Adventure, excitment, EXCELSIOR, these were the emotions of four teenagers who had just set sail upon the american interstate highway system. Given to us as wings by the great Dwight David Eisenhauer. Only if Ike could see us now.
We were leaving the north behind and fully ready to embrace the confederate states. We reached Pennsylvania swiftly and knew that the journey had begun. When I saw a sign for Erie, PA the first thing that came to my mind was a movie, The Wonders. It was appropriate to switch my ipod to "doin that thing you do" and ride out the moment. We stopped to gas up and were suprised at the service. Full service gas station with no additional cost. The boys were doing heavy buissness as the cars lined up five deep. There were also a few large semi-trucks at the diesel station. I got out to stretch my legs and, beeeep, almost a collision as a red pickup dashed for the stations entrance. The person wearing sunglasses and a tan who was filling our tank winced in anxiety. I was glad to see the Penns living up to their old motto, "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence."
With God, All Things Are Possible. And with god we missed our bridge that would have put us into West Virginia. Instead we had to ride Highway 7 along the mighty Ohio River for two-hundred miles. By this time night had fallen and scenes from The hills have eyes flashed through my head. Highway 7 took us straight through good old Ohio. there weren't any other cars on the road and the only buissneses were your occashional beer hall and steal plant.
At three in the morning it was time to stop and get a motel. Wytheville, West Virginia had a Red Roof In sitting adjacent to a Waffle House. Obviously this was the perfect place to recharge for the rest of the journey. I guess its pretty easy to become isolated high up in those mountains. despite being sourounded by some of our naitons largest and most influential cities the West Virginians stay true to their motto as well, The Mountains will always be free. At three in the morning there was a shirtless man covered with dark tatoos there to greet us and asign us to our room. The mountains were the most beautiful thing i have seen in a long time. Those valleys with the cows and horses felt like a dream.
"Lets Go, come on Lets Go!" zzvrooom. A motorcycle caught all of our eyes when it bolted past us going about 85 through the mountains. The driver had military clothing on and a camo backpack that looked like it was from the coast guard.
