I like Harvey Levin a lot. He's smart and funny and hard working and helps old ladies across the street.. I don't however, like what he represents.. which is an increasingly intrusive 'gotcha' approach into any celeb or pseudo celeb or wanna be celeb who happens to be out to dinner or at the airport. I know he and the kids on his TMZ show and web site have 'fun ' with it and take a different , sarcastic approach ( which I actually love) but still..... enough..i mean.. who cares ???? ... can't Kanye West and his bodyguard/slash/manager get on a flight to Hawaii w/o cameras in their faces ? I know I know.. they wouldn't do it if there wasn't a demand for it.. the paparazzi have to make a living too..... and some ( airheads) like Paris and Britney and Kim seem to thrive on the ''attention' but enough is enough.... Having said that, by the same token, the celebs of the world are happy to come on all our news and semi-news TV programs to tout their latest movies and shows and have us fawn all over them and give them a fortune in free publicity.. that's OK for them.. cause it's on their terms... and they can sit in a studio somewhere with assistants bringing them lattes and cell phone msgs while they patiently answer the same inane questions over and over again via satellite for news teams from around the country ... ( so Mathew... did you have more fun making Surfer Dude or Tropic Thunder ..? . i really wanna know ! ) ...Yet a lot of these are the same celebs who object ( Mathew) to being photographed when they're out in public ...who don't want to be bothered.. who sometimes fight back.... who somehow draw a distinction between being a celebrity when they're ''on'' and being a 'regular person'' when they're at the beach ? i dont think so.... Yes.... they want it both ways.. maybe they'll get it that way someday... new laws ? new ''rules"" ... .. but not as long as we live in Harvey's world.

Check this out...my parents were visiting and I had on the morning channel 11 news on Thursday when my mom saw and heard Jillian say how she got it on with her husband on the couch the minute she saw Eva Mendes...

Unbelievable!

She could not believe this was the news in California.

Phil,

I'll be outright honest with you about TMZ: I absolutely HATE that show! It's one thing when celebrities do an interview on some show on their terms, if the media outlet offers it to them. I'm well aware of the magazine style of journalism that comes up with entertainment news in television and radio. It's another thing when someone comes at a famous person like a hungry shark, waiting to devour him or her by snapping pictures in a feeding frenzy.

Back in my college days, I did an interview with my high school classmate John Stamos for Cypress College's magazine class. I can recall how the teen magazines hounded him for interviews, and yet he took time out as an old trusted friend to do this interview. He was candid with me about the craziness of becoming well known on General Hospital. I learned about keeping my integrity as a journalist, and how it pays off in life. He really appreciated it when I showed the readers the John Stamos I knew when I grew up with him...he and I were 19 at the time. If I were applying for a job at TMZ, I'd be on their most hated photographers list, and not get hired! I just might be a bit too civil for TMZ.

Love your work Phil but you're being a mild hyprocit.

If you're on a police ride-along and you come across an attempted murder suspect, after he's been subdued, as a newsman, you will place a microphone and camera in his face and ask and all sorts of questions...harass him to the point where you'd love to get a confession.

The TMZ/Paps are doing something similar. They have created a news genre. Teenie bobbers young and old want to know what their favorite celeb is doing and also to get them to say/do something that his newsworthy (similar to getting a confession from a criminal). Same goes for all these upskirt shots you see of "new Hollywood" starlets. You have photographers who keep their fingers pressed on the shutter button until the batteries or flash dies (whichever comes first).

Whether young like it or not, we all want to see a train wreck (bad pun considering what recently occurred). But then again, FOX did spend the majority of Friday afternoon/evening covering a train wreck. Newsworthy indeed. But the media also went full tilt when Britney went 5150 to UCLA.

.. been in LA since '83... aside from the traffic and an occassional earthquake it's awesome.. why wouldn't you want to live here ? I have a great job.. the people here are fun... I get to do what we call ''long form'' stories, investigations, half hour specials.. we can really get into some serious issues here... ( no not Britney). Someday i hope to meet Jillian. Later.
