I spoke to Jim Fiene, Senior Vice President of Open Pantry stores this afternoon on the phone.  Something I read on WisPolitics.com peaked my interest.... so I called.

Open Pantry stores are doling out "Doyle Dollars" to customers who buy cigarettes.  It is a $1 off coupon for 2 packs of cigarettes purchased.

Fiene says the chain will continue to dole out the dollars through January 31st to remind people why their cigarettes cost more.

I also spoke to Matt Cantor, Deputy Communications Director for Governor Jim Doyle.  He told me over the phone, the Governor has no worries.  Actually, he's pleased with the impact the cigarette tax increase has had the past 2 weeks since it's inception January 1st.  The state has a record number of calls to its quit line.

Huh!

But what about a government that is addicted to cigarette tax dollars? I'm not a smoker, I quit 25 years ago. But with cigarette taxes being so easy to raise, our government has targeted that money for everything from health care to municipal beaches. What are they going to do if people actually QUIT in droves?

The only part that irks me is that smokers are targeted as the only people with health problems or that cause health problems.
Alcohol causes WAY more deaths to both the user and innocent people.
Overeating and excess weight cause extreme health issues.
But, hey, let's just pick on those disgusting smokers.
I'll have to go buy two packs and get my Doyle Dollar so I can place it on my dartboard along with the Bush and Cheney pics.

What happens when they saay that a guy like me eats too much fast food or doesn't exercise enough to suit some government bureaucrat? Fast food and snack foods are the next on the hit list. Have you noticed a marked decrease in the appearances of Ronald McDonald? After Joe Camel, he was next on the hit list. And our liberties keep eroding in favor of "The Nanny State".

Wasn't it Britain that a few months ago decided to ban health coverage for overweight people? If we go to government funded health care that nannies will be sticking their noses into what we eat left and right.

Of course the governer is pleased with it because it is more money in the budget for him to waste. I remember him saying that money was going to go to educate people on the harmful effects of smoking, but last month it was reported that the money was going into a general fund. Betcha someone gets a raise in our government this year.....

Actually, Cynthia, I am a soon-to-be ex-smoker. I go to the ear, nose and throat specialist today to see why I am losing my voice. My regular doctor is speculating that I may have cancer of the vocal cords or my Barrett's Esophagus has become cancerous and is spreading.
So, I have my patches and Zyban.
Wish me luck.
It wasn't Doyle's tax that is making me quit, it's my health.
Not everyone that smokes gets sick. Actually, my illness comes from years of drinking and vomiting and the acid causing damage to my esophagus. Smoking just doesn't help. It was alcohol that caused my problems and I quit drinking 11 years ago.

Thanks Cynthia.
I appreciate that.
I had the pleasure of having a camera go through my nose to my throat today and it wasn't a pretty picture. My vocal cords are swollen with white spots and the larynx is swollen and yellow. Ewwwwww.
I'll be having a biopsy done in three weeks.
He wants to wait until after I've quit smoking for a while and finish another series of antibiotics. I am also having an endoscopy (sp?) done at Community Memorial next week.
Ahhhh....aging....isn't it fun?
All I can say is, people have to be pretty stupid to keep smoking now. Between the cost and the health risk it just isn't worth it.
Eventually, we all get older and our bodies revolt. We are all just like cars. We age, the parts wear out and , if you didn't do proper maintenence, some parts need replacing.
I have a lot of miles on me and I've had body repair already...lol.

So Doyle, I don't get it.
Your tax was to help generate funds yet you are happy people are quitting?
So was it a tax to fund whatever?
Or was it a tax to control human behavior?
You must be feeling very God like, huh?
We're not worthy, we're not worthy!

I love that Open Pantry is helping offset the huge cost due to this tax hike. Help people stop lighting up why not tax lighter $400.00 each wouldn't that be just as helpful?

Quit on your own then.
I did. My doctor prescribed Zyban and I purchased the patch.
I'm on day 3 of not smoking now and I already can smell things better. Smokers stink. I had to wash my jackets because I couldn't stand the smell after just two days of stopping. Funny thing is smokers can't smell that smell.
I smoked for 20 years and then quit for 6 years when I was 34. For some stupid reason I started smoking again when I was 40. I think it was just pressure and I was hanging around people that smoked.
Now my health is hurting because of it and my father died from emphysema!! You would think I would know better!!
I really look forward to being completely smoke free. Don't rely on a politician. We have learned that lesson.
