Hello Detroit - Bank of America is here...

They announced there prescence in Detroit in full page ads in the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press with a close up and bad photo of the Joe Louis fist - which they thought represented Detroit - bad faux pas / error. I thought it was insulting to all Detroiters and to the Metro area.

They could have used the Joe Louis statue, the Dodge fountain, the UAW sculpture or a combo of both, RenCen photo, a overview photo of downtown, gathered a group of Detroiters and use a photo of them,  but NO - they used the Fist, which has been the center of debate since its was installed. Detroit and its residents are owed an explanation of why this piece of sculpture was selected to respresent Detroit - Why???

I don't think it should represent Detroit - or its efforts to reinvent and restore itself as a city of promise and diversity.

   What do you think????

I think it's just a statue of the right arm of one of the Greatest fighters to ever lived. If someone thinks that it means something more than what it is, then maybe it’s those people who have a problem. I also believe that it represents Detroit’s fighting spirit. We have been licked, washed up for years and we merely survive because of our city's pride.

Many rivers to cross
And it's only my will that keeps me alive
I've been licked, washed up for years
And I merely survive because of my pride

What does the fist mean to you? A guy I used to work with swore it was a "Black power fist" and that's why he didn't like it! LOL I have even heard some people say it faces the suburbs as-if that has some mystic evil plan behind it, LOL.
It faces hart plaza. You can go to Google maps, and "street view" Jefferson ave. right downtown. I think it’s a cool statue and that’s it.

I do to SEEDUB, some people can see only the negative. I think it represents the fact that Detroiter's are strong and fighters. We can take anything you throw at us and still survive.

Bank of America is very often not known for doing the right thing. For example they are one of the only banks to offer loans to unamericans. That's right, if you can document who you are, regardless of whether or not you are a U.S. citizen you can get a mortgage loan thru BOA. In addition, when that property owner gets forclosed on, they often sell it at a discounted price thereby lowering your property value. Then claim write off on federal taxes. So they loan their money, yet we get stuck with the bill when it surely will go bad, since the people are not documented U.S. citizens.

that fist had nothing more to do with detroiters than the statue at the city county building. It was made to salute only one detroiter the brown bomber!

surely if Detroit was full of fighters there would be no Kawame or a long term of Uncle Coleman. The schools would be the best in the state and the people who live there would demand their neighbor hoods be clean and violence free!

You all give far to much credit to the people and take away far too much credit to the brown bomber

NO IT'S JUST A FIST WITHOUT AN IDENITY.
It would of been nice if Bank of America had used the entire Statue of Joe Louis with his FIST attached. HIS IDENITY WITH HIS FIST.
That's the difference between CLASS, and NO CLASS. That fist alone represents NOTHING. And in my opinion is not only an insult to Detroit but to the Man who that fist represented.
Joe Louis was not just a Great Boxer but a Genuinely Great human being. Detroit & Joe Louis deserve better for a representation.

Maybe to YOU it's, that. But anyone who cares to know, Knows exactly what that statue is about. And many people have their own special meaning of what that statue is to them. Some negative, and some positive. I think it's very artistic. I would think anyone with class would visit Detroit, and wonder what’s with the “fist“. Most people with class would find out the history of what's behind the “fist”. I think only a classless person, would knock an artists work instead of appreciating the work for what it is, a spectacular interpretation of a great man. But whatever, to each their own. Joe's arm does stand out if anything. Some people will love it. Some will think it stinks. The cool thing about art, is that they are both right!
I think I can put a check on the “it stinks” side for you.
LOL

Well....If it's anykind of an omen then Detroit's fate is sealed.....Louis died a drunken, broke bum. Was a greeter for tips at nightclubs in Vegas, and Sinatra, Martin, Lawford and others paid for his funeral............

SEEPUTZ, for the first time, we have to admit that we may (using that word lightly) agree on that belief of what that picture is.

Years ago we ran into an airbrush artist and became friends with him. He often would paint odd ramblings on our white T-shirts, and they were good works to look at.

We were also building a custom Harley and could not decide what to do to the tank, but then one day we asked if he would paint a heavily muscled fist breaking out of a jail or a prison cell wall. The arm was the arm of a weight lifter, which showed all the veins in swollen size, and the bricks scattering as the first first broke through. After several weeks of pleading, he agreed.
When he brought the tank back, we swore that he performed one of his best works, and even included a tattoo on the arm that said "FREEDOM". Every time someone saw our tank and asked what it meant, each and everyone believes something different in that arm and that tattoo.

Couldn't that apply here? Doesn't each person have a right to each believe what that arm is about?

LONGSNOT, before you call the kettle black, try getting your AZZ out of it to look in the mirror as ask yourself, what gives you the right to condemn or denote who has class and who does not.

From all the postings that you do, you are so far behind the pack, that if they all laid down and slept for a year, you wouldn't even be close to half of them.

How dare you insinuate who has what?

Is this thread a joke?

Detroit chose to put up a fist downtown. I've always thought it sent the wrong message, no matter what it is meant to mean. I get the reson for it and what it should represent, but come on. It is a big fist in a town with a reputation around the world of violence.

Detroit chose to put it there and we cannot exactly complain when it's image is used in something like this can we?

I welcome Bank of America here :)
