Do Poisonous snakes have the same "rights" as people? I don't think so! Especially not when it comes to the possibility of a "bad boy" such as one of these, below, coming up by by house, where my children, grandbaby, dogs, horses and I live! Yet, the other day, on a County Road, near my home, when I saw a monster of a Diamondback Rattlesnake, and stopped to kill it, this is what a man in a pink jumpsuit screamed at me:
"Don't kill that snake! That snake has just as much right to live as you do!" I said, "What, are you crazy? That's a Diamondback Rattlesnake, it's deadly poisonous!" I proceeded to aim my pistol at the snake's head, which was now 2-3 feet off the ground, and seriously checking me out! Just as I fired at its head, he screamed, just like a girl! He a said, "That snake has rights too, you know!" I popped it again, because thanks to him screaming just as I shot, the first time, I only nicked the back of the snake's head. This time, I body shot it, ruining a perfectly good snake hide! Meanwhile, "Pansy Boy" dials 911. His side of the conversation goes like this, "Uh, there's some lady shooting a snake here, on the side of the road. (pause) What do you mean, so what? " Just then, some guy in a lifted Dually 4 X 4 Ford pulls up, sees what's going on, and hollers, "You go, girl!" I shook my head at "Pansy Boy," got into my truck and went home. Do I wish all the bears, cougars, gators, snakes and other dangerous critters still had enough of their own space, so they'd stay out of mine? Of Course! Does that mean I'm going to sit down, drive by, and let something as dangerous as a Diamondback Rattlesnake roam freely, where I know there is the possibility of someone DYING from the injury they are capable of inflicting? NEVER! Not now, not ever!
And the ONLY thing I'm sorry about, as far as this incident goes, is that snake came out of his territory, and into mine, and some PANSY in a pink jumpsuit made me ruin a perfectly good snake hide!

All three of these Florida Diamond Back Rattlesnakes were killed near my home. All of them were over 5 feet long. One of them had 14 rattles on the end of its tail. Each of them carried enough venom to kill a room full of people. Unlike a bee, a snake doesn't die after it inflicts a deadly bite. If it doesn't eat its prey, it slithers along on its merry way.

Some people do, in fact eat Rattlesnakes. I've HEARD that IT really does taste like chicken! I'm sorry, but I am personally unable to verify that for you, Cro, my dear, because I just can't bring myself to eat snakes, possums, raccoons, or armadillos!

Rattlesnake stew is delicious and it is more the texture than the taste I think that reminds others of chicken.

As for the question do rattlesnakes have rights? It depends on the situation. If you have one in your yard that IS threatening then by all means shoot to kill, but if your out in the woods and come apon one then either back away slowly (rattlers are not preditory to humans) and go around or in a differnt direction or stay out of the woods. It is his right to enjoy his habitat. I guess that is my biggest problem, humans are able to justify shooting anything they are afraid of without real cause. So I guess Deb you question doesn't have a yes or no answer if that makes sense?

I wasnt implying anything DeborahLakeHelen and I hope you didnt take it that way. I wouldnt eat those other animals either. :-P
If a poisonous snake came around my house, I would be scared but I would call my neighbor and he would capture it. He keeps snakes for pets. eeewwwww

I remember a guy that ran the snake show at Silver Springs. Ross Allen I think was his name. He loved all kinds of snakes. He milked rattlesnakes during his shows. Sorry, now I am showing my age.

I get what you're saying, T, 100%!
Cro, Oh Girl! I thought you'd be the BRAVE one in "our bunch," LMLAO! ;o) Cro, there also used to be a guy in Deltona who had NUMEROUS deadly poisonous snakes. He used to milk them, and send their venom "off" to be made into "antivenin." BTW, Not too long ago, there was a HUGE article in the paper about many of the hospitals being "OUT OF ANTIVENIN." It's very dangerous to harvest and the process of making the antivenin is extremely expensive. So, if you get bitten, you just MIGHT be S O L !!!!
Now, T, on the other hand, she knows her "wild game," and what to do with it. She also respects and understands, as I do, that there is a time and a place to "live and let live."
This happened to be a place where the snake was out of his/her place, and I felt the need to intervene.

I would kill a poisonous snake in a heart beat. But I could never eat one. I am getting nausea just thinking about it. : O)

LOL Pattie...only the head is poisonous! from the neck down he is just a really fat worm! No seriously...being fearful of snakes is a good thing, it can save your life, but snakes in general are not evil creatures. They provide a much needed service to this planet. They control rodent populations and believe it or not there is not a snake alive that would look at you and say...hummm lunch is served if given the option of getting away. A snake strikes out of fear not anger and with rattlers they warn you first for a reason.

Best pet I ever had was a python named Damion. I had him for 9 years. He was just over 8 foot and hung out in a cage in my bedroom or on the curtin rod above my window. My dad made me give him away when it was baby piggies he started to eat. He lived another 3 years before he died a happy old man.

Debbie, I too have Livestock which could be bitten by snakes and Die. I too shot them when they are around my property. I have a lady next door who calls the cops all the time for shot'g them, But after 10 yrs I still do it and will keep protecting my animals & myself. I have eaten Rattle snake several time and fine it to be very good to eat, the first time was in Texas about 35 yrs ago and if made right does taste like chicken.. I learned at a young age that food is all around us and you never know when you might have to eat some of these things just to live. When I was younger we spent many summers in the glades living off the land...

