Going GREEN - I trully understand why we should all be going green, do you????  We are a very selfish, wasteful society and really need to pull the plug on all the waste.  Every little thing we do NOW - even if it is just changing your light bulbs - will make a difference.  Little by little go GREEN - little by little don't just throw things away.  If we all do one thing each, per day, before you know it WE HAVE ALL MADE A DIFFERENCE.  Why don't we start with using burlap bags to bring with us when we shop - I DO -  its a start.  I was brought up hearing four very important words "waste not, want not"  and believe me I do try very hard not to waste anything. Not just because of the money, but, it really is a sin to waste anything. Be mindful of waste, donate clothing and furniture equipment, etc., and go GREEN.  I will be needing a new roof in a year or so and I am looking into the new EcoRoofing..... In the meantime, shut-off DVDs and appliances not in use or they don't work, don't turn-on evey light in your house just because you can,  stop having junk mail sent to you, think Green, GO GREEN, BE GREEN.....

Tell me how to stop junk mail. I'm all for that, but swallowing Al's koolaid ain't one of them.

Well, here in the midwest we ARE green. Living in the country, everything is green and we take very good care of our land. We don't worry about light bulbs because the entire town of 300 wouldn't be worth $1.00 of Al's "carbon credit" ripoffs.

I can understand your concern in NY. It seems you all are SO crowded into hotbox cement buildings and houses on tiny lots. I really do wonder how you stand it. I guess it is all in what you get used to.

A lot of coastal people call us the "fly over people". Well, that might be true, but tonight I went out to my 150'x150' garden and picked fresh sweet corn, fresh tomatoes, a couple of onions and some fresh peppers to fix with corn fed Black Angus beef. That garden? It is postage-stamped size in our yard of 5 acres. I think I can stand to be a fly over person, I think I can stand it just fine.

As for conservation and environmental concerns? We've been doing that for 80 years.

MissNancy - tell us more, tell us what we exactly take for granted in our cramped spaces. I am not being sarcastic - I want to know from someone who lives it - I almost never have lites on when the a/c is on, sorry I need the a/c for health reasons, I have been carrying a canvas bag for shopping, and when I do get store bags - whih I do - I use them for poopy patrol. I was told burying dog poo was bad. I have my actual "postage stamp" size garden for herbs and some small vegies, I reuse everything possible for other uses. I give clothes away for people without. I try not to waste water, shorter showers, I use washer rince water for plants, I hang my clothes no dryer. I recycle. Help.... we need to get the message out and the answers to the people.

I recycle aluminum and scrap metal. I have the energy efficient light bulbs where I can use them. All of my lightbulbs are 60 watts or less. I give my old clothes and furniture to charities. Trash is a big issue for me as there is no recycle place here for it, but we are allowed to burn 2 times a week. I guess the little bit of smoke that it would make would be better then sitting in a land fill for years and years.

Cuteypops, not too sure about the smoke issue, but composting, and recycling is the way and thank you - 60 or less would be better. If we all just do one thing - just one - it will make a big difference.... thanks for the input. My mother always asked me for old pantyhose. She would use them for all sorts of different things. Including using the band part to tie up her garbage like a gift-wrapped present..... she was funny but very smart - the depression era you know...

I think burning garbage is probably much worse than burying it in a properly built landfill.

Using the new super low watt, long life fluorescent light bulbs is something we can all do easily that will have a big impact. I do almost all my food and house shopping at Costcos and they do not use bags. Burning garbage is a bad idea and recycling everything we can is something that we should all be doing. Drive as little as possible and use mass transit whenever you can. Walking and biking are not only good for the environment, but good for our bodies as well. It is true that if we all do a few little things, it will make a huge difference.

You are apparently a very negative individual. I started blogging on this subject for the specific reason - taking the subject from the news - to get people talking about what they can do to go green. There are a million way and if we all talk about it maybe, just maybe each individual will be able to come upon something new. Joint in don't be negative. Thanks for your thoughts anyway.

Daniel - this is exactly what I was trying to get people to do - talk about what they do to save - and you brought up the very good point as far as not too much driving (Gas waste) and walking and biking which is two-fold. Thanks - any more clues for us will be very much appreciated. Thanks....

this is nothing new i remember as a kid in the 60-70 give a hoot don't polulte. and the indian that had a tear in his eye when he turned his head to look at the camera after getting hit in the leg with trash someone thru out the window of a car on the highway.Nobody beleaved it then and that is still the problem. Back then my mom instilled the polute thing and my dad worked for a utiity (gas). there were stickers on the lighting recepticals " When not in use turn off the juice."Those values i passed on till this day.If we started taking it more sirious then it would be secound nature now. We tend to be slowly destoing our own planet. It's a shame. Specialy because there are more people in the world now.Everybody just thought it was a bunch of high hippies.

We are a selfish, user society who apparently doesn't give a hoot. How awful. Well I do, and I have been trying to ever since - maybe we can all make up for lost time????

I try and think green. I always recycle paper.
cans.plastic.etc. I'm trying to get into the
habit of thinking. It's an idea that should be
on everyone's agenda.
