Before reading this post let me start off that I am more patriotic then most.  I try to buy American whenever possible, going to great lengths to see what is and is not American made and/or service.  I try not to shop at Stores like Wal-Mart, and try not to by AT&T products.  AT&T in fact is in my liar category as it is in my personal belief that they use the AT&T logo and branding to get Americans to purchase, yet contract many jobs overseas.  Which to me is kind of un-American.  Granted there are times when Americans are stuck up and pompous about it, but if I were a business owner, I would try to employ Americans first instead of just jumping ship to fill my pocket book.  That's another blog for another time!  I do certainly believe in Love it or Leave It very strongly.  However, like when you are looking for a job, you make comparisons, and sometimes take a job and hope for some things to change.  You might point out that Cuba is bad due to Communism, but, what about Mexico.  It is a free country and even more come to America from there.  Communism may not be the only cause.  Cuba was once free and still had people trying to get to America.

My question is, why are we so against everything Cuban just because it is Communist.

Certainly I agree that Cuban people are largely oppressed.  However a large portion of that may be caused by America's insistence that nobody trade with them.

I would just like to point out some of the things Cuba has that America does not.

Cuba has free education from kindergarten thru Doctorate.  In some cases their Doctorate programs are more rigorous than ours.

Free healthcare.  Granted like many free healthcare systems, there is almost no research for new medicine, and they rely on research in America for that.  After all why should they pay for it, when we will not only pay for it, but do the research for them.

Though corruption does exist, there is almost no crack cocaine or drug use (Marijuana excluded).

I also firmly believe that we have helped the Castro mafia stay in power. Often, when people hear something, they can only tell if it is true by getting the truthful information.  Since American's can't travel to Cuba, that means neither can our ideas.  In which case the idea of freedom will not flourish.  I firmly believe that one of the contributors to Russian democracy and the collapse of the Soviet empire was the many conferences between Russian Premiere's and our President(s).  I also believe that tourist groups, and other types of travel to Russia and other communist countries firmly allowed these countries to form in some cases a better form of democracy then our own.    Many of them (with our help) have free healthcare and education systems.  The very things we are asking our politicians to fix.  Yet year after year, the best we can hope for in education is a minor reduction in costs.

Senator Enzi, the Wyoming Republican who introduced a bill with bi-partisan support, told reporters: "If we want to give the Cuban people a taste of the real America, we need to allow Americans to go there and share it. Unilateral sanctions stop not just the flow of goods, but the flow of ideas – ideas of freedom and democracy are the keys to positive change in any nation."

I firmly believe that much of what Senator Enzi said is true.  If you look at the revolt in China many years ago, Russia and the Baltic countries, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republis.  Though not perfect, in many ways they have taken our idea of Democracy and improved on it from the start.  We may have invented the wheel, but they greased the axels.  I am not saying I want to live there.  (Though I do hear the weather in Cuba is quite nice), why not get the ideas going.  We may be missing an opportunity for change in Cuba by not allowing travel there.  The Cuban people are thinking about change right now.  We need to help encourage those thoughts.

What do you think?

First off , Cuba has had five decades of comunist indoctrination . In short , their people have been indoctrinated like the old world commies . They have improved on nothing . They have not greased any axle , exept for Castro's axle . Second , of they had a 1200 mile boarder with us , there would be no-one left exept Castro in Cuba . It would have taken about ten years for a total exodus . If you think that Castros brother is any different than he is , better think a bit more on that , because if he wasn't just like him , the throne wouldn't have been handed down to him . It would be more cost effective to just destroy the regime , and hand the country back over to the unions , err , I mean the mob , and let them have their whore houses back , so that they can deal with the problems of Cuba . We need another banana republic on our side like we need another hole in uor BLEEP . [ Which we may need if they keep figuring out more ways of taxing us ]

When cuba was taken over all American Companies lost all of their assets to the dictator and his new goverment. Many were left bankrupt and lost everyrhing they owned. The cuban goverment needs to make financial amends before we are to have anything to do with them!

1) just because one Castro is out does not mean anything will change. I am sure is brother is just as bad or worse then fidel

2) if the people wanted change don't you think by now they would have had a uprising

3) russia is far far from a democracy. I do not turst putin as far as i could toss his commie azz. you do not go to bed a commmie and wake up a freedom loving capitalist

4) china the revolt i think you mean was in 1989 when tens of thousands were slaughtered

5) free this and that. nothing is free! some one has to pay for it and the people of cuba pay for it in many ways including NO FREEdom.

you like many other liberals think there is some utopia, ahte to break it to you there is not.

so if we have free medical care then we can assume there will be no money for research, who will pick up the slack?

liberalism is a mental illenss that is killing our nation and our kids everyday!

Making Cuba an allie would give the Communist countries an easier stepping stone into America, not to mention the virtual flood of a new breed of illegals. Castro's influence will be carried on with or without US intervention, if I know my dictators.

