McCain wants to overturn Roe v. Wade. Obama opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case.

Both candidates offer full details on the issue on their websites, further understating the importance of the subject.
(Read McCain Details)
(Read Obama Details)

The question is -- do you care about this issue?  Where does it rank in terms of importance for you?   Why does the issue always rise to the top of political debates?

For me, it's way down on the list -- not even in the top ten!!

Economy, Health Care, Oil Prices, Energy, The War in Iraq, Fair Trade, Invasion of Privacy, Education, Infrastructure, Foreign Policy, Social Security and more.

Actually, abortion barely makes my list.  I will say this: leave it alone for now -- there are much more pressing issues to deal with.

What say you?  I really want to know.

I wish these politicians would fight as hard to keep jobs in America and illegals out as they do the abortion issue.

To me the abortion issue is #1 on my list. If you look at the Declaration of Independence, it states that ALL have the right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That includes unborn children. I will NEVER vote for a candidate that is for the murder of innocent lives. NEVER!! I don't care what they promise me. Lower taxes, less for a gallon of gas, etc. NEVER! I know, I know, I can hear the debate now. How can we in a sophisticated medical society like ours deny that life is present in the womb? Simply look at a video of a child in the womb. How can you say that this isn't considered life? Why does "breath" have to be part of the definition of life? Look at a plant, just because it doesn't "breath" doesn't mean it isn't alive! Try to abort a puppy or a kitten because it would be inconvenient to take care of the puppies and kittens once they are born and you will be thrown in jail by the animal activists!!
Now don't get me wrong. Women should not be treated any differently than men. It should not be a "woman's issue." It takes two to tango! Men need to step up and take responsibility for their offsping. This is an entirely different issue that we can blog on. Men in America don't want to take the responsibility of their children and leave everything up to the woman. This should never be an issue in America. If men would take responsibility, less women would get abortions.

(continuation from above) It is a moral obligation to think about the consequences of sexual intercourse. I teach my middle school students that for every action and decision that you make, be prepared for a reaction and a consequence. Sometimes it is good, sometimes bad. But be ready because one or the other will happen! There is always a risk of pregnancy. People need to keep this in mind. Why hold an innocent baby responsible for our "stupid" decisions?
Don't get me wrong, women should be treated with dignity, respect, and as equals in our society. I am married and my wife is treated as my equal. We make decisions together. This is not a woman's issue. It is a man and woman's issue because as I stated before, it takes two to create a life (three if you count God!)
What about abortion to save the life of a woman? That should be left up for the consenting adults. But in our medical society, let's admit it, it happens less and less. The chances of this happening are miniscule. But it does happen. But,why do we have to use this as an excuse to allow abortion at any time for any reason?
I realize that accidents happen. It happened to my wife and I. Although we were defastated at the time because we were established in our careers, etc. I would never give my daughter back in a million years! I couldn't imagine having an abortion. It never even entered into our minds, even though my wife was at risk!
Do yourself a favor and think about what an abortion does to the fetus (as the abortionists call it, but I call it a baby). His/her limbs being parts tore o

Abortion IS the most pressing issue facing our country today. A baby in the womb is a human being, alive, and it is murder to kill a human being just because they are considered "inconvenient". Life DOES begin at conception, contrary to popular belief. Once a nation allows murder of its own citizens, where will it stop? Abortions also hurt women, physically and mentally. If interested in learning more about how abortions hurt women, please go to The Justice Foundation's website at http://www.txjf.org

I can never let myself vote for someone who supports abortion. Roe v. Wade was not about a woman's right to have an abortion in the first place, it was about whether or not the doctor could be prosecuted for performing an abortion.

I believe in a woman's right to choose, but i believe that choice is made when she chooses to have sex. no matter how much protection you use, there is always a chance of getting pregnant. in the case of rape, well, the baby is innocent, they didn't do anything to the woman and they don't deserve to be punished for their fathers crimes.

"Abortion IS the most pressing issue facing our country today"

No it is not! We have our young men and women overseas in harms way.

We have a complete meltdown of our economy at home.

We have politicians that stand by and let our borders be overrun by invaders.

But to you religious nut jobs abortion is the most pressing issue?

I wish there was no need for any abortions. I've had many friends, in high school, that got them and they are just emotionly and physically devestating. If you Really care about having fewer abortions then you Must be open to the idea of expanding education about sexuality and birth control. They go hand in hand. You can't prevent the flow of information to young people about choices dealing with thier sex lives and expect them to make informed decisions.
And as for the Constitution, as quoted by Mr. Wagner " the Declaration of Independence, it states that ALL have the right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Well, okay, great, the founding fathers were great, the constitution is great but lets not forget that, at the time written, The ALL didn't mean black people in relation to LIBERTY and they had no intention that Women would be doing any voting...so lets not get carried away trying to use that phrase or that document to support a campaign against abortion.

