Our "new" Florida Long Horned Cows arrived today. 3 heifers, 2 with calves "on the ground," and one soon to deliver. They DO NOT appreciate ANYONE coming into THEIR pasture, and wouldn't give a second thought to putting one of their 2 1/2 foot horns right up your wazoo. They are an "excellent added security system," if ever there was one! Of course, it's also ONE more step for our family to become INDEPENDENT from commercial meat. We already have a freezer stocked with venison, bear, turkey and 'gator. I barter with my neighbor for her goat-cheese, and either grow my own vegetables and herbs or get them from local farmer's markets. Shortly, we'll have fresh beef. I'm looking forward to becoming less and less dependent on the grocery store in the future.

I know how proud people can be of their home grown product. Per chance, will there be a BEEF TASTEING ? I could probably give you an honest, good, and accurate good review after sampling a 1/4 side ! LMAOROF !!!!!! You're cattle are spooked by droolers are they ?

Not much seems to intimidate them! They WILL check you out, as you approach the fence. For some reason, they are starting to like "Momma"! LMLAO!

Deborah the cows can't read minds, otherwise momma probably wouldn't be on their favorites list. Spent some time on a working ranch as a kid, winters we used to put out hay bales, feed, suppliment cubes and molasses. A couple of the cows would try to jump in the truck bed with you just to be first in line ! Have you got a goat or two ? They are fantastic for unwanted weed/vine control. Nice place by the way. You can't beat that country living ! :)

We do, Pattie, we do! And soon the fattest bull (after he becomes the fattest steer) will be unadulterated beef in the freezer. They ALL have names, too. The big white one is "Bossy," 'cause she's the meanest, the brown and white one is "Cocoa," 'cause she looks like cocoa with whipped cream on top, the big black and white Momma is "Gertrude," just because, the black baby with the white stripe across his back is "Polecat" 'cause he looks like a skunk, and the baby black and white one CAME named "Obama," "'cause he's black & white, and doesn't know what he's doing." THAT'S the name the Rancher we got him from gave him, I named the others. I can't stand the name "Obama" coming out of my mouth, so I've changed his name to "Buster."
MEB SAYS: "the cows can't read minds, otherwise momma probably wouldn't be on their favorites list"
Ha! That's what YOU say, MEB! You haven't sen them come running up to the gate to lick my hand one minute, and let me pet their noses, and put their horns down to my husband, and knock the SNOT of him the next! LMLAO!

The guys have a more preditory ,T-Rex type, look in the eye when they are gazing at ; ribeyes,t-bones,ribs, pot roast, and cheeseburgers on the hoof. The cows probably are getting those vibes ! LMAO You're just being sneeky giving eventual supper a name ! LOL

Deb- They are very nice, I'll have to stop and see them the next trip to LH. Congrads
When we have a calf that we are going to put in the Freezer my wife names them lunch, supper, Hamburger etc, then she stay away from that one, so I can butcher it later.
Meb Cows don't read minds, but they can read your body lanuage and know whats next...

I love MOST people, especially children and old people, and I am especially offended when someone hurts one of them. "NEVER WRESTEL WITH PIGS, THE PIGS LIKE IT, AND YOU'LL JUST GET DIRTY!" Modified from a quote by my dear friend, jfore
