I met four Milwaukee County bus drivers on Saturday, who have all been assaulted on the job.  I was shocked to hear their stories - I had no idea the job could be so dangerous.  I think it's a shame that anyone would attack a bus driver, who's only doing his or her job - a crucial service for thousands who don't own a car.  Please respect all drivers!

Without revealing any names, can you give us some details? Which routes were they working? What time of the day? Was it kids that did this? What sets these people off?

You hear about it all the time. As much as I ride the bus, I never actually witness anything like that up-close and personal. I be hearing that kids be doing it and/or it be adults beyond my age way older who do such nonsense.

I can honestly say what I hear about it is because either a bus driver hear high school kids getting all loud on the bus and they don't know how to keep their voices down. It's like they don't have respect for other passengers.

It also could be about he say/she say situations from high school kids and that turns into a fight and the bus driver gets involved and maybe some passengers break it up and kick all the high school kids off the bus and the bus driver ends up being the one taking a hit from these high school students.

Bus drivers are accidently probably missing destinations when passengers stops is coming up on the corner and it happens and it's not their fault; (it's accidental because it happens to me sometimes), their "Stop Request" bell sound is low and they can barely hear it, or people be playing with the bell cord, and passengers don't speak up and say "requesting for the next stop" if the bell doesn't work.

A passenger is exiting off another route and wants to jump on a new route and the previous driver blows the horn and signals to wait, but the other driver isn't paying attention. I should know; I use to run for the bus a lot but I don't no more. It isn't worth it. REMEMBER: THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ANOTHER BUS, BUT NOT ANOTHER YOU. People are rushing to get across the street when the opposite traffic is driving pass and be nearly almost getting hit by other cars.

Here is another thing. Someone sleeps on the bus and misses their destination and the bus driver doesn't call their stop. Listen, in the bus driver's job description, they are suppose to call out the name of the streets, but however, they have TVs on the bus that calls out every major street in the city with the bus route line that goes along with it. I can understand if you have a long day of after school recreation and a long work day (for those who ride the city bus for either situation), but you can not blame the bus driver for driving pass your destination because you were sleep. Like I said I can understand the long day situations, but you have to be able and liable to maintain a little wake time to catch the bus and get off at your destination on your own. If you can't, then it's your own darn fault; maybe you should get a ride then.

Now, a while back ago, I've been hearing that undercover police officers were suppose to join with the Milwaukee County Transit System Bus Drivers and ride the bus to make sure all passengers and bus drivers are safe on their bus and nothing doesn't get all wild and crazy, but I haven't seen or noticed any of them being on any routes or not. I don't know if it was true or a rumor, but however, they should get involved or continue to do that.

I know I've been writing a lot, but this is an interesting topic because this is happening on a rare basis.

School bus companies should get involved and just provide more school busses for those who live far from their school with no questions asked so they can't be seen on the city bus.

MCTS should make a rule where no high school students are allowed to ride the city bus no more until they turn 21. Also, what MCTS should do is get people who ride the city bus and who are the age(s) of 21-Years-Old and Older make MCTS Bus IDs for all riders (just as if you would get a instructor permit and drivers license from the DMV). That means when people pay the bus fare by money or bus tickets and receive a bus transfer, or if they have a weekly bus pass, all they would have to do is show the bus driver their picture ID (which is required to have at all times) to be eligible and liable to ride the city bus anywhere and everywhere and as I said before get undercover police officers involved as well just to be on the safe side. All cities with city bus lines in Wisconsin should do this: Green Bay, Madison, Sheboygan, Grafton/Ozaukee, Waukesha, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha.

It wouldn't require the city, the state, or federal money to be taken out of either. It can come out of people's hard-earned money, if they're willing to go through that. What do you all think? Does that make sense and sounds good to you all or no?

OK - does everyone understand why I no longer ride Milwaukee buses anymore? When bullets started bouncing around the inside of METAL BUSES - it was high time I found another way to get around. Armored tank comes to mind.

Cathy My husband works for the bus Company and 4 is only the tip of the ice berg as to how many of their employees are assaulted. Why doesn't fox 6 do a story as to why the transit company covers these stories up they never seem to make news, someone at the top (I don't need to name names, you see him on TV talking about the transit Company all the time) is covering up so much of what these people have to deal with, this is nothing new and has been going on for decades.

those bus drivers need more protection. who would want to assault a bus driver? it sounds like that saftey is an issue with drivers while on the job.

I remember hearing stories like this years ago. I'm thinking that it could be a factor of unruly customers who don't care. - I use that term loosely. They don't care. For others who ride and drivers who transport the riders from one point to another. I too have relatives that work for the bus company for years as drivers and mechanics. When I see the drivers on the buses, I think about my older cousins who drive the buses on their routes everyday. My late uncle, Robert L. Burton was a bus driver that rode the trolley, 12, and 80 routes. There was a time that he told one of the riders (high school students) to quiet down their voices and music and would be warned to leave the bus. I forgot what year that was, but he said it (his way), and he never got assaulted.

It sounds like some of the incidents can be blamed on unruly teenagers. In one instance I was told the bus driver asked several teenagers for their fare while they were boarding - instead of forking over any money they started punching the driver in the head. He is still out on disability a year later. All he did was ask for bus fare!
