The Free Press is reporting that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick hired at least 29 friends and family members to city posts since taking office.  Some are arguing that the number is excessive, and that the news just adds to the perception that this administration has not always acted in an ethical manner.  But Kilpatrick spokeswoman Denise Tolliver points out that the practice is not illegal and that there is a long tradition in Detroit of hiring relatives of city employees.

What do you think?  Does this further sully Kilpatrick's reputation, or were the hirings appropriate?

Sure it's common practice. That does not make it right! There needs to be a law against this. The media may exaggerate the truth a bit, however the mayor exaggerates lies. Therefore I'd have to side with the media.

most cities have long had laws that would not allow nepotism and cronyism, I asure if you were to look at the city of detroit ordnances, you find such.

The Mayor feels he is above any law and this story is not new!

I think he should only be allowed to hire prostitues to work for the city . That way , Detroiters would know exactly what kind of job they were going to get , and exactly how much it wwould cost them in advance .

I wonder how KK supporters will spin this latest news...let's see:

1. Kwame was doing his part to fight unemployment?

OR....

2. The media is framing Kwame..he really doesn't even know these people...it's all an illusion

can't wait to see what excuse they'll cook up for this one!

The Mayor has not just started being a con artist, this has been his make-up for quiet a while. And all of this information that is now being exposed, has always been in our view! I'm sure the more you dig, the more you will find out. And the friends and family plan is the Kilpatrick m/o. And if you keep digging, and and dig deep enough we as tax paying citizens might just get lucky luckey enough to get more 'letters of resignations' which hopefully will include that lieing A@@ Mayor..Good work media keep it coming

Not surprised. He could be guilty of anything and I'd believe it. He has no morals or regard for people other than himself, his family and friends. The rest of Detroit HE could care less about. He's consistently shown that throughout his terms. The pole is funny, I'm guessing the 10% who think it's ok are his family and friends...how obvious!

Hiring friends and family is one way to keep things quiet. i wonder how many of the family and friends were at the mayors party that noone seem to know about.

I propose building a wall around the whole city and locking the gate. And then ship them guns and whiskey. And the when all of the carnage and killing is done, let whity from the suburbs come in and take over. Then things willimprove.

If I was Mayor I probally would hire friends and family into jobs.
I have very few really close friends and I would want to have people around me I know I could trust!

As if this "breaking news" is a big suprize. The Don has been hookin up his "family" since day one. With all the shadiness he's involved in, anyone close to normal morality would blow the whistle on him in a heartbeat. Wouldn't you Mr. Gary Brown?

I've know about this friends and family deal since day one and I never voted for this clown. Jo6pak I hope you are kidding when you make those kind of statements. But anyway this pattern has went on passed down from his mother and father. So why is anyone surprised. The people of this city will get thru this ordeal. I can't wait (since 2002).

recallkwame, it doesn't work to sign any online petition as it will not be counted. It has to be inhand and judicated by someone who can vouch for you.
With the internet, you could rack up a gadzillion names and no one could say whom was who. Nice try though as we sense that you are tired of dealing with "Don Klammy", the head of the clan. Correct?

How many people in this world dont hire family and friends. Wow so what, just as long as they are doing their jobs.
My goodness, the plants are full of family and friends.

I have a bachelor's degree in English/Education, but more than anything else, my year at Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts prepared me for this experience.
