Have you seen the report in the news recently about the HS kids in Belleville who were expelled because of pictures that they posted on MySpace?

Unless there were details that were not released to the public; no threats to the school were made or inferred; yet the superintendent felt that it was necessary to take action against he students: because the schools handbook says that he can. HUH?! The pictures were taken off campus, not posted using school property and yet the super felt that he had the jurisdiction and authority to take action against these students.

The guns, "drugs' and money were assumed to be real (by the super). Because the handbook says that even if the students are caught with a "toy" gun resembling the real thing they can be expelled.

My take on this rule, is that if they are caught in the possession while on campus. Not in the private sector. As reported, this event did not occur on campus and as far as I’m concerned outside of any “authority” that the super has. In my opinion this is what I would call being a vigilante. And that is wrong.

Here’s the other side to this point: what would be the difference if my son showed similar pictures of he and his friends having an Air soft fight? Would they fall under the same vigilante justice? I can guarantee that he and his friends pose an awesome sight when they are all dressed up for battle. They take their fights quite seriously and enjoy a safe and eventful time. (of course I get stuck with plastic bb’s all over my yard)

You can bet that if such an event were to cross my path: them getting expelled for being in possession of something resembling a gun; that this school system would be encountering one very rabid father.

I wholly understand the need for vigilance when it comes to the threat of gun violence in the school arena (and outside of that for that matter). But lets get focused here, a school superintendent does not have the authority to make law based judgment calls outside of the school system. That is why we have police and a proper justice system.

If a threat was made against the school then fine, otherwise the police should shoulder the responsibility of handling the investigation and prosecution; not the school system.

What do you think?

Blind,

I know of the pic's I saw, I was reminded of columbine. Should they take action, well don't we all wish now they had back then.

Good morning tall!
Admittedly I did not see the pictures, and I can't argue the point about Columbine; a tragedy to be sure.
However, my real point was that we cannot allow ourselves to go off half cocked, when something of this nature comes up: As in my point about my boy and his friends.

I think the message being sent by those pictures of drugs and assault rifles needed to be addressed. What if this same group became upset with someone at the school and all of the sudden we have another school incident. The pictures had illegal drugs being "glorified" whether they were using them, selling them or both. I blame today's parents for not checking up on their children's activities on the Internet and many would be surprised how many school children have these types of weapons. Their "message" was a slap in the face to law enforcement and parental authority. Your boy & his friends playing with airsoft guns dosen't compare to these pictures.

Did'nt see pics either. The point is the school has no jurisdiction outside of the school. It should have been reported to police so that it could have been investigated.

sorry I hit done. It should have been investigated by the police and charges filed if drugs & guns were real also dig to see if the kids talked to other students about threats to school or people. If they were'nt real maybe the whole thing would scare the crap out of them and wake them up to the fact that what they did was in no way cute. Then and only then the school should have gotten involved and suspended them. Maybe kids that think its glamourous to portray thugs should have to take a trip to prison and the morgue to see what and where that so called life can take them.

Agreed Steve; These warning signs need to be paid alot more attention to before they become tomorrow's headlines at a school or college. It looked very real to me and was meant to look real as a slap in the face to parental authority & law enforcement. It is by no means innocent childish behavior and as many have stated, those pictures will be on the Internet for the rest of their lives, possibly impacting their own futures.

I myself think the school should have taken action.

I would hate to see these post (which were done in a way to show power with drugs, weapons and money) end up being used in a school and then everyone would have said "Why wasn't something done before hand"

I applaud the super for doing what he did and I hope it is repeated if any other pics show up like that.

Blindone, I understand what you are saying about the air-soft guns, I myself have teenage boys that play with them as well as paintball, but those games are played in a completely different format.