W, Right? Like you're going to let one of those bad boys into one of your dog pens? I've lost a few dogs "mysteriously" that way. Meaning they were fine when I checked on them at bedtime, in the morning they were all swollen around the mouth, neck or legs, nothing around, oh, puncture marks, all you can do is IV's with MACL, no antivenin for animals, too expensive, too scarce. Some make it, MOST don't, if it was a Diamondback or a Coral Snake!
P Nanny! THANK YOU! A friend of mine said, "Was he out of his freakin' mind? You're standin' there with a gun, and he's yelling at you, and calling you names?"
I didn't print ALL that the guy said, but before I drove off he called me a "bioch!" He was ALSO talking with a PANSY VOICE, so he kinda talked like this:
"Don't you shuyuut that sthnake! That sthnake hath justh asth musth wite to live asth you do!" If I'd had time, I'd have liked to worn his BLEEP out with my hairbrush!
Those ones in your pool are most likely harmless blacksnakes. They will usually be long and skinny, have round heads, and stripes that go lengthwise, from head to tail.
It's the black, short, fat ones, with a vague pattern, and a POINTED head that are the Water Moccasins.

Hi All,

Rattlers are nice compared to water moccasins, I was fishing once and reached down to grab my stringer
and there was a moccasin eating the fish on the stringer, after I got over the initial shock/ adrenalin rush .
I went to beating it with a zebco 101, I whacked him 3 times (wrong) he came after me, lucky for me he had a full belly and I done the rite thing and ran.

Haven't et rattler but I did eat a garter snake, wouldn't have done that but he bit me..tasted like chicken with a better texture.

You're braver than I am. When it comes to trying to BEAT a snake, I get nervous. I've killed them that way before, but I don't like it! I have actually seen a Water Moccasin JUMP into a small boat before. They're very curious, have no fear, and are downright aggressive. When I came home from work today, I learned that our "Fence Man" had killed a 36" Coral Snake, a pretty good sized one, as they go. He was putting in posts along some of our back property, and he said it came right up to his boot. My daughter was down in the same exact area just yesterday, with some of our new puppies, just messin' around. I'm glad he got it, before it had a chance to get her!

Is that what the right to bear arms $hit is about?? To kill snakes?? Snakes are very important to nature. They control the rodent population. I bet your "fence man" killed a king snake. Most common people get them confused with coral snakes. Discharging a fire arm to kill a snake on a public street!! I guess that's lake helen for ya!! If I seen you get out of your truck, and pull a fire arm. In the front of my home. They would have to call the MEAT WAGON for ya!!!! If you don't like nature. Maybe you need to move to PINE HILLS!!!

Those rights are taken away by those who do not care or understand! The higher population totally believes the saying "The only good snake is a DEAD snake"! What they fail to understand is that snakes do have a purpose rather they are poisonous or not! The sad thing also about this is most don't care if it is poisonous or not and kill it anyway just because it is a slithering snake and some look at them as a symbol of Satan...give me a friggin' break!

But, if a poisonous snake threatens your or your loved ones life then by all means kill it before it gets you, any kids or anyone alse around! But before you do, you had better know what you are doing because the snake will defend itself and some even will chase after you!

I have been around snakes all my life, even caught poisonous ones for Ross Allen for making anti-venom! Pigmy rattlers, diamondback rattlers, coral, cottonmouth...from the small to the large. No one can do this safely without having respect for them and full knowledge about the species! One of the listed deadlyest is the Coral Snake, but Coral snakes have soft mouths with tiny vangs and have to chew on their victoms before the vangs can penitrate the venom...jerking off a good size one will cause damage even while the teeth and vangs is scraped across the skin!

We have a over 6' male rattle snake around here! They mate for life and it's mate was killed by one of our neighbors...just for spite! It never threatened anyone all these years, never attempted to attack anyone, but yet just the size and scary look of it was enough of a threat to k

You caught snakes for Ross Allen? I watched him at Silver Springs when I was a little girl. I have pictures of him holding a snake next to me. I was sooo nervous and you can see it in my forced smile.

Born, I would LOVE for you to come over to my place, ANYTIME, and round up some of the poisonous snakes we have in our pond, pastures and bay. It's actually quite shocking how many we have around here. With my horses, dogs, and all the kids that run around here, I'm sure you can understand how it is. Especially since I've lost animals to snakebites, and witnessed people being bitten, and the aftermath of what happened to them. I can't have them around our property. Now, we're getting ready to get 6 or 7 god-awful-ugly Florida Long-horned Cows! I was PRAYING we were going to be getting some PRETTY Black or Red Angus, but no...! Anyway! More critters to worry about getting snake bitten!
david, Honey, I don't think it would matter what you fed or did to the possum, in it's preparation! It's the fact that it looks like a giant rat, to me. And I just can't get that outta my lil ole head!
Cro, I remember him! He was cool to watch! I'll bet if you looked close enough at that pic of you with him when you were little, you'd see little, tiny beads of sweat across your litle nose! Out of sheer terror! LOL!