Approximately 4000 abortions are perfomed every day in the United States. That means more American babies were killed just yesterday than soldiers that have died in the wars in Iraq and Afganistan combined.

And yes, the issue is important to me. There's also a difference between religiosity and a healthy religious feeling. The latter describes me.

LeMay14.....why so cruel? religious nut jobs? because we care about life....ALL life? Perhaps if everyone truely cared about lives (especially politicians) we wouldn't be in such a mess here.

This is in response to Mr. Thelresh. I would wager, if I were a betting man, that you also are for "separation of church and state" (as so called by the ACLU crowd). The founding fathers did not intend us to have "freedom from religion" but freedom of religion. Therefore, if I were you I wouldn't use that argument on the intent of the founding fathers. That may have not been there intention, but we are bound by these "laws" and they must be interpreted literally. Therefore, in today's society, the ALL have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness whether it is a LEGAL allien, black, hispanic, white, woman, man, child, unborn child.
Watch a video on how an unborn child is butchered by partial birth abortion. Watch as they squirm and form a scream with their lips. Watch as the push that saline/chemical into their blood stream and watch them die. We are a civilized society?????? No, we are barbarous, uncouth, uncultured, do as you please society. We need to get back to the basis on which our country was founded and apply it to ALL!!!!

Because if someone thinks that with all that's going on in this country that abortion is the most pressing issue we have, They're a nut job.

Abortion and it`s whacked skewed laws should be number one. Every day how many unborn children are murdered on demand? What`s ironic is if someone hurts/kills an unborn child without the mothers consent ( accident, crime, etc ) they can be prosecuted, but if it`s with consent.......no harm/murder occured? LOL

Every election the abortion issue raises it's ulgy head. The far left wants to kill babies, even when they survive the procedure, the far right wants to make sure no one has the choice to start with. What it all boils down to is that the best case scenario for the pro-life side is that this issue is sent back to the states to decide on a state by state basis. The best case for the pro-abortion side is that nothing happens at all.
This election may result in the appointment of at least two new SC judges. If so, the question that will most assuredly be asked during nomination will be, "do you think Stare Decisis applies to Roe v. Wade". The question that I have is, why does the left always invoke Stare Decisis (settled law) when it comes to killing babies, but not when deciding who the participants are in a marriage? Any thoughts?

You are all a bunch of morons. Fetus= no feeling... not a human life. Abortion= woman's right to choose what to do with her body. Why should the government legislate what is between a woman and her doctor? Mr. Wager, I am really happy for you and your wife. I really am. But I don't think that just because you might have religious beliefs, that you and the rest of right-wing America should shove your religious BLEEP down the rest of our throats. For those of us that paid attention in 9th grade biology, we learned in something called evolution, which basically makes the Bible obsolete. So don't give me any BLEEP about God's will. My religion is between me and God, and I don't want you, or anyone else for that matter to tell me how to live my life.

And that goes for gays too. All you religious nuts are all hating on gays too. Why do we care if gays get married? Let them have THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS! So let me get this straight... unborn fetuses with no feelings, no cognitive abilities, and no formed brain--- they can be born (even if the mother is raped and does not want to have to endure 9 months of pregnancy after being raped). However, gays, who have NO CONTROL over their sexual tendencies.. we are going to discriminate against them?

Yeah.. I am sure that is what Jesus would do. Why don't all of you religious nutjobs open your eyes, and realize that the Republican Party is using you guys to put crooks into office, so that the likes of Bush and Cheney can screw the American people over????

I rest my case.

Btw... Cat Rat And Pigs is a curse word?? (the first letter of each word) I got bleeped for that in my previous comment.

Geez... want to talk about violation of first amendment rights?? Since when is c r a p a curse word?? And we are going to worry about whether two men can get married--- God forbid.

Tommy you were taught a THEORY not fact. It is still considered a THEORY by everyone and not fact. You should have paid more attention to the word THEORY. lol

You presented a weak and angry case. It should be rested.

Good point former_detroiter. Except for the fact that maybe if YOU had paid attention, you would have heard the part where, according to the national Academy of Sciences:

"Some scientific explanations are so well established that no new evidence is likely to alter them. The explanation becomes a scientific theory. In everyday language a theory means a hunch or speculation. Not so in science. In science, the word theory refers to a comprehensive explanation of an important feature of nature that is supported by many facts gathered over time. Theories also allow scientists to make predictions about as yet unobserved phenomena"

I re-rest my case. lol.
