened a few decades ago (without paying it back, I might add) so where else are they going to get the money? This is very taxing.

The difference between the Government & the Public:
#1-The Government needs money, get it from somewhere else, raise taxes. When we need money, get it for ourselves(no choice), work more hours.
#2-The government has a deadline, no worries, take the weekend off & see their families. When we have a deadline, everyone worries, work through the weekend & forget we have families.
#3-Redundant.
I believe @ one point in history the PUBLIC WAS THE GOVERNMENT! WHAT HAPPENED?

They all need to be booted out. Who do they think they are?
Recalls cost a lot of money, the only way to deal with them is not to re-elect them. Make a list and keep it and sweep them out at next election.
The gov has really screwed this state up. I hope that those who elected her (unions, deetroit, women, liberals) are happy. Do not complain, you did it..

Hey there mikef1, don't blame all women. She is a disgrace to those of us who think for ourselves.

I get a kick out of people slamming Governor Granholm while the Republican controlled Senate takes a three day weekend. The Republicans want another shut down so no matter what lame fool they put up next time you will vote for them. I think it's time the legislators stop playing political games and get back to work.

My observation, being very close to State Gov. is: Maybe they already struck a deal and chose to not vote on it and become public untill next week. This will give the lawmakers a 3 day weekend without their constituents bothering them all weekend.
(Budget cuts are going to generate a lot of fury from the public no matter where the cuts are made.)

Believe it or not, their job is 7 days a week and sometimes they need a break.

Now, I am not saying the above is true and if they haven't struck a deal, then shame on them.

I do know this is a political move lawmakers use to avoid questions untill they are ready for them.

Of course it is wrong for them to take a three-day weekend... this is their job! When they became state representatives, they knew what they were getting into. This job is not all three-day weekends, it's solving problems after the hole has been dug. Stop blaming Democrats or Republicans, because at this point it's both. What really needs to be done is people voicing their opinion publically, which is something that the people of Michigan are NOT doing. The state representatives are not taking their jobs seriously, and I am throughly dissapointed.

I agree with notstephencolbert. There is nobody to blame now. They knew about this deadline and they can't blame the governor now. It's those lazy representatives we got up in lansing. One thing is to cut expenses, especially auto expenses for all of lansing. If we need to loose some additional state patrols, that may be an option as well. This has gone on too long.

"Michigan Legislature is one of only eleven full-time state legislatures in the nation. Michigan's legislators receive a base salary of $79,650 per year which makes them the second-highest paid legislators in the nation."

Taking the weekend off durring a major buget battle, now that's what I call more bang for our buck's.

What is wrong with this picture, the state of Michigan is in a real bad budget crunch, and yet we the tax payers have the second highest paid legislature in the nation, and one of only eleven full time state legislatures in the country. I say make the legislature part time and cut their salary in half. Why do they need to be full time to make laws?

Jennifer Granholm is in the top job and captain of the ship. I'm certain she has the last say in Lansing's decisions, making her both accountable & responsible. The only difference is that many will sink in the ship with her. Being a woman really has no bearing on this issue, just as Engler was also accused of her bad judgements and business sense. A stupid brain is such, no matter what gender sits on it. LOL

That weekend off isn't bad enough. How about that $1,000 a plate dinner they were all attending last week? I sure hope THAT wasn't funded by "us" too!! Why would I even question that one. I certainly have my list ready as to who NOT to vote for in the next election.