Very good points, but in America we are taxed more than many other countries and then STILL have to pay for healthcare and college.
If you incorporate the cost of healthcare and college into the equation, we more than double the taxes. My issue is not that things will change, but now is the opportunity for us to get change to happen. Let the American people decide whether or not to go to Cuba. Let some of these right wingers take a vacation there and start a protest. Send Shehan over that to start harassing Raul and let's see how long he can take it. After all, they don't want to start a real war with us. The best way to make a regime collapse is from the inside out. The people of Cuba don't want change because they are brainwashed. Let's at least unbrainwash some by showing them American's at their best. Not the bitter we hate Cuba because it is communist type of attitude. Show them the gracious America that exists everywhere else in the world. We are more friendly to Arab countries that screw us on Oil prices and send their terrorists here then we are to the people of a country that may not even have a desire to harm us. Why should we give aid to countries that spur terrorism and not help the people of Cuba. Never the less, why not let people travel to Cuba. We are the only country in the world prohibiting travel there. I.E. I can fly to Toronto, and go to Cuba. Canadians vacation there all the time. Maybe that should be enough to spread democracy. Maybe not. I don't think Canadians are as outspoken as most Americans. The message of democracy is los

north where do you get your information from?

ever been to canada and see their tax rates?

france or the uk?

shehan is a lover of chavis who is best buddies with fidel.

you need to understand the world and issues before you post.

You cannot fly to canada and then to cuba you would be breaking our laws and face punishment.

I noticed how you did not address my points.

Morning all,
I think we need to leave things as they are and stay away from cuba. In the long run it will only cost the american taxpayers as does all these other countries that we send aid to.American's lose jobs everyday because company's move to china, mexico etc. for cheap labor or illigals come here and take employment from american's and now people want to open our doors to another country and a communist one? enough America need's to concentrate on Americans.

Question folks. You're so up in arms about Cuba because it's communist, right?

Then why are you buying stuff made in China without a second thought?
When you stop buying anything with the Made in China label, then I'll stop thinking of you as a hypocrite

I need to post some replies.
1) Colt, YOU ARE AN IDIOT, or maybe a JACK A$$, I can't decide which.
You can clearly travel to Cuba as long as you don't spend your own money there. You can spend your own money to get there as long as it doesn't directly go to the Cuban government in any direct way. In 2006 almost 40 Thousand Americans visited Cuba. Some by sail, but most by way of Canada and Mexico. Some Michiganders did get fined because they brought back items by way of Canada and explained that they bought them in Cuba, which violates the law. Visit the link below, I think it explains it best. Now this might be tough for you colt, because you need to be able to read to go to the link. Have Mommy Help You!

2) Patobello, you the man! Buy American! How many people visit China each year to see the great wall, go to Shanghai, etc. How many of us shop at China Mart, I mean Wal Mart?

Great Post there Michigan_Man. That's the most information on Cuban tourism I have seen.
I had heard about many laws going into place at new hotels in Cuba to avoid prostitution. So I don't know if the apartide thing is because they are "cuban" or because they don't want their own people selling themselves to try to survice.

I oppose your motion for a communist healthcare system. Allow this video set elaborate.

This video is 1/6 short videos of one episode of ABC's 20/20 on healthcare. If you are patient and watch them, I think you will be able to see another perspective on healthcare.

Define democracy for me. On the national level, isn't it political office that is bought by the highest bidder? Sure, the people get to vote on it but candidates run on one platform and when elected do whatever they want. I don't think any of us could afford political office.
Granholm's pal Hillary loaned her campaign 5 million so what is the net worth of those making the decisions?
As far as medicine and the reliance of research being done in this country, do you think that's why medications cost so much here? Think we're paying the cost of that research? And how much of it is actually done here? You think some of it is outsourced so profits increase to pay the salaries of the corporate executives?
Don't know much about Cuba but will visit Michigan_Man's listed web site to broader my knowledge.

No, democracy does not mean political office is bought by the highest bidder. Democracy means that the person with the most votes wins political office. If the highest bidder always won then Steve Forbes would have won the Republican nomination years ago, Mitt Romney would be the current Republican nominee, Hillary Clinton would be in first place, Ron Paul would have picked up steam from all the money he raised, and Mike Huckabee would have never had a rats chance in hell.

I myself hold political office and I didn't have any money, I was just 19 years old when I ran and didn't spend more than $100 and bought a few signs to go against an 8-year incumbent.

As for the cost of medication it is driven up by a few factors. One, the millions of dollars of research that must go into developing a medication. Two, the moral hazard effect created by insurance companies and government coverage which separates the consumer from the price causes us to not care about the price of something because we don't have to pay for it and allowing the hospitals and drug stores to jack up the price. Third, government regulations that requires massive paperwork nonsense that in many cases does not work or keeps effective drugs off the market (like the thimerisol controversy that scared everyone into believing that mercury in vaccines causes autism, it was banned, thousands of kids didn't get vaccinated, and after the ban autism rates remained exactly the same and the drug was proven to be safe).

You expressed concern about outsourcing, but why? Globalization is what gives us this

Globalization is what gives us this internet, you and me our phones, uplifts extreme poverty, and reduces the costs of goods here at home so that we have more of our checks to spend on other things in our local economy. We have free trade between Michigan and Ohio, Michigan and Texas, Michigan and California, why not Michigan and Canada? Canada is closer? If we banned any form of outsourcing then we would have no oranges or orange juice because all the orange growing jobs are in Florida or California. If California, Florida, Canada, and everyone else took the approach that you suggest then we would have no auto industry because there would be nobody to drive our cars. Why not trade with our neighbors in Canada? Why not trade with our brethren in Africa and China? Trade helps everyone. Two heads are always better than one, so why not bring in more people into the economy?

I should note that www.therealcuba.com is not my website, it is simply a link to a website run by Cuban Americans attempting to provide information on Cuba that the government suppresses.
