Here we go again!  The state Senate has voted in favor of a smoking ban.  While I don't smoke, I can't help but feel that a little more of our freedom is about to be snuffed out!

This is what really has me fuming!  Even as we work to clean up our air, the roads remain in disrepair.  Many streets now resemble Swiss cheese with drivers ducking and dodging potholes at every turn.  The problem has become so bad in Macomb County that I have devised a "pothole free" route to work.  Of course, it takes me off the beaten path at a time when gas prices are nearing $4.00 a gallon.

Furthermore, as our state's economy continues to struggle, this measure has the potential to further hurt small business.  I know some will say that restaurants are bars will not be adversely affected, but I disagree.  Minnesota's smoking ban has been so "successful" that dozens of bars are holding so-called "theater nights" as a workaround.

Lansing's time would be better spent solving real problems, such as our state's shrinking population and crumbling roads.  Stop picking on the poor smokers!

When you look at Michigan's weight limits you will find it's almost double that of the federal limits. Our roads simply can't handle the extra tonnage.

Tall,

I think Michigan has the highest weight limits in the country. But you're right

I`m not condoning anything, but look at the hard time the malls are having since they banned smoking on their premises awhile back. I used to go to them and they would be packed on the weekends - every weekend. Not anymore. It began right after their ban when online shopping wasn`t the rage it is now.

The Governor said she would sign a ban, but farts around about Michigan`s #1 source of pollutant air ----- Kwame Kilpatrick........hmmmmmm. lol

I don't smoke but I do believe that bar owners should be able to choose weather or not to have smoking.

If they want to help , they should ban Jenny first ! Then if they want to dictate what bar owners can and can't do , then they should have a tax free status . If the state is messing with their cash , the state should be held responsible for any income loss the owners run into .

As far as the roads go, if the state used contractors who used quality materials to build quality roads in the first place, we'd have fewer pot holes, less often.

What if the state contracted with companies that offer a guarantee with their work? If potholes appear within 5 years of new road construction, the contractor fixes the roads for free. Yeah, that'll happen.

As far as banning smoking on private property, the government should butt out. I have parents and don't need the government acting like them. Liberty means limited government involvement in personal lives, especially if what citizens want to do is legal. The last time I checked, smoking was legal.

AH HAH, so that is what it boils down to... ban the smokers from having a good time so that the non smokers can stay at the bar longer to get drunker, THEN to go out driving to kill school children.

You holier than thou nonsmoking liberal RETARDS who never served a day in uniform EARNING their RIGHTS as smokers want to turn this place into a communist state.

I have one question for you; what is the difference between a communist and a democrat? Answer: The spelling!

Take it from a smoker who spends THOUSANDS of dollars every year in restaurants what is going to happen to the states economy. What new liberal laws are they going to pass to protect your liberal cowering in fear of the agitated smoker who snaps and goes postal.

Cigarettes ARE HOMICIDE SUPPRESSION INHALERS! Don't mess with my medicine that keeps people like you alive! (just a figure of speech... kinda) :-)

SMOKING is a RIGHT! Not a privilege like... say driving.
Leave us smokers alone, second hand smoke STILL HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN, or has any one else noticed that smoking rates have gone WAY down over the past few decades yet still cancer rates have INCREASED, smoking is NOT to blame, we need to look at other possible causes like maybe PLASTIC, you laugh, but look at what usage has been on the rise since smoking rates have declined.
We have known for about a hundred years that oil causes cancer.
Look at what most of our daily dining ware is; both regular and disposable (fast food, junk food) have you ever noticed that when you pour cola into a plastic cup that there is an oily film floating

I think that small business owners should be able to decide for themselves.
