Yep...I did it.  I joined the Air National Guard.  (4 days before my 35th birthday...after which I'd be too old for the Air Force).  I'll be training in as a Loadmaster...part of the Air Crew on the legendary C-130 Hercules.

One of the things I love about weather is being up in it!  I've loved aviation for years. I've also been incredibly fortunate in my life and giving back matters a lot to me.  So pursuing a private license never felt like the quite the right fit...but everything about about serving as aircrew on the C-130's feels right to me.

A lot of folks (parents especially) have freaked about the fact that this may involve dangerous endeavors at times....as opposed to what?  My usual selfish adventures...climbing mountains up to 22,000, rock climbing, kayaking solo on Lake Superior, crossing the Sierra Nevada alone, biking 100's of miles alone.  Hmmmm...

Unlike the afore mentioned shenanigans...the missions on the C-130's involve disaster relief (the MN Guard was there for Hurricane Katrina), humanitarian relief, research (including both poles) and or course supporting our troops.  No...this is not a political statement on my part.  Just a willingness and indeed, great pride, to serve the American People where ever they decide the need is greatest.

Yeah, it may not  be as "hollywood" as my previous high-profile endeavors (aka. Desperate Housewives)...but it's already the proudest decision I've ever made...and I'm just getting started.

Here are a few pics of the shenanigans I'll be up to in the years ahead.  ; )

More details soon....

Happy early Birthday! What do you want for your Birthday? I think a gift that is not work related would be great.

Hmmm.... maybe a snow mobile. Hmmm, maybe I should get you a private airfield. I know, Sea, Air, and Land, all three. A snow mobile, a yacht, and an airfield that way I do not end up having my gifts put in a bad present pile.

Christine,
Your decision to join the Air National Guard is very admirable. I'm sure many people are jealous of the things you have done and the excitement you bring to life. I hope the station not only supports you but allows you to share your Air National Guard experiences with us during the news. That would be very cool!!

Thank you. I am a little jealous though, you have a picture of my USCG marine pilot light and I have seen your plane flying over my house for weeks now and you haven't waved. What gives?

Maybe one day the plane will be yours. Well if you do as good there, as you do the weather, then its not too far over the horizon.

Can I call you if I want to go parachuting?

Christine,

I am very proud of you for joining the ANG and think this has increased your Cool Points total by at least 100.

This is public service at its best. Fox9 is truly lucky to have someone like you working for them. Not only would this be a GREAT story for Fox to cover, but it will also give you a great edge when it comes to reporting any type of military story. Those other reporters will only be able to talk about what they have heard from others, while you can speak from personal experience.

Best of luck!
