Far between sundown's finish an' midnight's broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing
Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
An' for each an' ev'ry underdog soldier in the night
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

In the city's melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched
With faces hidden while the walls were tightening
As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin' rain
Dissolved into the bells of the lightning
Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake
Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned an' forsaked
Tolling for the outcast, burnin' constantly at stake
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
An' the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

Through the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
All down in taken-for-granted situations
Tolling for the deaf an' blind, tolling for the mute
Tolling for the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute
For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an' cheated by pursuit
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

Even though a cloud's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed
An' the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting
Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting
Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
An' for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look
Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

The last verse of this song struck a nerve like lightening. Especially the last 4 sentences.

Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

" countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse "

" accused, misused, "

We've read the constant headlines now for 5 years.

Soldiers CHARGED

Soldiers KILLED

It means the same to me. BOTH ARE VICTIMS.

Victims of the insanity of another WAR, that never should of been.

Protesters screamed during Nam, BABY KILLERS.

Protesters scream now IRAQ, BABY KILLERS.

" countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse "

I wouldn't want to be in there shoes for anything.

Understand, you are not in their bodies or minds. THEY ARE.

Sometimes you have to kill, from being killed. Others just lose it.

" countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse "

These lyrics by Bob Dylan are brilliant. Too bad from 1964 to 2008, they are still so relevent.

AGAINST THIS WAR, NOT THE SOLDIERS.

Longshot, Thanks for not taking down these replies. They were derogatory but a point was made. Many times you have valid comments although my old prejudice's from being a Vietnam vet get rustled. 56,000 and some odd names are on a wall in DC for nothing because of the liberal press and antiwar activism. A few are there so I could live, literally. The point is that people will listen, even me, if you don't seem as though you are ramming ideas down people's throats. I will never agree with all the liberal rhetoric but I will listen if it's delivered with just a little empathy and class.

I will not have these children on my blogs.
colt, midevils, shockhazard ( not all the time ) cannot engage in intelligent dialog about any subject. They are automatically deleted, whether in agreement or disagreement with anything I post. I have yet to go onto any of these individuals blogs and hurl derogatory, name calling insults. Yet they show up constantly on mine already knowing they will be deleted. I cannot imagine a mature adult doing this day in and day out. Christ, if you don't like someone WHY FOLLOW THEM CONSTANTLY?

And there are 58,279 names on that Wall because Their Government sent them there for a pacific cause, THEN WOULDN'T LET THEM DO IT. Long before the Tet Offensive blew entire world of Media wide open.

And who died in that War? Nick Named
THE POOR BOYS WAR?

Conservatives?

Put blame where blame is due. Bobby Kennedy knew the mistake of having gotten into Nam in the first place. First thing on his agenda upon being sworn in as President, ( AND NOBODY INCLUDING REPUBLICANS DOUBT HE WOULD OF BEEN ELECTED )was pulling out troops immediately.
Nixon had 7 F'N years continuing the Slaughter of our troops. Protesters started out doing just that PROTESTING THE WAR. Unfortunately in the rage, that anger was Wrongly Diverted to the troops forced to fight it. I'd like to NOT SEE THAT HAPPEN AGAIN.

I'll be damn if I repeat BUSH'S mistake.
A mistake starting another unwinnable war. Protesters need to Focus of who and what they're protesting.
You can be against this War, and at the same time let the SOLDIERS KNOW. It is Solely the War being prot

protested against, and not them.

When the people responsible for taking out R.F.K. did so, they also took out thousands & thousands more of our troops in Nam.

My cousin and friends that served In Country in Nam, would totally disagree with you about what was the problem. In 65, their hands were tied. And NO MEDIA THEN had anything to do with the doings of what our Government did or did not do. Your trying to Justify your service there by saying it was LIBERALS FAULT. Which is mind boggling. Since it was MAINLY the Poor Lib Kids getting drafted & doing the fighting and dying there. In your mind there has to be a reason for the loss. But sorry, your picking the wrong people for that entire nightmarish mishap called Nam. The close friend whose husband that died 10 years ago do to life long agent orange health issues. Told a different story than you, IN DETAIL. Liberals fault? Just isn't there.

Fact was the V.C. weren't as easy to weed out of the jungle as the U.S.A. thought. The French already knew it. How long did they try?

Nam was started during D.D.E Presidency,

Sorry but I question you being a Nam Vet, or any vet. Off by over 2,000 names on Wall. And you just don't seem to have any real actual knowledge about the Nam War.

And I have heard that same CONSERVATIVE RHETORIC EVERYTHING IS ALL THE LIBERALS FAULT A MILLION TIMES OVER.

NO NAM Vets that served In Country that I personally know, BACK OUR GOVERNMENT SENDING OUR TROOPS TO IRAQ.

And not ONE of them Rant, that it was protesters or media that kept them from doing what needed to be done in Nam. Our Government Solely from the beginning of that Horror, never let the troops that they sent relentlessly there to DO A JOB, DO IT.

PERIOD.
